The world contains two areas that can be freely explored: the High Seas and Port Royal. Underwater exploration is made fully available to Sora, Donald and Goofy by diving in any of the ocean segments within the world. Unlike in Port Royal in Kingdom Hearts II, the world is set during the daytime.

There are a couple of areas unexplorable outside of the main story such as , where souls of the dead are sentenced to eternal damnation, and {{nihongo|Over the Edge|世界の果て|Sekai no Hate|lit. The island that must be explored during the story is the . The island's entry point features a small resting area which leads to a maze-like undersea cavern called the . This area consists of housing structures, with the on the south end. Continuing west of this area is the town bridge and waterfall, which leads to the . Within this area are the prison cells where various pirates are contained, as well as featuring members of Cutler Beckett's navy. At the outside-center of the fort is where the Watermelon Flan is located. Directly north of this area is where the fort's cannons are located in addition to the Port's symbolic bell.

Between Kingdom Hearts II and Kingdom Hearts III
Kingdom Hearts III
Since the events that took place in Port Royal, Jack Sparrow along with his beloved ship the Black Pearl was taken to Davy Jones' Locker; he was to give his soul to Davy Jones as payment for bringing his Pearl back from the watery depths and make him captain for thirteen years. However, because it was in Barbossa's control for the following decade, Jack attempted to weasel his way out of the deal by finding the "Dead Man's Chest", which contained Davy Jones' heart. The heart ultimately ended up in the possession of Cutler Beckett, governor of the East India Trading Company; with Jones, and therefore his ship the Flying Dutchman under his control, he began wiping out pirates to dominate the ocean. Jack ended up being taken to Davy Jones' Locker by the Kraken as punishment for not paying his debt, along with angering Jones with the attempt. In response, Will Turner, Elizabeth Swann and Jack's loyal first mate Joshamee Gibbs teamed up with the remaining crew of the Pearl to see the aid of the witch doctor Tia Dalma to find a way to bring back Jack to unite the nine pirate lords. To assist them, Tia Dalma brought back Barbossa, one of the nine pirate lords for an counterattack against Beckett. Acquiring special charts from fellow pirate lord Sou Fang, the crew headed off to find a way into the Locker.
Sora, Donald, and Goofy sail a raft for fun, but fall off a waterfall into an abyss below. To their surprise, their fall dropped them into a vast desert. Trudging on, they see the Pearl in the distance and are soon joined by Jack Sparrow, who asks for help in catching his beloved ship, which is being carried off by magic crabs.

Riding the Pearl to the shore, they meet Will, Elizabeth, Gibbs, Tia Dalma and a revived Barbossa;  Cutler Beckett is taking over the sea, blackmailing Davy Jones to kill pirates for him. Sailing to escape the Locker, Tia Dalma reveals Jack is after a box that can protect him from Jones for not honoring their deal; it contains Jones' heart, which gives whoever has the chest leverage over him.

Kingdom Hearts III
Vexen and Luxord are there as well. Vexen is puzzled by how Davy Jones can live without a heart, believing it holds the secret to perfecting his replicas. Luxord tells him to reign in his curiosity, and allow him to collect the chest as per their orders.
Having arrived in the Caribbean, Sora got to enjoy being a pirate captain, albeit of a raft and a two man crew consisting of Donald and Goofy. Goofy informed him that they were "running out of sea", which turned out to be a waterfall. They awoke in a desert, and began looking around for anything that could help them leave. To their surprise, they found a ship moving on dry land and began chasing after it. Jack Sparrow ran past them, briefly saying "hi" until Sora addressed him without the title "captain". When Sora asked where they were, Jack told him to belay the question and help him catch the Pearl, which was being carried away by crabs. Fighting off the Heartless that had hitched a ride onboard, the quartet boarded the Pearl and rode the mighty vessel out to a body of water. Using a rowboat, they returned to shore, where Will, Elizabeth, Gibbs, Barbossa and Tia Dalma were waiting for them. While Jack talked with Barbossa, Will and Elizabeth told Sora that they were in Davy Jones' Locker, an afterlife for those who crossed Davy Jones. After initially mistaking everyone for mirages, Jack accepted Sora, Donald, Goofy, Gibbs and Tia Dalma on his ship, as he did not like Will, Elizabeth or Barbossa. However, he was forced to take them on as they had Sou Fang's special charts, which would lead them back to the real world. At sea, Tia Dalma told Sora, Donald and Goofy about Jack's debt to Davy Jones and was surprised that "men of the sea" had not heard of him. Once Sora told her that they were from a 'different sea", Tia Dalma appeared surprised, but told them that the Kraken would once again come after Jack, along with his friends. However, Sora boldly stated that he would fight the Kraken if it tried. Tia Dalma was surprised to hear such bravery, stating it was rare, since most people ran for dry land upon hearing it was coming for them.

Elsewhere in ship in the sea, Luxord and Vexen discuss Davy Jones and his ability to continue existing without a heart. Vexen is fascinated by the idea as even his finest replica isn't capable of such a feat. Luxord tells him to reign in his curiosity as their orders are to simply acquire and black box they find. Vexen then explains that the entire reason he was brought back into the Organization was so they could make use of his research on the replicas. Any stride he makes in that research is a stride for all of them. Luxord relents, but tells Vexen to leave the search to him as he knows this world better than him. Vexen agrees, telling Luxord that he will be waiting in the shadows.
After a green flash at sunrise, the Pearl returns to the living world. Suddenly, the ship is attacked by the Raging Vulture. Once Sora takes out the Heartless, he falls into the sea. Donald and Goofy wake him later, revealing their friends left them and Jack on an island. Finding a new ship, the Leviathan, hidden in the island, they set sail and are surprised by a ship sailed by Luxord. Luxord asks for a race, to win information about the chest. Despite losing, Luxord manages to trick Jack into revealing the chest is on the Flying Dutchman and disappears.

Using one of Jack's mad ideas, everyone manages to get back to world of the living. However, their victory is short lived as soon, they are attacked by Heartless sent by Luxord to impede them. With the Raging Vulture too far above them, Sora commandeers a Vaporfly to attack it. Once the Raging Vulture is defeated, the Vaporflies vanish along with it, dunking Sora into the sea. He awakes on an island later with Donald, Goofy and Jack, who explain that the others went on without them as they have important business to take care of. Sora briefly thinks of something Tia Dalma whispered to him before the fight; she promised all the power of the sea under his command if he used the Keyblade to "free" her. Exploring the island, they find a ship called the Leviathan, which Jack claims captaincy of. They are met by Luxord, who offers a race to Port Royal in exchange for information about the "black box" in that world; if they win, he will give Jack any prize he desires. They win the race, but Jack is tricked into asking for the Dead Man's chest, telling Luxord its on the Dutchman, but not which one. Due to their ship sustaining damage from the Heartless in the race, Jack takes the ship to Port Royal for repairs. He tells Sora, Donald and Goofy to find white crabs for the repairs. Once they do, Jack repairs the ship and asks Sora why he wanted the ship. Sora tells him its so he can sail free as the wind; Jack commends him on the answer, saying he is a true pirate. Jack then explains that he is a copy of the real one, sent by the goddess of the sea Calypso to help them; the real Jack and their friends are about to engage in a fight at Shipwreck Cove. With those words, the copy dissolves into crabs. Sora decides that a fight for pirates is a fight for them as well.
The Leviathan docks at Port Royal for repairs; oddly, white crabs are needed for it. Once the ship is fixed, Jack reveals he's a copy sent by the sea goddess to help; the real him and their friends are facing Beckett's armada at Shipwreck Cove.

They sail to Shipwreck Cove, finding the Black Pearl acting as the flagship for all the pirates assembled. When asked about Jack and Tia Dalma's whereabouts, Sora learns Jack was taken prisoner by Jones and Tia Dalma was the goddess Calypso in human form. They freed her in the hopes she would turn the tide of battle in their favor; Barbossa claims that their last hope has left them. However, Sora is confidant that Calypso will help them again, since she's helped before. Inspired by Sora's hope, Elizabeth gives a rousing speech to the crew of the Pearl, yelling for all ships to hoist the colors. With that, both the Pearl and Leviathan charge forward into battle with the Dutchman; Calypso creates a maelstrom that negates any advantages either ship has. As the Pearl and Dutchman pelt each other with cannon fire, Luxord appears on the Leviathan; Sora tells him to give up on the chest on the Dutchman, as its just Davy Jones heart in it. However, Luxord is following his orders to take any black box he finds, using the Kraken to trap the Pearl so he can search the Dutchman. As Sora fights the Kraken to save the Pearl, Luxord finds Jack on the Dutchman with the chest. Jack cuts him off before he can call parley and uses his bad breath to knock him overboard. Davy Jones finds Jack and scares him into running; however, Sora, Donald and Goofy arrive to help Jack fight off the the aquatic nightmare. Jones uses the Kraken to keep Jack isolated, so he can fight him alone. Will and Elizabeth arrive next to help. When Jones threatens Will's life, Jack holds the open chest, threatening to stab Jone's heart. Hiding on the mast above, Vexen is annoyed by the contents of the box, vanishing after deeming the search a waste of time. Jones stabs Will in the heart before going after Sora, Donald and Goofy for annoying him about knowing the heart better. However, when his back is turned, Jack helps Will stab Jones' heart; Jones falls overboard and into the maelstrom. They are forced to leave Will on the Dutchman as it sinks below the waves.
By this time, Jack was taken hostage by Jones and Tia Dalma, the sea goddess in mortal form, was released by the pirates in the hope she would help. Sora encourages his friends to keep fighting. The Pearl and the Dutchman enter a whirlpool, followed by the Leviathan. Luxord appears on Sora's ship, wishing to take the chest despite Sora telling him it's useless to the Organization. Regardless, Luxord summons the Kraken to restrain the Pearl. Freeing the Pearl, Sora, Donald and Goofy board the Dutchman, where they help Jack fight Jones.

Returning to the Pearl, they wonder what to do next until the Dutchman rises again, with Will having taken Jones' place as captain. Double-teaming the Endevour, Beckett's ship, both the Dutchman and Pearl riddled the ship with cannon fire as a stunned Beckett can do nothing but accept his defeat. The rest of the East India Trading Company forces withdraw, igniting a celebration among the pirate ships. However, Sora notices Elizabeth sadly looking over at Will. Gibbs explains that Davy Jones was cursed to only be able to walk on land one day every ten years; anyone who takes his place as captain has to suffer the same curse. Making matters worse is the two were only just married. As Elizabeth leaves to spend her one day with Will, Sora notes how unfair it is they only have a day together every ten years. However, Jack tells Sora that he should know best that even if its for a short time, people can convey what's in their hearts. Sora cheers up, resolved to continue his quest to find Roxas and Ventus. Unseen by everyone else, the Leviathan dissolves into crabs, which sink below the waves; Calypso's aid has come to an end.
Will and Elizabeth join the fight, but Will is fatally stabbed by Jones. Sora, Donald and Goofy distract Jones, allowing Jack to help Will stab Jones' heart in the chest. Leaving Will behind, everyone returns to the Pearl; moments later, the Dutchman resurfaces with Will in command. Both ships fire on the Endeavour, killing Beckett and ending his reign of terror. Gibbs reveals Will was saved by taking on Jones' curse, but at the cost of having to ferry souls to the afterlife in exchange for one day ashore every ten years. Jack assures Sora that one day is enough for hearts to connect.

After Xehanort's defeat, Will leaves to take on Jones' duty of ferrying souls to the next world; he has also left his heart inside the chest, to be guarded by Elizabeth. Elsewhere, Barbossa steals the Black Pearl again. Jack and Gibbs are let looking dumbfounded.
Later, after Xehanort's defeat, Elizabeth watches as Will leaves to carry out his duty. In Port Royal, Jack and Gibbs watch as the Black Pearl sails away.

Trivia
* Jack's dialogue when he meets his allies in Davy Jones Locker is censored. Originally, he said "four of you have tried to kill me in the past; one of you succeeded"; in the game its changed to "four of you have tired to annihilate me."
*Davy Jones' heart is not seen for the same reason, leaving it in the chest.
*The Kraken is also still around, as opposed to the film, where it's dead. It replaces Davy Jones' crew in some scenes, where its tentacles knock people around.

The Caribbean is a world in Kingdom Hearts III. It is based on the Disney film series Pirates of the Caribbean. It is an expansion to the Kingdom Hearts II world of Port Royal, appending the sea and isles surrounding the port, as well as the purgatory realm of Davy Jones' Locker.

Development[edit]

The Caribbean was included in the game because Port Royal was a well-received and popular world in Kingdom Hearts II, and the developers wanted at least one live-action world in Kingdom Hearts III. It is based primarily on the third film, At World's End, rather than the second film, Dead Man's Chest, which ended on a cliffhanger.

Settings and Areas[edit]

Kingdom Hearts III[edit]

The world contains two areas that can be freely explored: the High Seas and Port Royal. Underwater exploration is made fully available to Sora, Donald and Goofy by diving in any of the ocean segments within the world. Unlike in Port Royal in Kingdom Hearts II, the world is set during the daytime.

There are a couple of areas unexplorable outside of the main story such as Davy Jones' Locker (デイヴィ・ジョーンズ・ロッカー Deivi Jōnzu Rokkā?), where souls of the dead are sentenced to eternal damnation, and Over the Edge (世界の果て Sekai no Hate?, lit. "The World's End"), the waters that separate the locker from the land of the living.

The High Seas[edit]

An overview of the High Seas.

The High Seas (カリブ海 Karibu-kai?, lit. "Caribbean Sea") are a vast ocean area consisting of 10 explorable islands. The map is separated into the Northern Waters (北海域 Hokkaiiki?, lit. "Northern Ocean Region"), the Southern Waters (南海域 Nankaiiki?, lit. "Southern Ocean Region"), and the Port Royal Waters (ポートロイヤル近海 Pōto Roiyaru Kinkai?, lit. "Port Royal Coastal Waters") around Port Royal's entry point. The islands are visualized on the map aboard the Leviathan or Black Pearl, but must first be traveled to on ship to be checked off. Following this, they can then be accessed by utilizing the fast-travel feature.

The island that must be explored during the story is the Huddled Isles (群島 Guntō?, lit. "Archipelago"). The island's entry point features a small resting area which leads to a maze-like undersea cavern called the Undersea Cavern (海底洞窟 Kaitei Dōkutsu?). Deep within the cavern is a large cave structure where the Lightning Angler is fought. Directly following this area is a current which leads a large above the surface cave where Battlegate 10 is located.

Traveling north during the story leads to Shipwreck Cove (難破船入り江 Nanpasen Irie?), where the final battle against Davy Jones and the Flying Dutchman takes place. However, the cove itself does not appear within the game, and the area becomes closed off afterwards.

The other islands which make up the High Seas are:

 • Sandbar Isle (砂の島 Suna no Shima?, lit. "Sand Island"): A ring-shaped island with an explorable underwater region in the center. An additional elevated explorable level and diving section are located on the island's north point. Located in the Southern Waters.
 • Ship's End (船の墓場 Fune no Hakaba?, lit. "Ship Graveyard"): An island with a small entry point and a large underwater section comprised of several shipwrecks. Located in the Southern Waters.
 • Exile Island (流人の孤島 Runin no Kotō?, lit. "Exile's Lonely Island"): A small, circular island in the Southern Waters.
 • Horseshoe Island (馬蹄島 Bateijima?): A large island composed of a wide white sand beach and a large stone arch behind it. Located in the Southern Waters.
 • Isle of Luck (幸運の小島 Kōun no Kojima?, lit. "Small Island of Good Luck"): A small, circular island with a large inaccessible rock structure behind it. Located in the Northern Waters.

Port Royal[edit]

Port Royal (ポートロイヤル Pōto Roiyaru?) is greatly expanded upon from its appearance in Kingdom Hearts II. On the east side of the port are the Docks ( Minato?, lit. "Harbor") where the Leviathan is docked. The Dockway Path (港へ続く道 Minato e Tsudzuku Michi?, lit. "Road to the Harbor") north of the docks leads to the Settlement (高台 Kōdai?, lit. "High Ground"). This area consists of housing structures, with the Seaport (波止場 Hatoba?, lit. "Wharf") on the south end. Continuing west of this area is the town bridge and waterfall, which leads to the Fort ( Toride?). Within this area are the prison cells where various pirates are contained, as well as featuring members of Cutler Beckett's navy. At the outside-center of the fort is where the Watermelon Flan is located. Directly north of this area is where the fort's cannons are located in addition to the Port's symbolic bell.

Story[edit]

Kingdom Hearts III[edit]

Vexen and Luxord are there as well. Vexen is puzzled by how Davy Jones can live without a heart, believing it holds the secret to perfecting his replicas. Luxord tells him to reign in his curiosity, and allow him to collect the chest as per their orders.

The Leviathan docks at Port Royal for repairs; oddly, white crabs are needed for it. Once the ship is fixed, Jack reveals he's a copy sent by the sea goddess to help; the real him and their friends are facing Beckett's armada at Shipwreck Cove.

Later, after Xehanort's defeat, Elizabeth watches as Will leaves to carry out his duty. In Port Royal, Jack and Gibbs watch as the Black Pearl sails away.

Characters[edit]

 • The Brethren Court is mentioned.

Character Design[edit]

Unlike their previous visits to Port Royal, where they retained their default designs, Sora and company wear proper pirate attire while visiting The Caribbean. Sora dons captain's garb as the de facto "leader", while Donald and Goofy wear crewman clothes.
