The Wargoyle is a Dream Eater that appears in Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance. It serves as a boss for Riku and Sora in La Cité des Cloches.

Story[edit]

Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance[edit]

Frollo summons the Wargoyle to destroy a family harboring gypsies.

Riku is ambushed by the Wargoyle while searching for Claude Frollo in the Outskirts of La Cité des Cloches. The beast chases Riku to the Mill, where Riku finally finds Frollo, attempting to punish the inhabitants for harboring gypsies, and Phoebus, who tries to stop him. When the Wargoyle appears, Riku realizes that it was created from Frollo's darkness, but the insane judge claims that he was granted the beast as an agent of "righteous judgment" to destroy the gypsies forever. When Phoebus attempts to stop Frollo from leaving, the Wargoyle easily overpowers him and leaves the soldier badly injured. After Riku tracks Frollo to the top of Notre Dame, the judge summons the Wargoyle to eliminate him, but Riku defeats it after a grueling battle. The Wargoyle's wings shatter, and it falls into the fires below.

In Sora's version of the world, Sora attempts to follow Frollo when the judge pursues Quasimodo and Esmeralda into Notre Dame, but he is stopped by the now-wingless Wargoyle, who dives from the sky and demolishes the bonfire. Sora manages to defeat the rampaging Nightmare, then proceeds into the Notre Dame.

Later, as the Spellican fights Sora during his second visit to Traverse Town, it summons the Wargoyle to replace the Hockomonkey. The Wargoyle is in turn replaced by the Char Clawbster upon its demise.

Design[edit]

Like Barrett Wallace in Final Fantasy VII, the Wargoyle wields arm-mounted guns, and shares the Japanese name for bullet. Its English name is a portmanteau of the words "war" and "gargoyle".

Its body is mostly dark purple in color, with its ears and feet ending with a brighter purple. Its face is marked by a yellow jaw and red cheeks. Its gun arms are bright shades of blue with purple and yellow highlights, and they are wrapped in magenta chains. It has a whip-like tail of rainbow stripes, which ends in a semicircular blade that has a hollow section which forms a Hidden Mickey. It initially has wings that start off magenta that fade to cyan with yellow and cyan spikes and stained-glass membranes that alternate between red and violet, which shatter after its defeat at Riku's hands. The Nightmare Dream Eater sigil is on the front of colorful, belt-like bands around its waist.

Strategy[edit]

Side: Sora[edit]

The Wargoyle mainly attacks by punching Sora with its guns. Its other attack involves spinning around, attempting to hit Sora multiple times. Both of these attacks will occasionally cause Wargoyle to lose its balance and fall over, vulnerable to attacks. Beware though, as Wargoyle will recover with a fire pillar surrounding it, dealing damage if Sora is too close.

Wargoyle also attacks by swinging its twins guns together, and rains fireballs down from the sky. As the Nightmare's health dwindles, its attacks become more ferocious. Its pyro punch attack creates small pillars of flame in its general direction, and it will combine its pyro punch with its fire storm, making it hard to avoid. So long as Sora dodges the boss's attacks, and heals frequently, Wargoyle will be defeated.

Side: Riku[edit]

The Wargoyle can be a challenge due to its airborne mobility and its wide variety of moves. Although the boss remains in the air for the duration of the battle, Riku can circumvent this by leaping off the cathedral, thus allowing him to ride the updrafts created by the flames below. He can otherwise choose to stay on the rooftop of the cathedral in case he needs to rely on the support of his Dream Eater Spirits, who cannot warp near him and instead de-spawn while he's outside the rooftop. Wargoyle utilizes many fire-based attacks such as fire balls and fire enhanced physical attacks, such as punches and tail swings, all which can be blocked if on the ground or dodge easily with Air Slide. As soon as the battle starts, it wil fire large, diamond-shaped bullets at Riku. This attack can be avoided either by using Flowmotion to slide between the two pilars of the cathedral or by riding the updrafts in circles around Wargoyle.

Wargoyle can also light itself aflame and charge at Riku in midair. If he obtained Dark Barrier, Riku can block in midair too, but if not, he has to be on the ground to block. Otherwise, he can dodge it by air sliding. It also uses one variant of this attack in which it cloaks itself in darkness instead of fire. If the attack connects with Riku while he's gliding in the air, Wargoyle will grab Riku with its tail and throw him back onto the cathedral, dealing even more damage. This variant can be dodged or blocked in the same way, but will still throw Riku away even if blocked. Staying airbone and attacking him mainly with Sliding Crescent after avoiding one of his attacks is a good strategy, but his Dream Eaters cannot follow him in the midair area and may be temporarily unavailable until he reaches the ground and calls them back. Equipping a wide variety of long ranged commands is also useful.

If Riku deals enough consecutive damage, the Reality Shift prompt for Faithline may appear, along with floating orbs around the boss that can be linked with the beams of light that he can ride on. He may then perform a Sliding Dive to deal damage and stun Wargoyle.

When its HP is reduced to a certain point, Wargoyle will use a new attack where it unleashes a barrage of fireballs from its arm-mounted gatling guns. This attack can be avoided by taking cover behind one of the two columns on the cathedral. As long as Riku dodges Wargoyle's attacks and uses Reality Shifts when prompted, Wargoyle will fall with relative ease.
