A Nobody is what remains of those of a strong will who have lost their hearts. The first generic Nobodies are seen in Kingdom Hearts II; although Xemnas appeared as early as Kingdom Hearts Final Mix, it was unknown that he was a Nobody. They are made up of body and soul. Depending how strong their human hearts were, the body and soul will take a human or monster-like form.

While this enemy type makes its first appearance in Kingdom Hearts II, members of Organization XIII appeared in Kingdom Hearts Final Mix and Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories, albeit as unclassified opponents.

The Nobody emblem resembles a splintered, upside-down heart. It originates from Terra's memories of the Terra's Mark symbol, which are inherited by Xemnas.fact It is also present on Master Xehanort's Keyblade Armor. The symbol first appears in Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories, where it marks the names of sleights used by Organization members and the Riku Replica, as well as the head of the Specter.

Xehanort's experiments culminated in his fellow apprentices' hearts and the creation of his own Heartless, Ansem, Seeker of Darkness, and Nobody, Xemnas. Together with Xigbar, the Nobody of Master Xehanort's co-conspirator, Braig, Xemnas founded Organization XIII, recruiting the Nobodies of the remaining apprentices as founding members. They recruited additional members and took command over the lesser Nobodies.

Sora is coaxed into entering Castle Oblivion by Marluxia, who attempts to manipulate Sora using Naminé's power over his memory. He and Larxene tell Naminé that if she inserts herself in Sora's memory, she can be "somebody" instead of just a Nobody.

Nobodies are typically grey, and usually possess a deformed humanoid appearance. Lower Nobodies appear to be mostly clothing rather than body, and thus possess an elasticity which is a common trait in fighting them. Gummi Nobodies have a more technological and streamlined appearance than Gummi Heartless, and also come in higher numbers. The Nobody insignia is a major element in the Nobody appearance, appearing in many weapons and breeds of Nobodies. Nobodies with stronger wills possess completely normal human figures.
Lesser Nobodies are humanoid enemies that are primarily grey in coloration. They possess a certain elasticity that enables them to contort their bodies into a variety of shapes. Lesser Nobodies bear the Nobody emblem.

Nobodies
Nobodies are born when someone loses their heart. They are the remaining parts left behind by the heart: the body, giving a Nobody form, and the soul, giving the Nobody life. However, only those with a strong will, such as Sora, are actually able to produce Nobodies. If a person's heart wasn't strong enough, then their body and soul will simply fade away. Those with the strongest wills manage to retain human forms, with only slight changes in appearance, while the rest possess malformed, barely humanoid appearances, such as with Creepers and Dusks. Nobodies become more humanoid depending on how strong their human heart was.

Nobodies are created when strong-willed individuals lose their hearts. The bodies that remain give Nobodies their form, while the abandoned souls give them life. People with the strongest wills are able to retain human form when they become Nobodies.

All Nobodies vanish from the Realm of Light upon their creation at the loss of a heart and the creation of a Heartless. They are born in a world in-between the Realms of Light and Darkness, such as Twilight Town or Castle Oblivion. However, because of this and their lack of hearts, they are shunned by both Light and Darkness, and do not truly exist.
At birth, Nobodies are rejected by both light and darkness. Instead, they are made to walk the realm between and doomed to a state of non-existence.

Because of their missing hearts, Nobodies are said to be incapable of feeling emotions by every credible source. Some humanoid Nobodies pretend to possess emotions, fooling others as well as themselves. On the other hand, Nobodies manage to keep their memories of their former lives, but unusual Nobodies that were born from special circumstances, such as Roxas, lack memories of their former selves. Through these memories, Nobodies are able to remember what it was like to have emotions, thus allowing them to respond correctly to specific situations. Despite their lack of emotions, Nobodies are able to think for themselves and attack with definite planning (as opposed to the Heartless, which are mindless and function on pure animal instinct). Nobodies also seem to be able to experience physical sensations, such as pain, as they negatively react to taking damage, and Naminé passed out from the pain of being impaled on Marluxia's thorns (this was seen only in the Chain of Memories manga). The Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories manga and several other media forms provide an alternative view, saying that they do have emotions, but are plagued by a feeling of uncertainty and emptiness due to not having hearts. The manga further displays this "plagued" feeling by showing the members engaging in tasks like jigsaw puzzles, cooking, and reading to try to fill their emptiness.
Nobodies are said to be incapable of experiencing emotion. While they tend to retain the memories they made as humans, the feelings they display are merely an act. Memories alone enable Nobodies to correctly respond to the situations in which they find themselves. Despite this, Nobodies are able to think for themselves and are organized, whereas the Heartless are more instinctual enemies. Nobodies feel physical pain, and in the Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories manga, they are seen reading, cooking, or doing jigsaw puzzles in an attempt to fill their emptiness.

Although never stated, the events of the Battle of the 1000 Heartless implied that Nobodies are stronger than Heartless, since the Nobodies were able to easily overpower the Heartless. At the very least, they are just as powerful, and the fact that they are much more intelligent than Heartless only heightens the threat that they pose.
It is possible for Nobodies to grow new hearts. Master Xehanort and Xemnas use this to their advantage, and Sora learns this when he experiences Roxas's pain first-hand at the end of his hijacked Mark of Mastery exam. In Sora's words, one must "have a heart to cry."

Nobodies do have the ability to regrow hearts, but the specific conditions to do so are currently unknown. Nobodies such as Roxas and Naminé seem to posses true emotions since they were born without any memories of their past lives due to the unusual nature of their births, and thus had no basis for any pretend emotions. Additionally, they co-existed with their original selves (Sora, the Keyblade Wielder of the Realm of Light and Kairi, a Princess of Heart, respectively) and held half of their essence within them, thus making them more human than other Nobodies. Although Axel denies the idea of feeling emotions, he shares a bond with Roxas and claims that Roxas makes him "almost feel like he has a heart" and has acted on his feelings of friendship a number of times.
When defeated, Nobodies fade back into darkness. Their defeat, in combination with the destruction of their original selves' Heartless, restores their human forms. Completed once more, the Nobodies' memories remain intact.

When defeated, Nobodies fade into darkness; however, when a person's Heartless and Nobody both are defeated, that person is restored to their original, complete form, with their memories from their time as a Nobody intact. Lea, Ienzo, Dilan, and Aeleus all return to their human forms after their Nobodies are defeated; presumably their Heartless had been defeated at some point.<!--replace with cite to journal--><ref>Famitsu Weekly: Nomura Interview on KH3D, Interviewer: "So their Heartless, you’re saying they were defeated somewhere along the line?" / Tetsuya Nomura: "Well Sora has defeated many Heartless before now, hasn’t he? ==Replica==

A Replica is an artificial copy of another being that can be considered a special type of Nobody. The first Replica that appears in the series is the Riku Replica, who debuts in Kingdom Hearts Chain of Memories. Xion is later revealed to be another Replica, Experiment No. i in the Organization's Replica Program. In the manga adaptation of Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories, Vexen also creates a large number of Replicas of himself, who survive into the events of Kingdom Hearts II.

While the exact method of creating a Replica is unknown, a couple different methods have been demonstrated for the copying process, with different results. The Riku Replica was created using data collected by Vexen during his fight with the real Riku. Xion, an imperfect Replica of Roxas, was created by Xemnas from Sora's memories. Due to her imperfections, Xion's appearance varied in the eyes of different people, but because of Sora's powerful memories of Kairi, she resembled her to those that were closest to her.

Despite their nature as copies, Replicas have demonstrated the ability to develop personalities and a powerful sense of self, and can also develop hearts, just like regular Nobodies.fact This creates a great deal of internal conflict when they discover what they truly are. When the Riku Replica discovers he is a copy of the real Riku, he becomes obsessed with proving himself to be more than a "fake," as well as for his existence to be his own. Xion, upon discovering what she truly is, starts referring to herself as a "puppet"; she is unsure of how to handle the revelation. In the manga, the Vexen Replicas are very quiet and sad compared to the original Vexen, telling the Riku Replica that they "are all failed replicas."
The exact way to create a Replica is unknown. Vexen, Organization XIII's Number IV, fashions several Replicas of himself. He also uses data he collected from the real Riku to produce the Riku Replica. Xemnas, meanwhile, uses Sora's memories to make Xion, an imperfect Replica of Roxas.

Replicas have unique abilities. They are capable of absorbing other individuals to increase their strength; in Kingdom Hearts Re:Chain of Memories, the Riku Replica absorbs Zexion's life-force to steal the Nobody's power, while Xion exists solely to absorb Roxas and become "the new Sora," thus preventing the real Sora from ever awakening from his slumber.
Despite being "fakes," Replicas develop unique personalities and possess a strong sense of self. They tend to become conflicted when they discover what they truly are, and they disappear when defeated.

Replicas, like Nobodies, fade into darkness after they are defeated. Xion, however, is absorbed by Roxas, therefore she continues to live on inside him, as well as inside Sora.
Replicas have the same skills as the individuals used to create them. They also have the unique ability to absorb other individuals.

The Nobody emblem.

A Nobody (ノーバディ Nōbadi?) is the body and soul of a strong-willed individual who has lost their heart. While this enemy type makes its first appearance in Kingdom Hearts II, members of Organization XIII appeared in Kingdom Hearts Final Mix and Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories, albeit as unclassified opponents.

The Nobody emblem is a splintered, upside-down heart that resembles Terra's Mark as Xemnas remembers it.[citation needed] It appears for the first time in Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories, in which it is emblazoned on the Specter's head and designates sleights used by the Riku Replica and members of Organization XIII.

Story

Between Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep and Kingdom Hearts

Xehanort and Ansem the Wise's other apprentices lose their hearts and become Nobodies. These six found Organization XIII and seek out new members.

Kingdom Hearts

Sora becomes a Heartless in Hollow Bastion. This creates two Nobodies: Roxas and Naminé. The former appears in Twilight Town and joins Organization XIII, while the latter finds herself in Castle Oblivion and in Organization XIII's custody.

On a return trip to Hollow Bastion, Sora battles and defeats Xemnas.

Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories

Marluxia, the Organization's Number XI, leads Sora and his friends to Castle Oblivion. There, he forces Naminé to tamper with Sora's memories in an attempt to gain the Keyblade's power.

When Riku awakens in Castle Oblivion's lower levels, he faces some of the Organization's founding members and learns Nobodies belong to neither the light nor darkness.

Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days

Organization XIII uses Roxas and Xion to collect hearts. This is in accordance with its plan to create Kingdom Hearts, which will enable its members to become whole again. The Organization also searches for the Chamber of Waking and develops the Replica Program.

Roxas, who discusses being a Nobody with his friend Axel, battles Dusks and Samurais in a series of three trials at The World That Never Was: Mission 10, Mission 33, and Mission 71. He confronts more when he attempts to abandon Organization XIII.

Kingdom Hearts II

After Roxas is placed in a simulated Twilight Town, Axel is ordered to retrieve him. The Organization's Number VIII teams up with a series of lesser Nobodies in an attempt to get his friend back.

Sora, Donald, and Goofy learn about Nobodies from Yen Sid at the Mysterious Tower. They clash with these foes multiple times, and they destroy the surviving members of Organization XIII: Xemnas, Xigbar, Xaldin, Saïx, Demyx, and Luxord.

Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance

In The World That Never Was, a resurrected Xemnas tells Sora Nobodies can grow new hearts and feel emotions. It is revealed this fact was deliberately kept from the other members of Organization XIII, who were meant to inherit Master Xehanort's heart through Kingdom Hearts.

Design

A Dusk, a common lesser Nobody.

Lesser Nobodies are humanoid enemies that are primarily grey in coloration. They possess a certain elasticity that enables them to contort their bodies into a variety of shapes. Lesser Nobodies bear the Nobody emblem.

Gummi Nobodies come in a variety of colors and have streamlined, machine-like bodies. Like lesser Nobodies, they also bear the Nobody emblem.

The members of Organization XIII, Nobodies who possess the strongest of wills, retain their human forms. Their bodies lack the Nobody emblem, which instead influences the look of their weapons.

Nature

Nobodies

Nobodies are empty shells left behind by strong hearts.

Nobodies are created when strong-willed individuals lose their hearts. The bodies that remain give Nobodies their form, while the abandoned souls give them life. People with the strongest wills are able to retain human form when they become Nobodies.

At birth, Nobodies are rejected by both light and darkness. Instead, they are made to walk the realm between and doomed to a state of non-existence.

When defeated, Nobodies fade back into darkness. Their defeat, in combination with the destruction of their original selves' Heartless, restores their human forms. Completed once more, the Nobodies' memories remain intact.

High-ranking Nobodies can be reduced to a lower rank. Members of Organization XIII consider being turned into a Dusk a form of discipline.

Replicas

Manipulated by Axel, the Riku Replica eliminates Zexion to obtain new powers.

Replicas (レプリカ Repurika?) are artificial copies of people. Created by Organization XIII, they are a special type of Nobody that first appears in Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories.

Despite being "fakes," Replicas develop unique personalities and possess a strong sense of self. They tend to become conflicted when they discover what they truly are, and they disappear when defeated.

Replicas have the same skills as the individuals used to create them. They also have the unique ability to absorb other individuals.
