Buzz Lightyear is a toy based on a Space Ranger from Toy Box who is a party member in Kingdom Hearts III. He originated in the Disney/Pixar film Toy Story.

Development

The proposal folder shown to Buena Vista included plans for a world based on Toy Story in the original Kingdom Hearts. For Kingdom Hearts II a model of Buzz Lightyear and Woody were created for a similar purpose but according to the series' director Tetsuya Nomura, there was never a chance to present them to Disney so the idea was scrapped. Both the world and the characters finally made their appearance in Kingdom Hearts III as party members in Toy Box.

Story

Kingdom Hearts III

Unknown to Buzz, he, Woody, Rex, Hamm, the Little Green Men and four of Green Army Men were taken from their original world and placed in a copy called the Toy Box by Young Xehanort as part of an experiment to study the nature of their hearts. Buzz decided that the best course of action was to simply wait around for the return of the humans and the rest of the toys. However, several days passed, and nothing changed; except Toy Troopers arrived to torment them, commanded by someone wearing a black coat, whom they thought was another toy. Buzz also discovered that his laser had actually begun working, which he used to fight off the intruders. One day, when they were about to spring a surprise attack, Sora, Donald and Goofy arrived and took out the "intruders". Buzz reacted to their presence with skepticism and hostility. Rex and Hamm mistook Sora for Yozora from Verum Rex, a game they had been playing. Sora explained that the intruders were called the Heartless and they had been fighting them for a long time. Buzz wondered how this was possible, but Sora was silenced by Donald. Per Sora's prompting, Woody decided that they had to look for clues to find their friends as waiting had gotten them nowhere. After Sarge reported seeing the black coated man at Galaxy Toys, Buzz agreed to accompany them.

At the Galaxy Toys store, Young Xehanort appeared and revealed that he had "split the world in two" in order to see how the bonds between the toys and their owner would withstand the strain of being apart. Heartless were placed in Gigas toys to attack them, with Buzz believing that they were moving on their own. However, once Sora took command of Gigas to fight back, Buzz saw to his surprise a Heartless exit the cockpit and fade away. Buzz asked Sora what Young Xehanort meant by splitting the world, and Sora explained that the world they're in is fake, while everyone else is in the original version of it. Unwilling to accept the truth, Buzz instead scoffed at the idea; he then accused Sora of suffering delusions like he first did. Sarge then reported that Rex, Hamm and the LGMs had gone missing. They tracked Rex to action figures, where the Heartless had taken control of kaiju toys. Rex accidentally helped by crashing into one, defeating it. Buzz assured Rex that he could do a important mission by guarding the entrance, subtly tricking him into waiting for them. They next tracked Hamm down to the girl toy section, where they found him trapped in a doll house. A possessed doll attacked them, but was defeated. Buzz began worrying that they all could be possessed by the Heartless if these toys could fall victim. However, Sora assured him that as long as they kept heart, they would be fine. Spotting a UFO toy, everyone raced after it, finding the LGMs willingly being abducted. After they were resuced, Buzz decided that there were no clues at the toy store and it was time to leave.

Much to Buzz's frustration, everyone learned that Rex had left his post to find proof that they could trust Sora. They followed him to the video game section, where they saw a poster for Verum Rex. Seeing the minor similarity between Yozora and Sora, Buzz concluded the trio really were video game characters. When Rex asked for some time to read a strategy guide for the game, Buzz responded in the negative; they had to get back home. However, Young Xehanort appeared and told them that his experiment wasn't over. When Sora voiced opposition to the idea, Buzz was possessed by a Marionette and began trying to zap Woody with his laser; however, Goofy blocked the attacks with his shield. While Donald and Rex attempted to stop him, Sora was blasted into the Verum Rex demo game, forcing him to fight it to get out. Young Xehanort took Buzz with him through a dark corridor.

Buzz was later found in a dark area, suspended in the air. Young Xehanort explained that all the darkness that Sora, Donald, Goofy and Woody were seeing came from Buzz's own heart. This darkness was the despair Buzz felt at being separated from Andy. However, Woody assured Young Xehanort that toys are loved by their owners and the friendship between them is stronger than the despair he's trying to inflict on them. Buzz was pulled free by Woody, who joked he had been switched to his "dark and stormy mode". Buzz shared a laugh with Woody, which didn't last long. Young Xehanort fled, but not before giving life to the darkness he extracted from Buzz. It took the form of the giant Heartless the King of Toys. After defeating it, Buzz apologized to Sora for his behavior; however, Sora told him he knew Buzz was only looking out for his friends. While none of them knew when the worlds would merge back together, Buzz was happy they would have some more time with their new friends. He then encouraged them to continue their fight, telling them to go "to infinity and beyond."

Toy Box later merged back with the original world, unknown to the toys. Buzz was talking with Woody when both of them notice the doorhandle rattle. It meant they were back home and Andy was coming to play with them. Pretending to be inanimate, Buzz shared a smile with Woody.

Appearance

Buzz is a Space Ranger action figure. He has a large build and a very prominent chin. His head and neck are covered in a tight purple cowl. He has a white space suit with a green chest plate featuring red, green, and blue buttons on the right side and a round red button on his left used to deploy and collapse the wings from his jet pack. His right arm ordinarily has a light bulb that flashes red to simulate a laser, however during the events of Kingdom Hearts III, it is replaced by a working laser. He has a collapsible, clear dome helmet that is controlled by the purple knobs on the side of it. There is a black coil around his waist.

Personality

Buzz is good friends with Woody, who helped him through his early delusional phase of belieiving he was the actual Buzz Lightyear character instead of a toy. He is also a voice of reason and reassurance among his friends; he tends to calm the normally nervous Rex by complimenting him on even accidental help he gives and makes simply tasks seem very important to give his friend confidence. Buzz is cautious and skeptical following the disappearance of his friends; he believes the best course of action is to wait around in Andy's Room until everyone comes back. (Unknown to everyone, this caused a lot of darkness in his heart from the despair.) Despite their help repelling the Heartless. Buzz distrusts Sora, Donald, and Goofy initially, becoming more suspicious of them as Donald refuses to let Sora give a lot of answers.

Buzz's skepticism borders on the ridiculous at times; despite the fact he's seen things that normal wouldn't be possible in his original world, he refuses to believe that they've been taken to an alternate version of it. In fact, when Sora explains in detail what Young Xehanort meant by splitting the world in two, Buzz thinks he's suffering delusions like he first did and actually thinks he's the character from the game he's supposedly from. However, after seeing the Heartless possess toys, it seems Buzz seemed to become more open-minded about "supernatural" things. He even warms up Sora, Donald and Goofy, apologizing for his behavior; however, Sora knew he was just looking out for his friends.

Origin

Buzz Lightyear first appeared in 1995, in Pixar's first feature film Toy Story, voiced by Tim Allen, and has since appeared in its sequels, as well as several television specials and shorts. The character also appeared in Disney/Pixar's animated film Buzz Lightyear of Star Command: The Adventure Begins, and the animated television series Buzz Lightyear of Star Command, which both are about the character which the toy in Toy Story is based on. For the television series, he was voiced by Patrick Warburton. Mike MacRae served as Buzz's voice actor for all Disney-released video games involving the character, and reprised his role for Kingdom Hearts III.

In the 1995 film, Buzz Lightyear is the newest toy in the collection of a boy named Andy. He initially believes that he is the real Buzz Lightyear, a space ranger on a mission to defeat his arch-nemesis, the evil Emperor Zurg, and repeatedly attempts to return to space. Woody, Andy's favorite toy, is jealous about the amount of time Andy now spends with Buzz and tried to hide him from Andy. In the process, he gets them both lost and in the possession of Sid, the toy-torturer who lives next door. In Sid's house, Buzz sees a commercial for the Buzz Lightyear action figure and finally realizes he is just a toy, sending him into a depression. With Woody's help, he regains his composure and the two of them escape back to Andy and become close friends.
