Kingdom Hearts III
Tangled (2010)

A girl with a lot of hair and a lot of heart. She set foot outside her tower, for the first time in her life, to see the lights in the sky that she had watched from her window since childhood.
"Best... day... ever!"
—Rapunzel after escaping her tower

Rapunzel is a character from the Kingdom of Corona in Kingdom Hearts III. She is one of the New Seven Hearts. She originated in the Disney film Tangled.

She lives with Mother Gothel and Pascal in a secluded tower.

Story

Before Kingdom Hearts III

When Rapunzel was a baby, she was kidnapped by Mother Gothel from her real parents upon discovering that her hair had the ability to heal. Gothel then raised Rapunzel as her own daughter within a tower, hiding her from the rest of the world by warning her of its dangers, all to exploit her mystical hair to keep herself eternally young.

Throughout the years, Rapunzel would watch the floating lanterns that appear on her birthday and begins to yearn to see them in person.

Around a year before Kingdom Hearts III, Rapunzel unknowingly became a the host of one of the seven pure lights and became one of the next Princesses of Heart.[citation needed]

On her birthday, Rapunzel crosses paths with a criminal named Flynn Rider. She blackmails him into helping her see the flying lanterns which mysteriously appear on her birthday each year. After leaving her tower, she encounters Sora, Donald, and Goofy. She is bewildered by the nature of the outside world. Deeper into the forest, the group is ambushed by a group of tough Nobodies, causing Rapunzel and Flynn to flee. Sometime when Flynn is away momentarily, Rapunzel is found by Gothel, who gives her the tiara Flynn stole, plotting to split the two of them apart.[1] Rapunzel and Flynn are eventually reunited with Sora, Donald and Goofy who also find Maximus and take him along.

The group eventually makes it to Corona where Rapunzel starts a dance with the townsfolk. At night, Rapunzel and Flynn are ready to watch the lanterns. Although Rapunzel is concerned it will not be like her imagination, Flynn tells her that she can find a new dream anyway. Rapunzel and Flynn have a nice time watching the lanterns fly. However, after the show, he mysteriously leaves with his crown on a boat. Marluxia tells Rapunzel she does not belong with Flynn and summons Nobodies, frightening her enough to cause her to run away. Rapunzel notices Mother Gothel attack them with a log and they disappear. The two then return to the tower.

At the tower, Rapunzel realizes she is the lost princess of Corona and confronts Mother Gothel. In an argument, Rapunzel realizes Flynn is about to be hanged for his crimes. Flynn manages to escape his death sentence and returns to the tower where he finds Rapunzel bound and gagged by Gothel who stabs him from behind. Rapunzel tells Gothel that if she lets her heal Flynn with the powers of her hair, Rapunzel will do whatever Gothel ask, even sacrificing her freedom for the rest of her life. Gothel accepts and while trying to help Flynn, he tells her that if Rapunzel heals him, she will die. He chops off her hair with a mirror shard, causing her blonde hair to become brunette and removing its healing properties, causing Gothel to die.

Rapunzel and Eugene embrace.

Rapunzel holds Flynn as he dies and they reveal to each other that their new dream was being together. Rapunzel cries as Flynn dies, although her tears caused her remaining power to revive Flynn. Rapunzel leaves the tower with Flynn and she informs everyone that she is going to return home to be with her real family. It is also revealed Flynn has decided to use his original name Eugene.

Sometime after Xehanort's defeat, Rapunzel and Eugene embrace in the town of Corona.

Appearance

Rapunzel is a young woman with inhumanly long blonde hair and green eyes. She wears a pinkish-purple dress with white sleeves, and is barefoot. While at Corona, her hair is braided with flowers. After Flynn cuts her hair off, it becomes shoulder length and brown.

Personality

"I've spent my entire life hiding from people who would use me for my power when I should have been hiding from YOU! ...You were wrong about the world! And you were wrong about me! And I will never let you use my hair AGAIN!"
—Rapunzel confronting Mother Gothel

Rapunzel is a kind and curious young woman. Due to her sheltered lifestyle, she often comes across as socially awkward. However, her introverted personality was short-lived as Flynn's meddling cause her to think of the outside world more and it empowers her to make a decision to leave the castle to witness the floating lights at the kingdom. Rapunzel is compassionate, kind, and bubbly, but can come off as naive and indecisive when she was having a war with herself after escaping from her tower, without Mother Gothel's knowledge and permission.

Rapunzel does have a tendency to be slow to notice things. Despite Sora, Donald and Goofy being with Flynn the entire time she was going through her episode of debating to explore the world or go back home, she does not notice them until Sora speaks up.

When Sora, Donald, and Goofy appeared, Rapunzel is initially very skeptical of them, but warms up to them instantly. She is frightened when a Dandelion Heartless scares her, but soon decides to bravely fight it alongside Sora and the party, and later tries to help fight when Reapers attack.

Abilities

Rapunzel uses her hair in battle to swing and fight enemies. She improvises by hurling her hair to tree branches and swing around to damage nearby enemies. She can also hold her hair and spin around furiously to deal damage in a wide area. Rapunzel could also use her hair as a whip to deal damage to faraway Heartless with ease. Her hair is strong enough to be use as a rope as she and Sora are able to swing together from one hill to another.

After completing Kingdom of Corona, Rapunzel will no longer be a party member upon subsequent visits due to the loss of her hair.

Origin

Rapunzel, embraced by Mother Gothel, from Tangled.

Rapunzel first appeared in the 2010 Disney animated film Tangled, voiced by Mandy Moore, inspired by the protagonist of the original Brothers Grimm fairy tale. Rapunzel is the lost princess of Corona who was kidnapped as a baby from her parents Queen Arianna and King Frederic by a greedy woman named Mother Gothel, who seeks to use the magical powers of Rapunzel's hair to live as long as possible. Having been imprisoned by Gothel for eighteen years in a secluded tower with only her pet chameleon Pascal for other friendship, Rapunzel has developed a strong desire to explore the outside world, but Gothel tries to end this desire by saying it is a cruel and dangerous place. On her eighteenth birthday, Rapunzel encounters a young man named Flynn Rider who enters the tower looking for a place to hide after stealing a tiara. After locking Flynn up and convincing Gothel to go on a three-day journey to find paint for her birthday, Rapunzel blackmails Flynn into helping her to find the lanterns that have appeared on her birthday.
