The Sky Scraper Reaction Command as it appears in the Xemnas (Dragon) boss battle.

Reaction Commands are a feature introduced in Kingdom Hearts II, intended to extend the level of combat. By pressing Triangle at certain moments in battle (or occasionally outside of battle), Sora will perform a specific action, which is indicated by the title of the command. These reactions are mostly combat maneuvers that are used to gain the upper hand against enemies, though they are also used to talk to people and open chests. Occasionally, some Reaction Commands must be completed in order to end a battle. Only a select few Reaction Commands require the player to press Triangle the moment it appears; in Kingdom Hearts II, one can press Triangle until the command is initiated, suffering no penalty if Triangle is not pressed at the right moment. Only three Reaction Commands in the entirety of Kingdom Hearts II penalize such an action. In Kingdom Hearts Re:Chain of Memories, pressing Triangle too early during the execution of a Sleight prevents the attack from being completed.

Non-battle Reaction Commands

Talk

Used to talk to NPCs. Sora can talk to his party members at certain points in the game, such as at the Altar of Naught in The World That Never Was and when on the Interceptor or the Black Pearl in Port Royal.

Open

Used to open chests. Sora/Roxas uses the Keyblade/the Struggle weapon to open a nearby treasure chest. Unlike in Kingdom Hearts, this can also be done during battle.

Skateboard

Used to mount skateboards. Sora/Roxas mounts a skateboard. He then gains access to the following commands:

On the ground
  • Circle: Jump (X in Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix)
  • X: Heelflip
  • Square: Get off
Grinding
  • Circle: Pop-Jump
  • Triangle (near an edge): Grind
  • Square (while grinding): Handstand
In midair
  • Circle: Air Walk
  • X: 360° spin
  • Square: Method Grab

These commands are essential at the beginning of Kingdom Hearts II when Roxas does odd jobs to save money to go the beach, such as Mail Delivery.

Note: The commands for 360° Spin and Air Walk are switched in Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix.

Save

Used to access a Save Point. The player can save his or her progress.

In-battle Reaction Commands

Nobodies/Organization XIII

General Nobodies

Certain reaction commands are available between certain bosses and their respective Nobodies; as such, they have been placed in the same categories as the Boss itself.

  • Reversal
Sora/Roxas does a quick 180° slide, confusing the Dusk. If used when a Creeper is nearby, it will be confused as well.
Used Against: Dusk
Note: In Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix, Sora can use this Reaction Command in his battle against Roxas in The World That Never Was.
  • Fail-Safe
Sora grabs an Assassin that is about to self-destruct and throws it towards the ground. This destroys the Assassin while dealing damage to nearby enemies and forcing other Assassins to emerge from the ground.
Used Against: Assassin
  • Duel Stance
Sora must select "The End" in the command list before time is up to slash through the Samurai, but if too much time passes, Sora will lose the duel and be slashed instead. In Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix, the player has to hit the "O" in the menu bar to slash through the Samurai; selecting any one of the three "X" commands or not selecting anything at all will result in a loss of the duel.
Used against: Samurai
Note: In Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix, Sora may be forced to select "The End" in the command list before time runs out during his battle with Roxas. Successfully doing this will allow Sora to steal Roxas's Keyblades and use them against him; failure allows Roxas to slice through Sora and deal a large amount of damage to him.
  • Stop Dice
Begins a game where player has to hit X at the right time. If the player fails, Sora is turned into a die by the Gambler.
Used against: Gambler.
  • Berserk
Sora grabs a Berserker's weapon (or Saïx's Claymore) and floats above the ground as he holds it; his head shines with a red and black aura, indicating a berserk state. Nearby enemies are pulled in towards the weapon.
Used against: Berserker and Saïx
  • Magna Storm
Follows the Berserk Reaction Command. Sora executes a combo that starts on the ground and concludes in the air, hitting all enemies in range. This command is also used to neutralize Saïx's berserk state.
Used against: Berserker and Saïx

Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep Reaction Commands

In Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep, Reaction Commands only appear during special event battles, usually when the protagonist is fighting alongside another character. Instead of using a separate, dedicated button, Reaction Commands simply replace the attack button (X) when they become available. Reaction Commands are also used in Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep to open treasure chests and examine nearby objects.

  • Use Transporter: Transports the player to and from the Mirage Arena.
  • Goal: When escorting a character, such as Jaq or Snow White, Goal ends the task.
  • Avenger: When party members are hurt, various Avenger commands can be used to attack or defend against nearby enemies with Square. Avenger commands include Avenger Rush, Avenger Save, and others.
  • White Calm: When Ventus escorts Snow White, trees will attempt to scare her by blowing on her. If she yells, "Help me!", then pressing Square activates White Calm, which is a command that releases a tornado of light that picks up enemies and stuns them if they survive. It also stops the trees from attacking Snow White. White Calm is identical to Sign of Faith.
  • Last Dance: While Terra escorts Cinderella to the ballroom, an enemy may attack her. To defend her, the player must press Square, then X to activate Last Dance, during which Terra slams his Keyblade into the ground, creating a shockwave that takes out nearby Unversed.
  • Joint Force: During Ventus's battle with Maleficent, she will attempt to put Ventus to sleep. To avoid this, the player can press Square after Ventus reaches a circle of light created by Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather. Joint Force requires the player to press the buttons that appear onscreen in either a clockwise or counterclockwise fashion. If this is done successfully, Joint Force can be used. It causes Ventus to launch a ball of light towards Maleficent that puts her asleep and deals damage.
  • Selfless Prince: When Prince Phillip is a party member, he will signal Aqua to come towards him, waving his shield and saying, "Here." After the player presses Square, Aqua and Prince Phillip join hands; Phillip tosses Aqua into the air, allowing her to strike either a high platform or Maleficent herself.
  • Astro Shot/Strike: When Experiment 626 is a party member, he will occasionally hop up and down with a white halo around him. Pressing Square while standing next to him causes the player character to grab him as he curls into a ball; the player character then throws him his or her enemy. In the Gantu and Metamorphosis boss battles, this command is called "Astro Strike," but in the Turo Prison Block, it is called "Astro Shot."
Swing Slash
Ventus using Swing Slash alongside Hercules in Olympus Coliseum.
  • Swing Slash: In the Jellyshade battle in Olympus Coliseum, Hercules will occasionally activate this move. If the player hits Square, Hercules will pick Ventus up and swing him, but the player must also spin the analog stick clockwise to charge the attack. After it is charged up, the player can use Swing Slash, which makes Ventus rocket into the Jellyshade crowd, defeating anything in his path. Failure to spin the analog stick quick enough ends the move and makes Hercules flinch.
  • Bronco Strike: During the Lucifer boss battle, Lucifer may jump up onto a high piece of furniture and pounce. If Ventus dodges it, he can strike Lucifer and activate the command with the Square. If the player presses the shown buttons at the right time while riding Lucifer, he or she can activate this Reaction Command which, causes Ventus to unleash multiple strikes upon Lucifer and stun him.
  • Turnover: In the battle against the Cursed Coach, Turnover can be used when an attack is blocked. This Reaction Command causes Aqua to strike the Unversed multiple times, causing it to turn over and become stunned for a short time.
  • Burst of Faith: When Mickey is a party member, he may yell, "Let's team up!" This signals the player to get close to Mickey and press the Square. Ventus or Aqua then starts spinning with Mickey after activating the command; they attack nearby enemies with rays of light. Burst of Faith grants invincibility, which is useful in the Ventus-Vanitas battle, during which the boss uses a powerful charged attack.
  • Dual Limit: In the final battle against Terra-Xehanort, the Guardian may grab Aqua. If so, the player must press X repeatedly to break free. When Aqua breaks free, she enters a bright area where Terra is; the Guardian attempts to keep her from reaching him. If Aqua reaches Terra without getting hit, and the player presses Square, Dual Limit will be activated. The player must press X at the right time in order to deal heavy damage to the Guardian. This Reaction Command is almost identical to Trinity Limit.
