Origin[edit]

Miguel Rivera first appeared as the main protagonist of the Disney/Pixar film Coco, voiced by Anthony Gonzalez. Despite his family's generations-long ban in music, Miguel has a lingering interest in music, inspired by the late musician Ernesto de la Cruz. Believing himself to be descended from Ernesto after stumbling upon a family photo with someone holding a guitar resembling Ernesto's, Miguel tries to steal Ernesto's guitar from a mausoleum, but is cursed and transported into the Land of the Dead. To escape the Land of the Dead before fully succumbing to the curse, he must gain the blessing of an ancestor, so he sets off on a quest to gain Ernesto's blessing, learning more about his family.
