A Gate as it appears in Kingdom Hearts II.

After the events of Kingdom Hearts, many of the worlds that had been threatened by the Heartless are restored, as are the barriers that prevent travel between them. In Kingdom Hearts II, however, Yen Sid tells Sora and his friends that the worlds have prepared new pathways for them to travel upon that can be accessed by unlocking special Gates (ゲート Gēto?). Meanwhile, the Heartless and Nobodies use their own paths to infiltrate other worlds: corridors of darkness. By linking these dark pathways to the Gates between worlds, they trigger the appearance of Gummi Enemies.

On his journey to find Riku and King Mickey, Sora manages to open several Gates; this occurs when a specific item or object unique to the world that he is currently in is wrapped in light. With a gust of wind, the item proceeds to reveal its world's Keyhole as a symbol shaped like Sora's crown pendant appears on the ground beneath him. Sora then spins his Keyblade and unseals the world's Gate; he, Donald, and Goofy continue on their quest after this.
