A researcher in Radiant Garden who has been delving into the workings of the heart. He and his fellows at the castle have taken Ienzo, an orphan, under their wing.

The human form of Vexen, one of Organization XIII's Nobodies. In his previous life, he was one of Ansem the Wise's apprentices and researched the mysteries of the heart. He has awoken in Radiant Garden, but his condition remains unstable.

Story

Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep

Even is an apprentice to Ansem the Wise, the ruler and leading scientist of Radiant Garden, alongside Braig, Dilan, Aeleus, and Ienzo. Even approaches Dilan and Aeleus as they are about to follow Ventus to fight off the Unversed, and stops them from leaving as protecting the castle should be their priority. Sensing that Ventus's heart has been stripped of darkness, Even tells them that they shouldn't worry about Ventus as he is special.

After Ienzo wanders off, Even goes looking for him, and finds him with Ventus, who has rescued him from Unversed. Even thanks Ventus for his help, and, when asked if he has seen Terra, directs Ventus to the Outer Gardens. Even tells Ventus he believes they are fated to meet again, before leaving with Ienzo.

Between Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep and Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days

Worried that the darkness in people's hearts would eventually consume his world, Ansem and his apprentices begin performing tests on Terra-Xehanort's heart, which Even shows particular interest in. Eventually, Ansem creates a laboratory in his castle's basement for such experimentation. Unbeknownst to Ansem, Even and the other apprentices begin using the laboratory to conduct inhumane experiments on the human heart and the darkness within it. Such experimentation leads to the creation of Heartless. When Ansem discovers their secret experiments, he immediately orders them to stop.

Even and Ienzo are consumed by darkness.

Shortly after Lea and Isa join them as apprentices, Even and the other apprentices oust Ansem and banish him to the Realm of Darkness. Xehanort convinces the other apprentices to cast off their hearts, and uses his newly-regained ability to use a Keyblade to remove their hearts, producing Heartless. Due to their strong wills, they also continue on as Nobodies. The apprentices found Organization XIII, and Even takes on the name Vexen.

Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance

Even revives alongside Dilan, Aeleus, and Ienzo.

Following the destruction of his Heartless and Vexen, Even is restored to human form within the Heartless Manufactory alongside Dilan, Ienzo, Aeleus, and Lea, but remains unconscious when the others wake up.

Between Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance and Kingdom Hearts III

Sometime after Lea leaves, Even wakes up, but has still not fully recovered. While on a walk through the town square, Even encounters Saïx, who offers Even the chance to become a Nobody again to complete his research on the Replica Program and help bring Roxas back. Seeing Saïx's offer as a chance to make amends, Even becomes Vexen again and rejoins the group as a reserve member. Secret Report 7

Kingdom Hearts III

Following Xehanort's defeat, Even is recompleted once again, and returns to his position at the castle. He assists Ansem and Ienzo with restoring Naminé through a Replica.

Some time later, Even, Ienzo, and Ansem study Kairi's memories after she volunteers to be put into a sleep so they can look for clues to Sora's whereabouts.

Kingdom Hearts Melody of Memory

A year later, Even continues to study Kairi's memories alongside Ienzo and Ansem. Eventually, Kairi awakens with a clue from her memories of Terra-Xehanort. After discussion, they surmise that the clue points to Sora being in a world of "unreality, or fiction".

Design

Even's appearance matches his Nobody's appearance exactly, except for the differing outfits and his eyes, which are a brighter shade of light green. He wears a long white lab coat, grey vest, white collared shirt, and a purple ascot. He also seems to wear black pants and silver lined boots identical to those worn by Organization XIII members.

Personality

Even shared his Nobody's scientific curiosity and thirst for knowledge. Unlike his post-counterpart, however, Even displayed a friendlier and gentler disposition, expressing gratitude to Ventus for rescuing Ienzo from a swarm of Unversed. He appeared to have a strong bond with the young Ienzo, apparently acting as the boy's caretaker and personally going out to look for him as Radiant Garden was infested with the Unversed.
