After the events of Kingdom Hearts, many of the worlds that had been threatened by the Heartless are restored, as are the barriers that prevent travel between them. In Kingdom Hearts II, however, Yen Sid tells Sora and his friends that the worlds have prepared new pathways for them to travel upon that can be accessed by unlocking special Gates (ゲート Gēto).
