Oogie Boogie is an antagonist in Kingdom Hearts, Kingdom Hearts Chain of Memories and Kingdom Hearts II. He originated from Tim Burton's stop-motion Disney film, The Nightmare Before Christmas.

Story

Kingdom Hearts

Oogie Boogie is a member of the Villains. During their meetings about the events of Traverse Town and Deep Jungle, Oogie only adds snide remarks instead of contributing any useful ideas to the conversation. Despite this, he does his part for the Villains' plan by making sure Halloween Town is vulnerable to the darkness and looking for the keyhole of his home world.

However, Oogie's machinations were halted upon Jack Skellington having Dr. Finkelstein create a device to pacify the Heartless, reducing the threatening creatures to mere performers for Jack's plans for Halloween. Luckily, the device was damaged in an explosion around the same time Sora, Donald, and Goofy arrived, freeing the Heartless to terrorize Halloween Town and search for the keyhole.

Upon hearing from his minions, Lock, Shock, and Barrel, that Jack was making an artificial heart to help guide the Heartless in the Halloween Festival, Oogie ordered them to steal it. Upon receiving the heart, Oogie swallowed it as soon as his uninvited guests, Sora, Donald, Goofy, and Jack Skellington arrived. He tried to summon an army of Heartless to do them in, but as the heart was not genuine, not as many Heartless flocked around him as he had hoped. Out of anger of being disrespected by such lower life forms, Oogie activated his Torture Chamber weapons and battled the group with his few Heartless.

Soon after being defeated by having his bugs spilt out of his body, Oogie succumbed to the powers of darkness and merged with his own manor. Merging with it, he attacked Sora and his friends once more. Sora battled Oogie's Manor, destroying it and Oogie by extinguishing the Shadow Globs empowering it.

Kingdom Hearts Chain of Memories

In Castle Oblivion, Oogie Boogie appears as a figment of Sora's memories. He attempts to steal Jack's research project, which, in this case, is a Memory Potion, even slamming Sally across the room as he does so. Eventually, he succeeds in his plan, but fails again when he drank the potion and became terrified of what he remembered, though it is never quite explained what that was.

During Riku's travels through the Castle basements, he is encountered as one of Riku's dark memories.

Kingdom Hearts II

A year later, Maleficent revives Oogie Boogie upon the request of Lock, Shock, and Barrel. Unfortunately, Oogie Boogie suffers from anterograde amnesia and has difficulty remembering things since his resurrection. While he is capable of remembering Jack from before his defeat a year earlier, and Maleficent as well, he forgets Sandy Claws's identity quickly, having just met him.

Oogie begins to deflate as insects leak out of him.

Under Maleficent's orders, Oogie Boogie captures Santa Claus in Christmas Town to turn him into a Heartless and converts the present making machine into a Heartless making machine. Just as Sora, Donald, and Goofy discover Oogie's plans, Oogie abandons Maleficent's plans, saying that she was just cramping his style. Angered, Maleficent leaves, and Oogie once again battles against the heroes, failing once again, coming apart at the seams just like last time. This time, Donald stomps on Oogie's brain bug to ensure he will never come back again.

Design

Oogie's outside appearance is very simple. He is covered from head to toe in a grey burlap sack, and an obvious seam is visible along the sides. Oogie is quite rotund, with stumpy legs and fingerless arms, a stark contrast to Jack Skellington's gaunt, tall physique. Like Jack, the "eyes" in Oogie's head are featureless black holes, as is the inside of his mouth. The tip of his head extends outward and flops down, vaguely resembling Jack's Santa hat. On the inside of the sack, Oogie is a huge mass of a variety of different colored bugs. In the movie, Oogie also produces a snake from his mouth as a "tongue" to intimidate Santa Claus by hissing at him. The majority of Oogie's consciousness is held by one, green, earwig-like bug in his head, and it is only by squashing this one that Oogie can be killed.

Personality

Unlike the other residents of Halloween Town, who are innocent, good creatures whose job it is to scare, Oogie Boogie is the only resident of Halloween Town who is truly evil. Oogie Boogie's most dominant emotion of his personality is obviously fear. Whether it's scaring the daylights out of others, or being terrified himself, Oogie is always involved with fear. He also is shown to be considerably more dull than the other villains, although he does seem to have his smart streak every now and then. Oogie shows a love to gamble and to play games. The dice that he always throws and the fact that his boss battles take place on game boards (more torture-like game boards) make this obvious. Also, Oogie has been shown to annoy the other Disney villains in some cutscenes, seen when he tells Captain Hook that "you're no prize yourself," after which Hook angrily tells him to shut up. He is also the most sassy of the group.

Despite his menacing appearance, Oogie is nothing more than a coward, who relies on fighting dirty, too afraid to take on enemies himself, instead sending his booby traps and strange gambling devices to fight for him.

Abilities

Unlike the rest of the Disney villains, Oogie is a bit of a lightweight, and relies on his numerous and elaborate deathtraps rather than any innate strength. His traps are all murderous parodies of games of luck, befitting his obsession with chance. He traps his enemies in battles on twisted, game-like, battle grounds. With spinning razor wheels, exploding dice, gun-toting robots, and many more deadly objects, Oogie Boogie can prove himself to be a dangerous foe.

Oogie Boogie originates from Tim Burton's 1993 stop motion Disney film, The Nightmare Before Christmas. When Lock, Shock, and Barrel bring Santa Claus to Halloween Town as per Jack's order, the trio betray him and bring him to Oogie, who chains him up for torture and plans to kill him. Sally discovers this and tries to rescue Santa, but is caught by Oogie. When Jack realizes he ruined Christmas and how much Halloween needed him, he heads to Oogie's lair to free Santa and Sally, who are nearly dumped into a fiery molten pit. After Jack battles his way past Oogie's gambling devices, Oogie attempts to escape, but Jack manages to pull on one of his loose threads. This shreds out Oogie's clothing, revealing him to be a colony of bugs wrapped in sacking. His bugs fall into his batch of Snake and Spider Stew, and his 'brain bug' is stepped on by Santa.
