- "You have to be strong. Strength of heart will carry you through the hardest of trials."
- —Terra to Cinderella upon their first meeting
Terra is one of the main protagonists of Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep. Along with his best friends Ventus and Aqua, he is a Keyblade apprentice, and it is his dream to reach the rank of Keyblade Master.
Terra eventually becomes Terra-Xehanort after Master Xehanort forces his heart into Terra's body. He's also the original persona of the Lingering Will, the source of Xemnas' body, and the host of the Dark Figure.
Story[edit]
Before Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep[edit]
Terra trains as an apprentice Keyblade wielder under the Keyblade Master Eraqus at the Land of Departure, along with Aqua.
One day, Xehanort brings Ventus to the Land of Departure, and sees the potential for darkness in Terra. Ventus also becomes an apprentice under Eraqus. Terra, Aqua, and Ventus become close friends, and Terra gifts his old wooden Keyblade to Ventus.
Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep[edit]
Four years after Ventus's arrival, Terra and Aqua are anticipating their Mark of Mastery exam, and Aqua gives Terra and Ventus Wayfinders as a symbol of their connection. The next day, Terra and Aqua take the exam. Due to Xehanort's interference, Terra's darkness flares during the exam, and he fails it, while Aqua passes. While Terra is contemplating his darkness, Xehanort approaches and encourages Terra to channel his darkness rather than suppress it.
Eraqus summons Terra and Aqua and asks them to stop the threat of the Unversed throughout other worlds and find Xehanort, who has gone missing. Eraqus tells Terra he should use this opportunity to prove himself worthy to be a Keyblade Master, but privately asks Aqua to bring Terra back if he is tempted by darkness. As Terra is leaving the Land of Departure, Ventus tries to speak to him, but Terra brushes him off.
Terra encounters Maleficent in Enchanted Dominion, who hints that Xehanort is interested in hearts of pure light, such as the heart of Aurora. Maleficent puts Terra into a trance, and, while he's unconscious, she and Xehanort steal Aurora's heart.[2] After Terra regains consciousness, Maleficent claims the act was instead Terra's doing and bids him to join her, but he refuses.
Terra continues to visit other worlds. In Castle of Dreams, he learns that the Unversed are being commanded by a boy in a mask, and briefly encounters Aqua, who tells him that Ventus ran away from home. Terra visits Yen Sid, who suggests Xehanort's disappearance is linked to the appearance of the Unversed.
Xehanort summons Terra to the Keyblade Graveyard, and explains that the masked boy is Vanitas, the darkness Xehanort pulled from Ventus's heart. Xehanort asks Terra to defeat Vanitas, and suggests Vanitas may be found in the city of light, Radiant Garden.
After arriving in Radiant Garden, Terra sees Xehanort in the city, but loses sight of him. In the Central Square, Terra finds the Trinity Armor Unversed, and is joined by Aqua and Ventus, who aid him in defeating it. Terra tells Ventus to return home, especially when he hears that Ventus has met Vanitas. Terra learns that Aqua has been watching him at Eraqus's behest, and, hurt by this, and takes off on his own.
After leaving his friends, Terra encounters Braig, who claims to be holding Xehanort hostage. Terra follows him as a precaution and finds Xehanort chained up. With Xehanort's encouragement, Terra fights Braig, and ends up channeling his darkness, scarring Braig's face. Terra is dismayed that he failed to keep his darkness in check, but Xehanort tells him it was a step forward and encourages him to seek a balance of light and darkness.
As Terra prepares to leave Radiant Garden, Ventus catches up and asks to come along. Terra declines as he doesn't want to put Ventus in danger, but he tells him that he knows Ventus will be there for him when he needs him.
Terra continues searching other worlds for Vanitas while seeking to control his darkness. He ends up falling into Galactic Federation custody in Deep Space. Terra escapes with Dr. Jumba and helps him free Experiment 626. When 626 temporarily steals Terra's Wayfinder, Terra realizes how important his bond with Aqua and Ventus is to him.
Eventually, Terra is led to the Destiny Islands by a warm light. He sees two young boys, Sora and Riku, and he senses light within Riku. Terra speaks with Riku, who tells him he wants to become strong in order to protect his friends, and he decides to perform a Bequeathing with Riku, allowing him to wield the Keyblade in the future.
Terra sees Ventus in the Lanes Between, but before Terra can catch up to him, Xehanort calls Terra back to the Keyblade Graveyard. Xehanort tells him that Ventus intends to confront Eraqus about his past, and that he is in danger. Terra returns to the Land of Departure in time to defend Ventus from Eraqus's attack. He throws Ventus into a portal and, channeling his darkness, defeats Eraqus in battle. Although they both regret their actions, Eraqus is suddenly struck down by Xehanort. Eraqus fades into light, and his heart enters Terra's heart. Xehanort encourages Terra to give himself over to darkness. He tells Terra to come to the Keyblade Graveyard to witness the ends of Ventus and Aqua, then unleashes a flood of darkness which ravages the world. As Terra is leaving, he picks up a disturbance coming from the ruins. A cloaked figure appears and challenges Terra to battle. Terra defeats the mysterious figure, and it vanishes.
After arriving at the Keyblade Graveyard, Terra reunites with Aqua and Ventus. Ventus asks them to put an end to him, but is interrupted by the arrival of Xehanort and Vanitas. Xehanort declares his intention to create the χ-blade. In the ensuing fight, Terra faces Xehanort alone and draws on his darkness to defeat Xehanort. However, the χ-blade is forged, and Xehanort extracts his own heart and implants it in Terra's body, taking control of it in the form of Terra-Xehanort. Terra's Lingering Will inhabits his discarded Keyblade Armor, challenges Terra-Xehanort, and defeats him. Terra-Xehanort disappears in the light emanating from the χ-blade as it is destroyed, while the Lingering Will remains. Terra vows that he will set things right.
While Aqua fights Terra-Xehanort in Radiant Garden, Terra's heart continues to resist Xehanort. To stop him, Xehanort turns his Keyblade on his body, locking Terra's heart in the Dark Figure and leading to Xehanort's amnesia.[3] Even after this, Terra's and Xehanort's hearts continue their dispute.
Between Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep and Kingdom Hearts[edit]
After becoming an apprentice to Ansem the Wise, the amnesiac Terra-Xehanort descends into darkness and removes his heart, splitting himself into his Heartless, Ansem, Seeker of Darkness and his Nobody, Xemnas.
Spurred on by his meeting with Terra, Riku continually longs to leave the Destiny Islands.[4]
Kingdom Hearts 0.2 Birth by Sleep -A fragmentary passage-[edit]
Naminé is able to speak to Terra in his memories, and warns him that he will soon encounter a familiar light, and he must guide this light to ensure she isn't lost to the darkness. Terra promises to keep fighting, reaffirming his pledge to Aqua and Ventus. Secret Story from Kingdom Hearts Concert -First Breath-
As Aqua wanders the Realm of Darkness, she sees phantom visions of Terra and Ventus. She approaches them in the Forest of Thorns and speaks to Terra. He warns her that Xehanort is looking for Ventus, but Terra-Xehanort takes over as she responds. Terra struggles against Xehanort and informs her of Xehanort's ruse. Xehanort summons dark hands to drag Aqua into darkness, but Terra restrains Xehanort with chains of light. Kingdom Hearts 0.2 Birth by Sleep -A fragmentary passage-
Kingdom Hearts coded[edit]
After Ansem, Seeker of Darkness and Xemnas are destroyed, Terra's body is recompleted separately from Xehanort. However, his heart remains trapped within the Dark Figure, and his empty body is filled with the heart of Terra-Xehanort from the past, which Young Xehanort has collected.[5][6]
When Data-Naminé gives Data-Sora the extra memories that were implanted in Jiminy's Journal, an image of Terra appears, along with images of Aqua and Ventus. Data-Naminé tells Data-Sora that Terra is among those that Sora must save from their hurt.
Later, Mickey Mouse and Yen Sid speak about their search for Terra, Aqua, and Ventus, and how only Terra's location remains unknown. Kingdom Hearts Re:coded
Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance[edit]
- "The main reason I kept dreaming about seeing the outside world... was 'cause of him."
- —Riku remembers Terra.
When Sora arrives at The World That Never Was, he is caught by Organization XIII and placed within a nightmare where he encounters phantoms of Terra and Aqua. Later, when Xigbar and Xemnas taunt Sora, Sora proclaims that he is proud to be there for his friends, and a vision of the people Sora is connected to, including Terra, appears.
During his fight with Ansem, Seeker of Darkness, Riku remembers Terra and his promise to protect the things that matter.
Mickey considers Terra among the seven Guardians of Light that need to be gathered, but Xehanort implies that Terra already belongs to the darkness instead.
Kingdom Hearts III[edit]
- "Yeah. You never stopped lighting my way back. [...] I heard you too, Ven. You found me, just like you promised. Thank you."
- —Terra tearfully thanks Aqua and Ventus.
After Sora, Aqua, and Ventus fight Terra-Xehanort in the Keyblade Graveyard, Terra briefly regains control of his body, but Terra-Xehanort quickly wrestles back control and captures the trio using manifested chains of their bonds. As he prepares to kill Aqua and Ventus, Terra takes control of the Dark Figure and saves them, then breaks the chains. He restrains Terra-Xehanort while Sora hits him with a beam of light, and then Terra's heart leaves the Dark Figure and rejoins with his body, expelling Xehanort.
Now whole again, Terra reunites with Aqua and Ventus, expressing his gratitude for them never giving up on him, and the trio tearfully embraces. After taking time to recuperate, they join Sora and hold back Kingdom Hearts with the other Guardians of Light while Sora faces Xehanort. After Sora defeats Xehanort, they follow their hearts to Sora. Terra greets Xehanort and releases Eraqus's heart from his, who convinces Xehanort to admit defeat. Eraqus reunites with Terra, Aqua, and Ventus and asks Terra to look after the other two before fading into light with Xehanort.
Terra, Aqua, and Ventus make a memorial for Eraqus in the Land of Departure and leave their Wayfinders there. Later, Terra gathers with the other Guardians of Light and their friends on Destiny Islands to play.
Sometime after this, Terra reconnects with Riku before leaving with Aqua and Ventus to search for Sora in the Realm of Darkness.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[edit]
In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Terra appears in the 8 o'clock and alternative 7 o'clock Stations in the Dive to the Heart sections of the Hollow Bastion stage, as an obtainable spirit in Sora's Spirit Board, and is represented by Chrom in Spirit Battle.
Design[edit]
According to Tetsuya Nomura, Terra is approximately 20 years old in Birth By Sleep.[7]
Terra is a tall, muscular young man with brown hair that reaches to the base of his neck in the back and is styled into rather messy, vertical spikes on top, and bangs that frame his face. He has blue eyes and slightly tanned skin. Terra wears a skintight, dark grey, high-collared, short-sleeve shirt. Over his shirt are two red straps which intersect over his chest and back, and tuck into his pants. Terra's pants have a distinct feudal Japanese style; his belt is tied like an obi-sash and he wears hakama. His hakama are mainly tan, with a lighter bottom hem, while the top section is dark grey, with several loops for his belt and two buttons. On the front of his belt, he wears a gold Terra's Mark symbol. He has dark, armored boots with gold trim. This outfit is very similar to the one Eraqus wore as a child, only lacking the outer coat and having different strap colors.
Terra wears a plain black armband at his right wrist, while his left arm is mostly covered in armor. Terra's armor has some similarities to Aqua's and Ven's. Terra's shoulder has a large, ornate crest like Ven's, though Terra's is gold and covered by a gold-circled black button set into slate grey segment. Attached to this is a long, segmented section with alternating colors, similar to Aqua's, though Terra's is muted red-brown and grey, and much longer, reaching all the way to his wrist. He also wears a dark grey fingerless glove similar to Aqua's. He has a black gauntlet on his forearm over the armor, which has a rusty red cuff and crest with another gold-circled button.
Terra can don his Keyblade Armor by touching the black button on his pauldron. The base of his armor is dark brown, with decorative orange lines. He has a metallic red breastplate which extends to his pelvis, with curved gold "wings" attached to the top. On his shoulders and hips are large gold pieces with angular black stones set into them. He has gold fingerless gloves and two thick gold bars on each thigh, and red and gold pieces covering his knees. A curved, jagged red spike protudes from the back of his thick gold anklets. His helmet is mainly gold, with a gold chin guard, and a black front and visor, the top of which is outlined in red. It has two tall, upright red prongs on either side. He has dark gold gauntlets with a red outer piece on each forearm; the left gauntlet has a larger, two-pronged red piece with a black stone set into it, and is reminiscent of his helmet.
In the secret ending Birth by Sleep, the armor appears thicker and less vibrant, and has a cape which is gold on the outside with a navy blue inside. The cape was removed from the final design due to technical limitations, but returns in Kingdom Hearts III Re Mind.
Following his possession by Master Xehanort, Terra's hair turns silvery-white and his eyes turn yellow, with his ears eventually becoming pointed and his skin darkening. Terra's appearance is carried on to both Terra-Xehanort and Xemnas, as they are both Terra's body under Master Xehanort's influence. Though this may be coincidental, his hair shares some similarities with Young Xehanort's, with both having long bangs and a spiky top, and being longer in the back.
Terra's Japanese voice actor, Ryotaro Okiayu, was chosen because his voice bore similar elements to both Chikao Otsuka, the voice actor for Master Xehanort, and Akio Otsuka, the voice actor for Terra-Xehanort.[8]
Like Ventus's and Aqua's names are related to Sora's and Kairi's, respectively, Terra's name is related to Riku's; "terra" means "earth" in Latin, similar to Riku's name meaning "land" in Japanese. The official Japanese website refers to Terra as the "Vast Earth Protecting Bonds" (絆守る大地 Kizuna Mamoru Daichi).
Terra's artwork for Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep Final Mix mimics his pose from the promotional artwork for the original game.
Personality[edit]
Beneath Terra's calm and cool exterior hides his willingness to give his life for his friends, as well as his fear of defeat and desire for strength. This yearning therefore leads him to be constantly tempted by the darkness, similarly to Riku. Terra can also be overly trusting, which is something that villains use to take advantage of him, such as his obliviousness to the fact that Master Xehanort is attempting to seduce him into darkness. Because of this influence, he begins to doubt those most special to him, and only realizes his wrongdoings after they occur.
Despite his ties to darkness, Terra always holds his bonds with Ventus and Aqua in high esteem, wishing to fight for and help them even long after his possession. Terra-Xehanort, Xemnas and the Lingering Will all demonstrate instances of Terra's faded consciousness acting on Ventus and Aqua's behalf. He also holds Master Eraqus in high regard, viewing him as a surrogate father, crying at his apparent demise and later revealing that Eraqus's influence and strength has "set foot into" his heart, allowing him to resist total possession by Xehanort.
Abilities[edit]
Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep[edit]
Terra is the most powerful of the trio in terms of the damage aspect. He uses slow, but very heavy and hard-hitting attacks to decimate his enemies. Terra has a large assortment of attack commands, consisting of heavy attacks, like Ars Solum, Brutal Blast, Windcutter, and Zantetsuken. He can also use some earth based attacks, like Geo Impact and Meteor Crash, as well as dark based attacks, like Dark Haze and Chaos Blade. Two other attacks involve his HP, Limit Storm, which deals more damage with low HP, and Sacrifice, which expends HP for a single, powerful attack. Terra's utilizes his earth element through his exclusive Finish commands, Rising Rock, Dark Star, and his ultimate finisher, Demolition. Another finish command exclusive to him is Random End. Terra's slow attacks can be compensated by using a D-Link with Ventus, which enables him to attack more rapidly.
Although not as skilled in magic as his classmate, Aqua, Terra has access to a broad variety of magic spells as well as four spells exclusive to him in Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep. Terra's affinity for earth lets him use the powerful Quake and Meteor spells. In addition, the power of darkness allows him to use the Dark Firaga spell. He can also use Warp, which allows him to potentially wipe an enemy from existence, but will not leave any experience or prizes.
Beside a variety of these abilities usable by all three or two of the protagonists in Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep, Terra has access to three exclusive Command Styles and three exclusive Shotlocks. His first exclusive command style is Critical Impact, which utilizes slow but heavy hits to their maximum. His second style is Rockbreaker, a second level style which uses his earth element and uses powerful, long-ranged ground attacks. His third style is Dark Impulse, a second level Command Style which uses the power of darkness and hits enemies with slow, heavy attacks, but also exhibits long-range projectile attacks.
Two of his exclusive Shotlocks utilize dark powers, Sonic Shadow and Dark Volley. His most powerful Shotlock, Ultima Cannon, turns his Keyblade into a giant cannon.
Terra has access to Slide, which gives him good distance from his enemy, but does not grant as much invincibility as Ventus's Dodge Roll or Aqua's Cartwheel. His Sonic Impact ability can extend from both Slide and Air Slide, allowing him to perform a charge attack mid-slide.
Terra briefly assists Ventus and Aqua on two occasions.

Weapons[edit]
Terra's exclusive Keyblades are primarily based on the earth element, referencing the Latin meaning of his name, and the darkness element, showing his attraction to darkness. The Earthshaker and the Darkgnaw can be seen as his weaker Keyblades, while the Ends of the Earth and the Chaos Ripper can be seen as an upgraded version of each Keyblade, respectively. His exclusive Keyblades are also focused primarily in strength, prominently shown by how the Chaos Ripper has the greatest attack bonus in the entire game. He also used to train using his Wooden Keyblade, which he passed down to Ventus later. His versions of common Keyblades are longer compared to Ventus's and Aqua's. When Terra summons his Keyblade, blocks and rings designed after his default Keyblade appear, revolving around his wrist.

- ^ In the original Nintendo 3DS release of the game, the journal entry instead states "more than a decade ago."
- ^ Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep Ultimania, Interviewer: "If Terra wasn't the one who stole Aurora's heart in his chapter, who actually did steal it?" / Nomura: "It was Master Xehanort and Maleficent. In "KHI" it was shown that beings of darkness like Maleficent and the Heartless are able to steal people's hearts. The theory is that Terra, who has light residing in his heart, is not a being of darkness and therefore didn't steal Aurora's heart." Translation via krexia
- ^ Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep, Final Episode: "In a desperate move to rid himself of Terra once and for all, Xehanort turned his own Keyblade on himself, and began to sink into the pool of darkness that spilled forth."
- ^ Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance, Riku: "The main reason I kept dreaming about seeing the outside world... was 'cause of him."
- ^ Kingdom Hearts III Ultimania, Nomura: "By all rights, Terra should have been revived as himself at that point in time. However, his heart was still in the clutches of Xehanort, and it was unable to go back, and the shell of his body was the only thing that revived. Then, Xehanort brought the heart of Terranort from the past and put it in that shell of a body he once controlled."
- ^ Kingdom Hearts III Re Mind, Xehanort: "Ansem and Xemnas originated from Terra, or rather his young form—and it too was restored. However, my heart has returned to me, while his is yet lost. I decided to fill this hollow vessel with my heart—indeed, the very same heart that previously resided within young Terra."

- ^ Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep Ultimania, Interviewer: "What was your reasoning for choosing Ryotaro Okiayu as Terra?" / Nomura: "Chikao Otsuka, who plays Master Xehanort, has a dry sort of voice. The actor for Terra-Xehanort, Akio Otsuka, has a deep resonating sort of voice. We wanted something that would have elements of both in it, and ended up choosing him." Translation by Lissar
