Items (アイテム Aitemu?) are a recurring mechanic in the Kingdom Hearts series. They are used in battle, in item synthesis, and in story progression.

Battle items

Battle items (バトルアイテム Batoru Aitemu?) are consumable items that can be equipped to party members and used in the field. They typically restore a party member's HP or MP. In Kingdom Hearts, Kingdom Hearts II, Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days, and Kingdom Hearts III equipped battle items can be used by selecting the Items command in the Command Menu. In Kingdom Hearts II, 358/2 Days and Kingdom Hearts III, equipped items can be set to shortcuts for easy access.

Item slots

In Kingdom Hearts and Kingdom Hearts II, only a certain amount of battle items can be taken into combat at once, as each party member is restricted to the amount of item slots that they have. Each character begins with a certain amount of item slots, while Sora, Donald, and Goofy gain more by achieving bonuses.

Item cards

Main article: Item card

In Kingdom Hearts Chain of Memories, battle items take the form of item cards, as part of the card-based combat system. Instead of healing a character, item cards restore used attack and magic cards to their deck. Unlike most other card types, item cards cannot be reloaded once used.

Item commands

In Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep, Kingdom Hearts Re:coded, and Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance, battle items take the form of item commands, as part of the Deck Command combat system. Unlike other command types, item commands can be used a limited number of times, and they are equipped in limited quantities to a slot in the Command Deck; however, they do not have a cooldown period after each use. Item commands may restore a character's HP or other gauges, heal status effects, or activate Command Styles.

Synthesis items

Key items

See also: Category:Key items

Key items (キーアイテム Kī Aitemu?) are typically used to trigger scripted events or advance the story. They cannot be manually consumed or spent, although some key items are removed from the inventory after particular cutscenes or events.

Icon Material KH.png In Kingdom Hearts and Kingdom Hearts II, key items are symbolized by a purple orb icon, along with synthesis materials, and are listed in the "Stock" tab of the "Items" menu.

File:MiscRCO.png In Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep, Kingdom Hearts Re:coded, and Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance, key items have their own tab in the "Items" menu, represented by a unique icon.

Key items are not present in Kingdom Hearts Chain of Memories and Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days.

Other items

The following may also appear in the Items menu, but they can be considered separate categories:
