Worksheet: Twilight Town

Kingdom Hearts Chain of Memories

Twilight Town is first introduced in Kingdom Hearts Chain of Memories, but unlike all the other world's, it's not based on Sora's memories, but rather Roxas'. The world is explored through boxed-in areas heavily inspired by the real town. In cutscenes, areas such as Tram Common, the Pod Room, and The Old Mansion are visited. The last area also serving as boss arena for both Vexen, and Riku Replica.

During the game's credit Roxas is briefly seen on top of the Clock Tower at the Station Plaza.

Kingdom Hearts II

Twilight Town

Concept art of Market Street.

Twilight Town is among one of the largest worlds in Kingdom Hearts II, with many major set pieces. One of the town's bigger locations is the Market Street (商店街 Shōten Machi?), a long, winding, steeply-sloped road that leads from the lower areas of town to the top, stretching across multiple areas. The upper portion of the street is known as Station Heights (駅前通り Ekimaedōri?, lit. "Station Road"), where a few shops are located such as Wallace's weapon shop and an item shop run by Wantz, as well as a noticeboard for various jobs, which can be experience through mini-games. The lower portion of Market Street is the Tram Common (トラム広場 Toramu Hiroba?, lit. "Tram Square"), an open-market area with a free tram circling around. Many shops are found here, including Jessie's accessory shop, Biggs' armor shop, and a Moogle Shop. In the Simulated Twilight Town, the Moogle Shop is a candy shop instead. Another noticeboard mini-game jobs is found down here. Both parts of Market Street connect to the Sandlot (空き地 Akichi?, lit. "Vacant Lot"), an open area where the infamous Struggle battles take place. Both Station Heights and the Sandlot lead to the Back Alley (路地裏 Rojiura?), where Hayner's gang's hideout, The Usual Spot (いつもの場所 Itsumo no Basho?) is located. In the simulated Twilight Town, Roxas' Room (ロワサスの部屋 Rokusasu no Heya?) can be briefly seen in various cutscenes. It's several stories above ground, and has a nice view of the town.

Traveling up through the Station Heights leads to the Station Plaza (駅前広場 Ekimae Hiroba?), a large and open terrace, with a great view of the entire town. The plaza is presided over by the town's distinctive and famous Clock Tower, which, though a twelve-hour clock, has "I" at the top instead of "XII". At Station Plaza is also where the Central Station (セントラルステーション Sentoraru Sutēshon?) is found, which is a large train station, with trains that travel all over the world, including other districts of the town, as well as an unseen beach. There's also a magic train here that travels to the Mysterious Tower.

Another district of the town, Sunset Terrace (サンセット住宅街 Sansetto Jūtakugai?, lit. "Sunset Residential Area"), can be reached by taking the train at Central Station to Sunset Station (サンセットステーション Sansetto Sutēshon?). Sunset Terrace lies at the outskirts of Twilight Town and boarders to huge fields of grass, with a great view of the mountains in the distance. Another free train travels back and forth the area. Connecting to Sunset Terrace is Sunset Hill (サンセットヒル Sansetto Hiru?), a tranquil, tiny area, with a small sculpture mimicking the Clock Tower, which can also be seen from here. Underneath the town is a vast Underground Concourse (地下連絡通路 Chika Renraku Tsūro?), which has several entrances across town, located at the Back Alley, the Station Plaza, and the Tram Commons. One exit leads to the Tunnelway (トンネル Tonneru?, lit. "Tunnel"), which in turn leads back to Sunset Terrace.

To the far right of town are The Woods (町はずれの森 Machihazure no Mori?, lit. "Forest on the Outskirts of Town"), a large forest only accessible through a crack in the walls of Tram Common. Passing through The Woods leads to a gate and a courtyard belonging to The Old Mansion (屋敷前 Yashikimae?, lit. "Mansion Anterior"). Upon entering the Foyer (ロビー Robī?, lit. "Lobby"), the Mansion splits off in three different directions. On the left side of the Foyer is the Dining Room (ダイニング Dainingu?, lit. "Dining"); up the left set of stairs and through the door is The White Room (白い部屋 Shiroi Heya?), where Naminé spends a lot of her time; while up the stairs to the right lies the Library (書庫 Shoko?, lit. "Archive"). At the Library, there is a false floor that hides a staircase which goes down and leads to the Computer Room (コンピュータールーム Konpyūtā Rūmu?), where DiZ monitors the simulated Twilight Town. There's also a machine which allows transport into the simulation. The doorway to the left of the computer leads to the Basement Hall (地下広間 Chika Hōru?), where Roxas fights Axel in the simulated counterpart. The Basement Hall then leads to the Basement Corridor (地下廊下 Chika Rōka?), which houses a few pods, and finally to the Pod Room (ポッドルーム Poddo Rūmu?), where Sora slept while Naminé fixed his memories. Towards the end of the game Sora and party can access the simulation via DiZ's machine, but are limited access to only the Computer Room, and the Basement Hall. A Corridor of Darkness can by found in the latter area, which allows travel across the emptiness of Betwixt and Between (狭間の空間 Hazama no Kūkan?, lit. "In-between Space") to enter the Dark City and begin their assault on the Organization's stronghold.

The Empty Realm is an ominous white room where Naminé temporarily brings Roxas after his visit to Dive to the Heart. It's filled with oddly shaped boxes with varying lengths and sizes, most of them having their top portions resembling a crown. The room also seem to have no end and just goes on forever.

Mysterious Tower

As mentioned, Mysterious Tower is part of Twilight Town in Kingdom Hearts II, and is accessed by the magic train. The Tower itself is a surrealistic, crooked, golden-brown tower, loosely based on the setting of Fantasia's The Sorcerer's Apprentice. The Tower is topped with blue cone-shaped turret roofs, decorated with moons and stars, similar to Yen Sid's hat. It rests on a floating island that contains a courtyard with plenty of trees. Inside the main door is the Entryway, surrounded by an upward-spiraling staircase that leads to a strange portal. Through the portal, Sora and party are transported to the Wayward Stairs, a transitioning room where stairways connect the various rooms of the tower via portals. Other than the entrance, stairs, and upper floor, there are two known rooms in the middle of the Tower. One is the Moon Chamber, and the other is the Star Chamber. Both are perfectly round rooms, each with two doors leading either up or down the Tower, and are decorated with moons and stars, respectively. The final stairway is steep and straight, and leads to Yen Sid's study, the Sorcerer's Loft. The study is the largest room in the building, with several bookshelves, as well as three large star-shaped windows and a crescent one. A door to the right leads to the Wardrobe, where the Three Good Fairies, Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather, resides. Several covered mirrors are located there, each representing one of Sora's Drive Forms.

Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days

In Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days, Twilight Town is a lot smaller than it was in Kingdom Hearts II. The town's largest area is the Tram Common, loaded with buildings, streets, and two backyard type areas. Heading down south of the area leads to the Sandlot, location to several boss encounter. The bottom west point of the area takes Roxas up to the Side Street, where Hayner, Pence, and Olette's hangout is located, called Under the Tracks. Continuing up from Side Street leads to the Station Heights, a long street on an incline, with paths leading back down to both the Tram Common and the Sandlot. At top of Station Heights is the Station Plaza, home to the town's famous Clock Tower, where Roxas, Axel, and Xion often eat Sea-salt ice cream after missions. One of the entrances the town's tunnels, called Underground Passage, is located here. The underground connects to several areas from town, such as the Tram Common and the Side Street. At bottom of the area is passage leading a smaller location simply called Tunnel.

To the east of the Tram Common is a massive wall with a hole in it, from which The Woods can be accessed. Traversing through the forest takes Roxas up to a courtyard belonging to The Old Mansion, headquarters to DiZ, Naminé, and Riku.

In cutscenes, areas such as Pod Room, the Computer Room, and The White Room are scene. Also, during the fight against Xion, she'll drag Roxas across locations from other worlds, such as the Bizarre Room, Manor Ruins, and Lamp Chamber, before they end back up in the air above Station Plaza.

Kingdom Hearts III

'in Kingdom Hearts III, however, the hole has been sealed, with a new passageway by the Sandlot entrance called the Underground Conduit (地下水道 Chika Suidō?, lit. "Underground Waterway") connecting the two areas instead. 'In Kingdom Hearts III, Sora's party is limited to a single location called The Neighborhood (街の一角 Machi no Ikkaku?, lit. "Corner of Town"), which consists of the Tram Common, Underground Conduit, Woods, and Old Mansion. 'and a synthesis shop owned by Elmina the Moogle 'In Kingdom Hearts III, the Tram Common is populated with more people, greenery, and other signs of habitation; the armor shop has been replaced by Le Grand Bistrot, where Merlin can be found dining in the terrace out front, allowing access to the 100 Acre Wood; and the tram lot has been repurposed into an outdoor movie theater. 'In Kingdom Hearts III, the Sandlot entryway is closed off by a large door, while the entrance to Station Heights serves as an exit from the world, making these parts of the world inaccessible.

Worksheet: Hollow Bastion/Radiant Garden

The Rising Falls.

Sora and the rest of the party enter Hollow Bastion at the Rising Falls (逆巻く滝の底 Sakamaku Taki no Soko?, lit. "Bottom of the Reverse-Winding Waterfall"), appropriately named as there are waterfalls that run up instead of down. This area, as well as all other areas on the bottom reaches of the castle, contains magical bubbles that can transport the team under the solid water, or can be frozen to be used as platforms. Jumping on mystical floating rocks and ledges takes the party to the first of many magical platforms that are scattered throughout the castle. The platform takes Sora to the Castle Gates (正門 Seimon?, lit. "Main Gates"), the main entrance of Hollow Bastion which is made up of a set of balconies and lifts running outside the castle. From here, the party can travel down into the underground water system or enter the castle itself.

Going down the nearby platform or leaping off the edge of the balcony takes the party to Base Level (基部 Kibu?), an area full of ledges, switches, and enemies. Successfully climbing to the balcony near the entrance earns extra treasures, while taking a nearby bubble carries them to the Waterway (虚ろなる城:地下水路 Utsuronaru Shiro: Chika Suiro?, lit. "Hollow Castle: Underground Waterway"), where a series of gates, switches, and bubbles must be navigated to operate the castle gate controls. Off of the Waterway is a small room, the Dungeon (地下牢 Chika Rō?, lit. "Underground Dungeon").

The Entrance Hall.

Going through the doors at the other end of the Castle Gates area takes the party to the massive two-level Entrance Hall (虚ろなる城:エントランス Utsoronaru Shiro: Entoransu?, lit. "Hollow Castle: Entrance"), where a fight against Riku takes place. To continue onwards through the castle the puzzle at the end of the hall must be solved; solved, it allows access to the second half of the Castle Gates. Taking the left door in the Entrance Hall leads the party to Library (虚ろなる城:書庫 Utsuronaru Shiro: Shoko?, lit. "Hollow Castle: Archive"), also the site of a large puzzle involving organizing misplaced books. Belle, Yuffie, Leon and Aerith can later be found here after the Hollow Bastion Keyhole is locked.

Also accessible from the Library is the first of many entrances to the Lift Stop (トロッコ乗場 Torokko Noriba?, lit. "Minecart Boarding Place"), a junction point for the series of magical tram lines that snake throughout the castle. Each route is separated from the others by mystical barriers, and many passages and hallways also converge at this hub. The ceiling of the Lift Stop is decorated with stain glass.

The Castle Chapel.

Continuing up the castle by taking the lift on the other side of the Castle Gates area is the Great Crest (虚ろなる城:大紋壁 Utsuronaru Shiro: Daimon Kabe?, lit. "Hollow Castle: Great Crest Wall"), an enormous bas relief of the Heartless emblem, where the largest of the magic lifts is located. After a long and slow journey across the front of the bastion, the party is dropped on the other side, where they can take the Lift Stop to the next area, the High Tower (高楼 Kōrō?, lit. "Skyscraper"), where a smaller crest can be moved to create a way up to the upper levels of the castle. Through the Lift Stop at the opposite end of the High Tower is the entrance to the Castle Chapel (虚ろなる城:礼拝堂 Utsuronaru Shiro: Raihaidō?, lit. "Hollow Castle: Chapel"), where the exit to the next room is sealed until Maleficent is defeated. There is also a secret area, where the Dragon and Xemnas are fought.

Once the seal is broken, the party arrives in the Grand Hall (虚ろなる城:大広間 Utsuronaru Shiro: Ōhiroma?, lit. "Hollow Castle: Grand Hall"), where the Princesses of Heart are held captive and the Final Keyhole forms. Inside the Grand Hall is a Heartless Emblem-shaped portal leading to a small dimension known as the Dark Depths (闇の淵 Yami no Fuchi?). Here, Sora and company fight off the Behemoth guarding the Keyhole from being sealed.

Riku's Room is an area not available to Sora that is revealed during Riku's journey in Kingdom Hearts Chain of Memories.[?]

Kingdom Hearts II

Access to the castle is very limited in Kingdom Hearts II. During the second trip to the world, the way to the castle is unlocked and leads to the Postern (城通用口 Shiro Tsūyō Kuchi?), the site of a save point and the base entrance to the bastion itself. Going inside, the party must navigate the twisting Corridors (廊下 Rōka?) before reaching the end at Ansem's Study (アンセムの研究室 Ansemu no Kenkyūshitsu?, lit. "Ansem's Laboratory").

Despite promotional images and movies for Kingdom Hearts II that depict Sora, Donald, and Goofy in battle in the High Tower area of the castle as it appeared in Kingdom Hearts, the area is nonexistent in the game.

Ansem's study and computer

Ansem's Study was the private study of Ansem the Wise in Hollow Bastion. The room contains a throne and desk, containers filled with hearts, and books. As leader of Radiant Garden, he used it to store his research on the heart. Mickey Mouse and Ansem often talked in there. There is a portrait of Terra-Xehanort in the study, though it is unknown if Ansem or Terra-Xehanort put the painting up there. Behind the painting, it shows the password which are the Princesses of Heart. There is a secret passage in the wall that leads to Ansem's Computer.

Ansem's Computer is a complex computer system used by Ansem the Wise during his rule over Radiant Garden, and later used by his apprentices after his exile. It contains an elaborate network copied from ENCOM, containing the Space Paranoids world, which was updated and modified for research purposes.

The computer once held a vast variety of information regarding many subjects studied by Ansem and his apprentices, such as the Heartless, Nobodies, Organization XIII, and Ansem the Wise himself. However, when Sora, Donald, and Goofy tried to access the information on their enemies, they found that all of it was corrupted, possibly by Xemnas. The only thing that did come up was a picture file of the true Ansem the Wise, leading to the truth being revealed about Xehanort's Heartless.

The computer continues to be used by Xemnas to access the Chamber of Repose located several miles below the factory. While the password to Ansem's D.T.D. dataspace is the names of the Seven Princesses of Heart, Xemnas's password to access the Chamber of Repose is the original names of Ansem the Wise's six apprentices: Xehanort, Even, Braig, Dilan, Ienzo, and Aeleus. Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix It also allows access to the Heartless Manufactory on the floor below the room, and activates the laser that transports users to Space Paranoids. On the other side of the computer room is a small balcony overlooking the Heartless Manufactory.

Kingdom Hearts coded

Inside Riku's Data, the main hub of Hollow Bastion II.

In Kingdom Hearts coded Hollow Bastion I is very similar to the Hollow Bastion from Kingdom Hearts. Data-Sora starts his journey in the Castle Gates, he then goes to the Waterway as soon as he finds the gate is locked shut to find a way to unlock the gate. After opening the gate, he soon joins with Goofy at the Entrance Hall (LL) (エントランス(下部) Entoransu (Kabu)?, lit. "Entrance (Lower Level)"). After examining the Heartless slot on a door, Data-Sora and Goofy visit the library, which is broken down into Library 1 (書庫1 Shoko Ichi?, lit. "Archive 1"), Library 2 (書庫2 Shoko Ni?, lit. "Archive 2"), Library 3 (書庫3 Shoko San?, lit. "Archive 3") and Library 4 (書庫4 Shoko Yon?, lit. "Archive 4"), to search for the missing emblems. Data-Sora also chases after Donald in the Waterway. After the party is set, they travel to the Great Crest via a huge lift, leading to the High Tower. After obtaining the last emblem, they can finally chase after Pete who waits in the Grand Hall. Data-Sora encounters Pete and Data-Riku in the Keyhole, at the Chapel (鍵穴:礼拝堂 Kagiana: Raihaidō?, lit. "Keyhole: Chapel").

Hollow Bastion II is set within Data-Riku, who is lying comatose in the Grand Hall. From Inside Riku's Data (リク データ内部 Riku Dēta Naibu?), Data-Sora can enter five doors. The first takes him to Destiny Islands (デスティニーアイランド Desutinī Airando?). The second takes him to Traverse Town, divided into the First District (1番街 Ichiban Machi?) and Second District (2番街 Niban Machi?). The third takes him to Wonderland at the Clearing (中央広場 Chūō Hiroba?, lit. "Central Square"), leading to the Lotus Forest (ハスの森 Hasu no Mori?). The fourth takes him to Agrabah at the Cave / Hall of Beginnings (魔法の洞窟 始まりの間 Mahō no Dōkutsu Hajimari no Ma?), where he must travel backwards out to the Cave / Entrance (タイガーヘッド Taigā Heddo?, lit. "Tiger Head"). The final door takes him to Hollow Bastion's Chapel (礼拝堂 Raihaidō?) where he encounters the bugged Data-Riku. The side-scrolling segment takes place Inside Riku's Data, with the Dragon Maleficent encounter within the Chapel (Dragon's Lair) (礼拝堂(竜の間) Raihaidō (Ryū no Ma)?). Data-Sora also revisits the Grand Hall before the 3D shooting segment takes place in the Data Tunnel. Data-Sora defeats Sora's Heartless at Central Corruption (変異データ中枢 Hen'i Dēta Chūsū?, lit. "Central Data Mutation").

Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep

The Fountain Court of Radiant Garden.

The Central Square (中央広場 Chūō Hiroba?) is a square located in the middle of the world. Going northwest will take the protagonist to the Gardens (庭園 Teien?). Going east, the protagonist will find a flight of stairs leading to the Front Doors (正面扉口 Shōmen Tobira Kuchi?). Another flight of stairs going up will take the protagonist to Hollow Bastion. Back from the square, going east takes the protagonist to the Castle Town (住宅街 Jūtakugai?, lit. "Residential Area"). From here, the protagonist can access Merlin's House (マーリンの家 Mārin no Ie?).

Once the protagonist leaves the Castle Town, there is a path that will lead them to the Fountain Court (噴水広場 Funsui Hiroba?, lit. "Fountain Square"). The upper section (not the middle) of this place is the Aqueduct (水路 Suiro?), Radiant Garden's irrigation system. Past this place is the world's Reactor (動力炉 Dōryoku-ro?, lit. "Power Reactor").

The Central Square has another door, past two flights of stairs, one on either side, which will take the protagonist to the Entryway (エントランス Entoransu?, lit. "Entrance"). Past that are the Outer Gardens (城外庭園 Jōgai Teien?, lit. "Outer Castle Gardens"). There is a secret door in the middle of this place, which leads to the Purification Facility (浄化施設 Jōka Shisetsu?), which is situated below the gardens.

The Town

Radiant Garden Shops.

Sora first arrives in the Radiant Garden (still known as Hollow Bastion at the time) at the Marketplace (商店街 Shōten Machi?, lit. "Shopping District") which houses the world's Moogle shop, as well as Scrooge McDuck and the accessory, weapon, and items shops of his nephews Huey, Dewey, and Louie. Down the stairs past the item shop is the Borough (住宅街 Jūtakugai?, lit. "Residential Area"), a residential area where Merlin's House (マーリンの家 Mārin no Ie?) is located. It's also the Hollow Bastion Restoration Committee's base of operations and leads to the world 100 Acre Wood.

Continuing on, leads the Bailey (城壁広場 Jōheki Hiroba?, lit. "Castle Walls Square") which allows a look of Villain's Vale and access to the Restoration Site (建設中通路 Kensetsu-chū Tsūro?). After the events of the first journey to Space Paranoids, the layout of the Bailey is altered; the outer wall of the city has broken down, and the Castle Gate (城門前 Jōmon Mae?, lit. "Gate Before the Castle") can be accessed through the Bailey. The Restoration Site contains the equipment used to restore the city. It is also changed after the first visit to Space Paranoids, which allows access to two new treasures. At the end of the Restoration Site is the entrance to the castle, Hollow Bastion.

Outside of the Town

If the protagonist goes to the Castle Gate from the Bailey, there is an old gate similar to the one in Kingdom Hearts. From the Castle Gate, the protagonist will reach the long and winding Ravine Trail (谷間の道 Tanima no Michi?) that eventually leads to the Crystal Fissure (結晶の狭間 Kesshō no Hazama?, lit. "Crystal Interstice"), a small cave-like area with glowing crystals. This leads to The Great Maw (大渓谷 Dai Keikoku?, lit. "Great Valley"), a large area where the Battle of the 1000 Heartless is fought. The next and last area is the Dark Depths (闇の淵 Yami no Fuchi?), where Sora and his friends encounter Xemnas, Saïx, Axel, and Maleficent.

Villain's Vale
Villain's Vale.

The Bailey has a good view of the Villain's Vale (ヴィラン砦 Viran Toride?, lit. "Villain's Fort") which is an unreachable area in Kingdom Hearts II. Villain's Vale contains a room inside, also known as Villain's Vale (ヴィラン砦の一室 Viran Toride no Isshitsu?, lit. "Chamber of the Villain's Fort"), which acts as a base of operations for Maleficent and her forces of darkness. The Vale contains a small, ramshackle set of towers arranged in a castle configuration, rising from a pile of ruined masonry and machinery. After discovering that Maleficent had been defeated, Pete showed up here to see if it was true. He found an empty fortress, but was soon greeted by a resurrected Maleficent.

When Sora and co. first arrive in Hollow Bastion, at the base of the Vale is a swarm of Shadow Heartless. Leon and the rest of the Hollow Bastion Restoration Committee wish to restore the city, but first need to get rid of the Heartless. After the Battle of the 1000 Heartless, the base of the Vale is no longer surrounded by Heartless. The Heartless were amassed together by Maleficent and Pete for their army and then used to attack Hollow Bastion. The Heartless, however, sided with Organization XIII and did not finish attacking the city.

Villain's Vale appears in several flashbacks seen in Timeless River. As Maleficent treats Pete badly after his failure, the latter begins wishing he could return to the old days when he captained the Steamboat Willie. In response, the worlds gave Pete a doorway to his past to atone for his mistakes. He shows the door to Maleficent, who orders him to go to the past and destroy the Cornerstone of Light so that they may take control of Disney Castle in the present. After losing Hollow Bastion to the Hollow Bastion Restoration Committee, she deems the crumbling fortress unworthy, and begins searching for a new, grander castle in which to rule, setting her sights on both Disney Castle and the Castle That Never Was.
