KINGDOM HEARTS BbS (2010)
The embodiment of the darkness extracted from Ventus's heart.
Kingdom Hearts III
A member of the real Organization XIII.

This is the pure darkness that Master Xehanort extracted from Ventus's heart. He was pitted against Ventus in order to forge the χ-blade, but Ventus prevailed and Vanitas ceased to exist.

Now that he is back, he continues to seek his "brother," Ventus.
"Oh, grow up. Is that what you call friendship? You'll never know the truth unless you go out and look for it yourself. Come on, what could you possibly know when you're stuck here, looking at nothing but what's in your tiny world?"
—Vanitas to Ventus

Vanitas is a Keyblade wielder who acts as the secondary antagonist of Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep and a supporting antagonist in Kingdom Hearts III. He is the second apprentice of Master Xehanort, created when the being Darkness was extracted from Ventus's heart; he is also the source of the Unversed, and later, a member of the real Organization XIII.

Story[edit]

Before Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep[edit]

While living as a Keyblade wielder in Daybreak Town, Ventus becomes possessed by true darkness, which becomes one with Ventus's own darkness. Eventually, Ventus is able to contain the true darkness, and shortly afterward is transported far into the future, where he is found by Xehanort and becomes his apprentice. Kingdom Hearts Union χ

Vanitas is created from the darkness in Ventus's heart.

A year later, Xehanort brings Ventus to the Keyblade Graveyard, and sets him against Neoshadow Heartless in an attempt to forge the χ-blade by awakening Ventus's darkness. After Ventus refuses and is knocked unconscious by the Heartless, Xehanort uses his Keyblade to forcibly extract the darkness in Ventus's heart, which coalesces into the form of a masked boy, whom Xehanort names "Vanitas". Xehanort takes the fading Ventus to Destiny Islands, where his heart connects with the newborn Sora, stabilizing him. Through their connection, Vanitas takes on the physical appearance of Sora. Xehanort probes Vanitas about true darkness.

With Ventus's recovery, Xehanort decides Vanitas and Ventus can still forge the χ-blade if they clash, but as Ventus's current weakness makes Vanitas's presence dangerous to him, Xehanort decides to take Ventus to the Land of Departure to leave in Eraqus's care. Xehanort's Report XI Xehanort tells Vanitas to stay at the Keyblade Graveyard, but Vanitas disobeys him and meets up with Xehanort in the Land of Departure hallway. Xehanort informs Vanitas of the existence of the thirteen true darknesses and their fates. Xehanort questions Vanitas about the locations of the unaccounted-for darknesses, speculating that Vanitas is one of them. Vanitas dodges all of Xehanort's questions about the subject, either answering them with questions of his own or dismissing them entirely. Xehanort suggests that it was destiny that brought him, Vanitas, and Ventus together, which causes Vanitas to become lost in thought. Ultimately, Vanitas denies any connection to true darkness, but Xehanort remains curious of Vanitas's true nature. Kingdom Hearts Dark Road

This information is based on alternate scenes or materials and is not considered canon within the overall plot of the series.

In the Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep light novel,[1] Vanitas is initially born as a faceless being, only gaining a human appearance after Ventus connects with Sora's heart. As Vanitas begins to experience emotions, both his own and those from Ventus's memories, Unversed are created.

When Sora connects with Ventus's heart, Vanitas's vision becomes dark and he collapses. Then a light engulfs him, and he hears Sora's voice. When Vanitas wakes up, he realizes something has happened to Ventus, and Vanitas's own appearance has changed to resemble Sora.

When Xehanort returns with Ventus, Vanitas kicks Ventus, feeling an inexplicable hatred towards him. Xehanort scolds him for hurting Ventus, but praises Vanitas's Unversed. Vanitas expresses a desire to kill Ventus, but Xehanort stops him and explains that he needs both of them for his plan. Xehanort leaves with Ventus once again, while Vanitas stews over the next several days, deciding that he doesn't want to help Xehanort, and feeling anxious over his circumstances and future. Vanitas's feelings create more Unversed, which Vanitas repeatedly destroys, causing himself pain. Eventually, Xehanort returns to Vanitas while he collapses in pain and misery. When Vanitas desperately asks why he has to suffer, Xehanort tells him he can end his suffering by becoming the χ-blade. Seeing it as his only hope, Vanitas accepts this as his goal.

Due to the link between his heart and Ventus's, Vanitas is able to sense the bond between Ventus and Terra. Vanitas reports this to Xehanort, who decides to manipulate Ventus and Terra's bond as part of his plan. Xehanort's Report XII

Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep[edit]

Vanitas threatens Ventus with the loss of Terra.

Four years after Vanitas's creation, Xehanort goes to the Land of Departure to observe Terra and Aqua's Mark of Mastery exam, secretly accompanied by Vanitas. After the exam, Xehanort and Vanitas discuss Ventus's performance, and determine that Ventus is currently too weak and must be strengthened. Vanitas later appears to Ventus in his room, taunting him into leaving the Land of Departure by claiming that Terra will leave Ventus behind and become a different person. Vanitas then leaves through a Corridor of Darkness.

On Xehanort's instruction, Vanitas travels to different worlds spreading his Unversed, so that Terra will be lured away from the Land of Departure, and Ventus, following him, can become strong enough to forge the χ-blade.

Vanitas fights Ventus and Mickey.

After his first few visits to other worlds, Ventus sees Vanitas in the Lanes Between and pursues him to the Keyblade Graveyard. Ventus attempts to interrogate Vanitas about Terra, but Vanitas summons his Keyblade and challenges Ventus to a duel. After soundly defeating Ventus, Vanitas decides to ignore Xehanort's orders and kill Ventus, but as he fires a blast at Ventus, Mickey Mouse intervenes and rescues Ventus. Mickey reprimands Vanitas for misusing the Keyblade, and he and Ventus fight Vanitas together. After they defeat Vanitas, he admits their victory and once again leaves through a dark corridor.

Later, Aqua finds Vanitas in Radiant Garden's Central Square. When Aqua attempts to question Vanitas, Vanitas starts a fight. Aqua seemingly wins, but as she approaches the downed Vanitas to remove his mask, he begins laughing. Vanitas suggests Aqua can be used as a backup plan before leaving through a dark corridor.

In Neverland, Vanitas appears behind Mickey and kidnaps him, delivering him to Xehanort. Afterwards, Vanitas returns to Neverland, and finds and takes Ventus's cherished Wooden Keyblade that had been left with the Lost Boys. Vanitas carries the Wooden Keyblade while he confronts Aqua and snaps it in half in front of her, claiming that Ventus has outgrown the toy like Vanitas has outgrown his need for Aqua as his backup plan. The two fight once again, and Vanitas appears to end up unconscious. Believing she has vanquished him, Aqua passes out, but Vanitas escapes once again while she is unconscious.

When Ventus is sent to Destiny Islands, Vanitas appears to him once again. As Ventus walks away, Vanitas tells him he is now strong and should join with Vanitas to forge the χ-blade, but Ventus refuses. Vanitas notes that Ventus was once "too broken to talk back", triggering Ventus to remember his past and Vanitas's creation. Vanitas decides to force the matter, and tells Ventus to meet him at the Keyblade Graveyard, the one and only place where the χ-blade can be forged, threatening to kill Terra and Aqua. He then disappears into a Corridor of Darkness.

Vanitas and Master Xehanort meet Terra, Ventus and Aqua for a final showdown.

Vanitas reunites with Xehanort at the Keyblade Graveyard, where they meet with Terra, Ventus, and Aqua. An intense battle ensues, and Vanitas rides on a wave of lifeless Keyblades as he fights. Eventually, Terra confronts Vanitas and Xehanort alone. At Xehanort's command, Vanitas leaves to merge with Ventus and kill Aqua. Vanitas jumps down and attacks Aqua from above, knocking her unconscious, and prepares to finish her off while Ventus lies frozen, but Ventus manages to break through and fights Vanitas.

After their fight, Vanitas unmasks, revealing his face, and declares that, as his body is about to perish, the χ-blade will be forged. He restrains Ventus with Floods and explains that he is the source and controller of all Unversed. Vanitas then forcibly merges with Ventus into Ventus-Vanitas, emitting a pillar of light and forging the χ-blade in the process, although, due to Ventus's resistance, it is incomplete.

Ventus-Vanitas fights Aqua and Mickey.

Within Ventus's heart, Vanitas and Ventus face each other, with Vanitas wielding the incomplete χ-blade. Vanitas urges Ventus to join him and complete their union, but Ventus refuses, vowing to defeat Vanitas and destroy the χ-blade. Vanitas points out that destroying the χ-blade will destroy Ventus as well as Vanitas, but Ventus is undeterred. The two then fight.

While Ventus battles Vanitas in their shared heart, in the real world Ventus-Vanitas attacks Aqua and Mickey. Ventus-Vanitas asserts his goal to unlock Kingdom Hearts and begin the Keyblade War again. Aqua attacks him, and they fight. Internally, Ventus manages to defeat Vanitas, causing him to disperse into light as Ventus reclaims the missing piece of his heart, though Ventus's heart also disperses into light as he does. In the real world, the χ-blade becomes unstable, and when Aqua strikes it with her Keyblade, it begins bursting with light. Ventus-Vanitas reverts to Ventus, but the light grows, consuming everyone in the Keyblade Graveyard.

Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance[edit]

Sora sees a vision of Vanitas alongside Young Xehanort.

Vanitas's fractured heart is collected by Young Xehanort so he can be made a member of the real Organization XIII. When Young Xehanort appears before Sora within the cathedral at La Cité des Cloches, Ventus's heart reacts within Sora and allows him to see a vision of Vanitas. In unison, Young Xehanort and Vanitas claim that Sora has made his heart into a prison, then vanish.

Later, Vanitas, now in a replica body and wearing a black coat, appears alongside his fellow members of the real Organization XIII at Where Nothing Gathers. As the heroes advance, the Organization's allotted time expires and its members, including Vanitas, retreat to their rightful points in time.

Kingdom Hearts III[edit]

Vanitas begins to once more seek out Ventus's heart to merge back into one being, but with him in control. He learns that Monstropolis has been powered by negative energy in the form of the collected screams and sadness of human children, and uses the Unversed to harvest this energy in order to reconstruct his heart. To this end, Vanitas manipulates Randall's desire for revenge, aiding Randall in returning to Monstropolis by repairing the doorway he had been banished through so that he can harness the technology of Monsters, Inc.

Vanitas confronts Sora in Monstropolis
Vanitas reveals himself and confronts Sora in Monstropolis.

After Sora, Donald Duck, Goofy, Mike Wazowski, and Sulley confront Randall, Vanitas helps him create an Unversed made of scream energy called the Lump of Horror, which Randall sends after the group. After they defeat the Lump of Horror, Vanitas confronts them, having detected Ventus's heart sleeping within Sora. When Vanitas faces Sora, Ventus's heart reacts within Sora, and Sora remembers Vanitas's name. Vanitas fends off Donald and Goofy and attempts to forcibly extract Ventus's heart from Sora, but he is restrained by Sulley, who throws him through a series of doorways, which Sora then seals with his Keyblade.

This information is based on alternate scenes or materials and is not considered canon within the overall plot of the series.

In Kingdom Hearts III, Vol. 2 New Seven Hearts, Vanitas discovers he is now able to bring forth Unversed from the negative emotions of others and not just his own. Vanitas recalls that he has ancient memories of the Keyblade Graveyard, and ponders whether they belong to him, Ventus, or someone else, and questions who he really is.[2]

When Aqua, Sora, Donald, and Goofy return to the Land of Departure to awaken Ventus, Vanitas follows them and confronts them in the throne room, where Ventus's body has been hidden. Aqua attempts to face Vanitas alone, isolating herself and Vanitas within a barrier, but Vanitas baits Aqua while he attacks the barrier, seriously injuring her. Before he can finish her off, Sora uses the power of waking to awaken Ventus, who intervenes to protect Aqua. Seeing himself heavily outnumbered, Vanitas withdraws.

Vanitas' death in Kingdom Hearts III
Vanitas fades away for the second time after being defeated by Sora, Aqua, and Ventus.

Vanitas later reappears at the Keyblade Graveyard with Master Xehanort, Young Xehanort, Xemnas and Ansem; together, they summon a swarm of Heartless, Nobodies and Unversed to wear down the Guardians of Light.

When the seven guardians face off with the Organization, Vanitas fights alongside Terra-Xehanort against Aqua and Ventus. Ventus expresses a desire to return Vanitas to him as they are the same, but Vanitas rejects this and claims that he is not Ventus's dark half, but rather another being stuck inside him that Xehanort pulled out. Re Mind After Sora joins the fight, Vanitas is defeated. The right half of Vanitas's mask breaks off, revealing his face to Sora, shocking him. Vanitas explains to Sora that they look alike because Sora's heart replaced him as the missing piece of Ventus's heart, thus making the three of them "brothers". Sora and Ventus implore Vanitas to join their side and choose the light; however, Vanitas insists that he is and chooses to be darkness. He then fades away, content with the role he has chosen for himself.

Other appearances[edit]

Birth by Sleep[edit]

Vanitas appears alongside Xehanort at the Keyblade Graveyard, and takes part in the battle with Terra, Ventus, and Aqua. At the end, he stands with Xehanort while Xehanort reveals Kingdom Hearts.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[edit]

In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Vanitas appears in the 8 o'clock Station in the Dive to the Heart section of the Hollow Bastion stage. He is also indirectly referenced in Ventus's Spirit Battle, being represented by Dark Samus.

Design[edit]

Official Render of Vanitas (KHIII) wearing his iconic outfit from Birth By Sleep
Vanitas in his suit.
"I'm the piece of Ventus that was taken away. And you're the piece that Ventus needed to be whole again. So...why shouldn't you and I look exactly the same?"
—Vanitas to Sora.

Vanitas wears a black sinewy-looking bodysuit which fades to red at his hands, with red lines across his chest. He has a red belt around his waist, with two intersecting belts forming an "X" beneath it and attached to the tattered blue cloth forming a half-skirt around his waist. He has dark red platform boots and black gloves. Vanitas's outfit is almost identical in design to Riku's Dark Mode suit, albeit in different colors. Vanitas also wears a full-face helmet with a glossy black visor that covers his face and the top of his head, with silver plating covering the back of the helmet, as well as a jagged silver chin guard.

Beneath his helmet, Vanitas is identical to Sora's appearance in Kingdom Hearts II, albeit with gold eyes and blue-black hair. This similarity is due to Sora's heart connecting with Ventus after his heart was fractured, and had anyone else connected with Ventus's heart, Vanitas would have looked like that person.[3] When Vanitas removes his visor, the silver chin guard remains.

In the Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep light novel, Vanitas initially has a doll-like appearance under his mask and appears similar to the Unversed, with jet-black skin and red eyes.[4]

During his time as a member of the real Organization XIII, Vanitas wears the standard black coat, as well as black gloves and boots, though he returns to his normal attire when he enters battle.

Vanitas's name is derived from the Latin word for "vanity" or "emptiness", and was chosen for its meaning, that it sounded similar to "Ventus", and that it was a written pun on "Sora" (?, lit. "emptiness") in Japanese.[5]

The songs associated with Vanitas—"Enter the Darkness", "Enter the Void" and "Unbreakable Chains"—were all composed by Takeharu Ishimoto.[6]

Personality[edit]

As the manifestation of the darkness inside Ventus's heart, created and extracted by Master Xehanort, Vanitas is proud, cunning, and cruel in order to achieve enough strength to forge the χ-blade with Ventus, believing that to be the salvation he desires. As such, the lives of others, including that of his creator, hold absolutely no value to him, and he shows zero remorse for his actions. As a pragmatist, he will strike without hesitation, as seen when he ambushes Aqua in the Keyblade Graveyard and attempts to eliminate her, but will also withdraw when the situation is clearly hopeless.

Despite his loyalty to Master Xehanort, he has no qualms with disregarding his orders if he feels the need arises; for example, he attempts to eliminate Ventus after defeating him in their first battle despite full knowledge that Master Xehanort needed Ventus alive for his plans, even openly stating that he is well aware he is going against Xehanort's orders but does not care. Later, during the Keyblade War, he is willing to interfere with the Organization's plan to use the Seven Guardians of Light in order to retrieve Ventus's heart and restore himself, even though this will force the Organization to rely on the New Seven Hearts.

Vanitas breaks Ventus's Wooden Keyblade in an act of cruelty against Aqua.

He is also shown to be an uncaring, cold, and ruthless individual, having not the slightest sympathy for anyone but himself. Vanitas holds everything and everyone in contempt and holds a great resentment against Ventus and the friends he has. The envy he feels against them is seen in his frequent criticizing of Ventus's friendships with Terra and Aqua, when he callously breaks Ventus's wooden Keyblade while cruelly antagonizing Aqua for playing with the Lost Boys, his constantly calling Ventus "idiot", and forcing Ventus to fight him by threatening to eliminate Terra and Aqua after Ventus refused to.

He possesses a high degree of arrogance, believing his skills surpass all others. In his first fight with Aqua, he claims that he will be the only one that will walk away alive, even bursting into a fit of laughter upon defeat. When fighting her for the final time, Vanitas taunts her by sarcastically asking if she has given up, and boasts that Aqua was just "wasting her energy" trying to stop him. Right before possessing Ventus, he remarks that Ventus never stood a chance against him and Master Xehanort. When fighting Ventus for the final time, he laughs when Ventus declared he would defeat him and destroy the χ-blade. During this same battle, Vanitas directly states his belief that he is the superior half of Ventus's heart. This extreme overconfidence in his abilities usually leads to his downfall as he underestimates his opponents when fighting.

Vanitas is also extremely calm and collected, rarely letting anything affect him. The only time in the entire game when Vanitas expresses genuine concern and fear is when he has been defeated by Ventus for the final time. He begins to panic and makes a desperate attempt to grab the floating χ-blade in a hopeless flurry to hold onto his only way of salvation before dying. By the time of second Keyblade War, Vanitas is even calmer, with him outright mocking Aqua for her outburst of emotion directly before their fight. He is also less attached to life, as upon being defeated, he accepts his demise, smiling contently as he fades away.

Abilities[edit]

Main article: Game:Vanitas
Main article: Ventus-Vanitas
Vanitas engaging a battle.

Vanitas is a skilled and extremely aggressive opponent, showing mastery in both dark magic and wielding the Keyblade. He is swift and agile, able to perform complicated and nearly impossible acrobatic feats such as jumping off of a high cliff while landing squarely on his feet and even riding a tornado of flying Keyblades. He can teleport behind opponents at high speeds to launch attacks while leaving after-images of himself to confuse them. Vanitas is an extremely powerful and ruthlessly pragmatic fighter, easily punishing an opponent's opening or dodging out of the way at the last second. When the tide of battle turns against him, Vanitas will not hesitate to resort to underhanded tactics to defeat his opponent.

He is able to combine physical combos with magic such as attacking from above and causing a large pillar of ice to erupt out of the ground, or attacking opponents from below while bombarding them with fireballs. He can also leap into the air and fire dark lightning bolts from his Keyblade, as well as energize the Keyblade with darkness. Vanitas can also fire dark energy blasts from his Keyblade, and even has his own personal Shotlock, Dark Cannon, wherein he creates three large crystals which focus together and fire a large beam of dark energy.

Vanitas appears to have superhuman endurance, surviving most of his battles while taking little to no bodily damage, able to instantly get back up as if nothing happened. Vanitas also seems to possess superhuman strength; while possessing Ventus, he is able to shatter Ventus's metaphysical Dive to the Heart pillar with a single strike and create a gust of wind powerful enough to send Aqua and Mickey flying with a single swing of his arm. It is most likely that these actions were made possible only through the χ-blade, which Vanitas wielded on both occasions.

Vanitas is a difficult opponent to fight in close combat, as he can quickly counterattack if struck multiple times, making him very dangerous. He also demonstrates the ability to levitate. Though he typically uses the Corridors of Darkness to travel, it is shown that Vanitas is freely capable of surviving in and navigating the Lanes Between unaided by surrounding himself in an aura of dark energy.

While Vanitas acts based on his own desires, it appears that Master Xehanort can summon him at will. Vanitas's arguably most dangerous and destructive ability, however, is the power to create and control the Unversed. As he was born from the purest form of darkness, Vanitas can manipulate his own negative emotions and spawn them as Unversed. Vanitas can also absorb the negativity of any defeated Unversed to increase his power and is able to summon them if needed.

Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep[edit]

D-Link[edit]

Vanitas becomes a temporary D-Link for Ventus during their final battle at the Dive to the Heart. Ventus automatically links with Vanitas during the final phase of the battle, and needs to hit Vanitas with the Finish command to end the battle.

Unlike regular D-Links, Vanitas's D-Link does not drain the Link Gauge, all of its commands but Last Word deal no damage, the Shotlock is replaced with one exclusive to this D-Link, and its Command Gauge only fills by winning clashes with Vanitas.

Weapon[edit]

Vanitas wields a Keyblade known as the Void Gear and has a battle pose that is very similar to Riku's stance. The Keyblade can be summoned at will, appearing in Vanitas's hand in a flash of purple flame. Vanitas can energize the weapon with dark energy, increasing his attack strength. The Vanitas Remnant also wields a monochrome version of this Keyblade. Vanitas is also capable of manipulating the degraded Keyblades that litter the Keyblade Graveyard for a variety of different attacks.

When fused with Ventus, Vanitas gains the ability to wield the most powerful Keyblade of all, the χ-blade. This weapon multiplies his initial strength and attack range a great deal. Vanitas shows great skill in wielding both the incomplete and finalized versions of the χ-blade, able to perform strong combos and powerful desperation moves.

Trivia[edit]

  • After the character's first spoken line, Nomura made a joke saying that he was to voice Vanitas.[7] It was later revealed that Vanitas was voiced by Miyu Irino, the Japanese voice actor for Sora. According to Tetsuya Nomura, Irino had said for a while that he wanted to play an evil character, and Nomura jokingly stated he sort of got carried away with it.[8]
