Twilight Town

Twilight Town is composed of two districts, Market Street and Sunset Terrace. The town is surrounded by The Woods (町はずれの森 Machihazure no Mori?, lit. "Forest on the Outskirts of Town"), a large forest that also hides DiZ's headquarters, the Old Mansion. The Woods can only be accessed through a crack in the walls of Tram Common in Kingdom Hearts II and 358/2 Days; in Kingdom Hearts III, however, the hole has been sealed, with a new passageway by the Sandlot entrance called the Underground Conduit (地下水道 Chika Suidō?, lit. "Underground Waterway") connecting the two areas instead.

Underneath the town is a vast Underground Concourse (地下連絡通路 Chika Renraku Tsūro?), localized as Underground Passage in Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days, which has several entrances in Market Street. One exit leads to the Tunnelway (トンネル Tonneru?, lit. "Tunnel"), retaining its original name of Tunnel in Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days, which in turn leads to Sunset Terrace.

In Kingdom Hearts III, Sora's party is limited to a single location called The Neighborhood (街の一角 Machi no Ikkaku?, lit. "Corner of Town"), which consists of the Tram Common, Underground Conduit, Woods, and Old Mansion.

Market Street

Concept art of Market Street.

Market Street (商店街 Shōten Machi?) is easily the largest area of Twilight Town, and is what is most commonly referred to as Twilight Town itself. Market Street is a long, winding, steeply-sloped road that leads from the lower areas of the city to Central Station. The upper portion of the street is known as Station Heights (駅前通り Ekimaedōri?, lit. "Station Road"). There are a few shops at Station Heights, including an item shop run by Wantz.

Central Station (セントラルステーション Sentoraru Sutēshon?) is a large train station that lies at the summit of Market Street, just past the Station Plaza. Its trains lead all over the world, including other districts of the city and the beach, and there is even a magic train that travels to the nearby world of Mysterious Tower. The Station Plaza (駅前広場 Ekimae Hiroba?) itself is a large, open terrace, presided over by the town's distinctive Clock Tower, which, though a twelve-hour clock, has "I" at the top instead of "XII".

The lower portion of Market Street is the Tram Common (トラム広場 Toramu Hiroba?, lit. "Tram Square"), an open-market area with a free tram circling around. Many shops are found here, including the Accessory Shop run by Jessie and Armor Shop run by Biggs, and a synthesis shop owned by Elmina the Moogle. In the Simulated Twilight Town, this is a candy shop instead. It appears to be the location of many homes as well. In Kingdom Hearts III, the Tram Common is populated with more people, greenery, and other signs of habitation; the armor shop has been replaced by Le Grand Bistrot, where Merlin can be found dining in the terrace out front, allowing access to the 100 Acre Wood; and the tram lot has been repurposed into an outdoor movie theater.

Both parts of Market Street connect to the Sandlot (空き地 Akichi?, lit. "Vacant Lot"), the area where the infamous Struggle battles take place, and to the Back Alley (路地裏 Rojiura?), localized as Side Street in Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days, and Hayner's gang's hideout, The Usual Spot (いつもの場所 Itsumo no Basho?), called Under the Tracks (高架下 Kōka-shita?, lit. "Underpass") in Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days. Roxas's Room (ロワサスの部屋 Rokusasu no Heya?) in the simulated Twilight Town lies above The Usual Spot. In Kingdom Hearts III, the Sandlot entryway is closed off by a large door, while the entrance to Station Heights serves as an exit from the world, making these parts of the world inaccessible.

Sunset Terrace

Another district of the town, Sunset Terrace (サンセット住宅街 Sansetto Jūtakugai?, lit. "Sunset Residential Area"), can be reached by taking the train at Central Station to Sunset Station (サンセットステーション Sansetto Sutēshon?). Connecting to Sunset Terrace is Sunset Hill (サンセットヒル Sansetto Hiru?), where Roxas spots the mysterious Ghost Train on the fifth day. Sunset Terrace is eventually joined to the Market Street areas through the Underground Concourse, which finally opens the last time Sora and his party visit Twilight Town.

Old Mansion

After leaving The Woods (町はずれの森 Machihazure no Mori?, lit. "Forest on the Outskirts of Town"), the player arrives at The Old Mansion (屋敷前 Yashikimae?, lit. "Mansion Anterior"), specifically the gate and the front courtyard. Upon entering the Foyer (ロビー Robī?, lit. "Lobby"), the Mansion splits off in three different directions. On the left side of the Foyer is the Dining Room (ダイニング Dainingu?, lit. "Dining"). Up the left set of stairs and through the door at the end of the hall is The White Room (白い部屋 Shiroi Heya?), while at the far end is the Library (書庫 Shoko?, lit. "Archive").

In the Library, there is a false floor that hides a staircase that goes down and leads to a door. Through that door is the Computer Room (コンピュータールーム Konpyūtā Rūmu?), where Ansem the Wise monitors the simulated Twilight Town. There is a machine that allows transport into the simulation. The doorway to the left of the computer leads to the Basement Hall (地下広間 Chika Hōru?). The Basement Hall then leads to the Basement Corridor (地下廊下 Chika Rōka?), and finally to the Pod Room (ポッドルーム Poddo Rūmu?).

In order to catch Roxas at the simulated Old Mansion, Axel creates a Corridor of Darkness from the Dark City that leads to the Basement Hall, but he never closes it. When Sora and his friends return to the simulated Twilight Town, they are able to go through the portal and travel across the emptiness of Betwixt and Between (狭間の空間 Hazama no Kūkan?, lit. "In-between Space") to enter the Dark City and begin their assault on the Organization's stronghold.

Mysterious Tower

Outside the Tower

In Kingdom Hearts II, the Tower resides in a secret area of Twilight Town, accessible only by a special train that only appears sometimes in the Central Station. The Countryside itself consists of several hills apparently floating amongst the clouds in the endless sunset of Twilight Town, with several stars gleaming in the background. Other than the hills and the tower itself, the only physical existence in the Countryside is a glowing railway along which the single train rides.

The Tower itself is a surrealistic, crooked, golden-brown tower, loosely based on the setting of Fantasia's The Sorcerer's Apprentice. Though it appears to be missing several key structures from the movie, such as the well and the basement study, it appears that the segment is canon to the Kingdom Hearts storyline, and this tower is where it takes place.

The Tower is topped with blue cone-shaped turret roofs, decorated with moons and stars, similar to Yen Sid's hat. It rests on a floating island that contains a courtyard and many trees that obscure the rest of the Countryside from view.

Inside the Tower

Inside the main door is the Entryway, surrounded by an upward-spiraling staircase that leads to a strange portal. Through the portal, a person is transported to the Wayward Stairs, a transitioning room where stairways connect the various rooms of the tower via portals.

Other than the entrance, stairs, and upper floor, there are two known rooms in the Tower. One is the Moon Chamber, and the other is the Star Chamber. Both are perfectly round rooms, each with two doors leading either up or down the Tower, and are decorated with moons and stars, respectively. The final stairway is steep and straight, and leads to Yen Sid's Study.

Yen Sid's study, the Sorcerer's Loft, is the largest room in the building, with several shelves containing many books, several about the exploits of King Mickey. There is a large wooden desk behind which Yen Sid sits, and behind it, large star and moon windows displaying the Countryside. A door on the side of the study gives way to the Wardrobe, where the Three Good Fairies, Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather, apparently stay. There is also a large wardrobe, and several covered mirrors that display Sora in his drive forms, including AntiForm and Final Form.

In Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep, the portals to the other rooms make no appearance and the Wardrobe Room is inaccessible.

Symphony of Sorcery

Main article: Symphony of Sorcery

A dream version of the Mysterious Tower appears as part of Symphony of Sorcery in Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance. The outside of the tower is simply called the Tower (不思議な塔 Fishigina Tō?, lit. "Mysterious Tower"). Inside lies the Tower Entrance (塔:エントランス Tō: Entoransu?), with a staircase leading to the Chamber (塔:魔法使いの部屋 Tō: Mahōtsukai no Heya?, lit. "Tower: Sorcerer's Chamber"). Inside the Chamber, various musical scores give access to other areas in Symphony of Sorcery.
