Aladdin & Abu
Aladdin (1992)
A young man from Agrabah, and his best friend.

Abu is Aladdin's pet monkey. Abu can almost always be found with his master, and is willing to do anything Aladdin demands of him. He is often seen getting into trouble because of his bad habit of stealing various belongings. He was first seen in Disney's Aladdin.

Story[edit]

Kingdom Hearts χ[edit]

Prior to Player's arrival in Agrabah, Abu is kidnapped by the Wily Bandit after Aladdin's fight with the Heartless. Aladdin and Player set out to rescue him, but his tracks only lead them to Red Bandits. After Aladdin retrieves the stolen rubies, they start flying away and shinning, making a path through the Starless Sands, marking the way to the Red Bandits' Den. Player defeats the Willy Bandit with help of Aladdin, but he teleports away, leaving a crack on the wall unprotected from where Abu emerges and he reunites with his friend.

Abu also appears has a Normal Medal in the game. He is an upright Speed medal with the Esuna ability.

Kingdom Hearts[edit]

Abu is first seen trapped in a sand pit with Aladdin. Once the duo is free from the sand pit, they help Sora, Donald Duck, and Goofy. Abu only appears on occasion, whenever Sora and Aladdin need him to help solve a puzzle in the Cave of Wonders.

When Sora and Aladdin explore the chambers in the depths of the Cave of Wonders, they are occasionally blocked by a puzzle which involves a statue holding a large, red gem. When the command "Call" is activated from the command menu, Abu leaps from Aladdin's shoulder to the statue and taps the statue's gem a few times with his hands. The gem glows, Abu leaps back to Aladdin and the puzzle should be solved.

Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days[edit]

Abu appears once again to cause mischief in the town of Agrabah. He is confronted by Aladdin in the Marketplace, being yelled at by his friend for committing theft.

Kingdom Hearts II[edit]

Abu is again getting into trouble when he steals a black lamp from The Peddler's shop. Aladdin forces him to give the lamp back, only to discover moments later that it was the lamp Jafar was trapped in. Abu follows Aladdin, Sora, Donald, and Goofy to the Cave of Wonders, so they can obtain some treasure to purchase the lamp back from the Peddler. It is here that Abu activates a trap when he grabs a floating gem, but quickly helps Sora solve the puzzle.

After the group defeats the Blizzard Lord and the Volcanic Lord, Abu tries to get away with a gem he swiped from the Cave of Wonders, but Donald takes it from him and tries to keep it for himself.

Design[edit]

Abu is a small tufted capuchin with orange-brown fur and pale skin. His body structure is typical of most monkeys, including his thumbs and prehensile tail, though he only has four fingers and toes on each limb, like other Agrabah characters. He has large, black eyes and wears a fez that is violet on the bottom and red-violet on the top. The two sections are separated by a yellow pattern. He wears a thin vest not unlike Aladdin's, albeit Abu's is red-violet.

Personality[edit]

Although a little mischievous at times, Abu is loyal and answers to Aladdin whenever he is summoned. He has an interest in jewels, and tried to steal one once. He loves the shining of these gems. He also is very loyal, as he retrieves items Aladdin tells him to, or is very willing to help him.

Abilities[edit]

Abu has the ability to solve puzzles in the Cave of Wonders. Other than that, Abu cannot do much in combat. He helps to solve the puzzles by touching the egg-like structures in the hands of the ape statues.

Origin[edit]

Abu originates from he 1992 film Aladdin. In the film, Abu is Aladdin's pet monkey, partner-in-crime, and best friend who helps his master steal goods from the market as they are "street-rats" living in the slums of Agrabah. When stealing food at the local market, Aladdin meets Princess Jasmine (although he does not know it at the time), and Abu immediately disapproves of his friend's attraction to her, as he thinks it will ruin their friendship. Later, when Aladdin is imprisoned by the guards on the account that he kidnapped Jasmine, Abu, who was not captured, goes to save him by picking the locks on Aladdin's chains. There, they meet Jafar disguised as an old beggar, who persuades the pair to go into the Cave of Wonders to find a magic lamp in exchange of escaping their cell. During their journey, Aladdin and Abu meet the Carpet, and in spite of Abu's protests, Aladdin invites Carpet to join their group. Deeper within the cave, Abu's greed for jewels overwhelmed him and he snatched a large ruby out of a monkey statue's paws (despite of being warned not touch anything in the cave beforehand), causing the cave to collapse.

When Aladdin, Abu, and Carpet try to escape, Jafar reveals himself and tries to stab Aladdin with a knife, but Abu bites his arm to stop him and is then thrown down the cave with his friends. After meeting Genie and breaking out of the cave, Genie transforms Abu into several other "vehicles" (a camel, a horse and a car, among others) before finally transforming the monkey into a royal elephant as part of Aladdin's wish to become a prince. Abu stays in his elephant form throughout most of the film, and Aladdin uses him a mode of transportation at times. At the film's climax, he aids Aladdin in the battle against Jafar, briefly fighting Iago before being transformed into a toy monkey by Jafar in his sorcerer form. Once Jafar is defeated, Abu is reverted to his normal form.
