Nobody.pngEternal Nothingness XIIINobody.png This is absurd... Then I shall make you see... That your hopes are nothing—nothing but a mere illusion!
Book of Retribution KHD.png I first discovered the Kingdom Hearts series when I was 11 years old; my little sister had a softball game at the local park to go to, and my mother decided to drag me along. It promised to be a boring afternoon, for sure. At this point in my life, the only video games I played were from the Pokémon series. Sure enough, this was about to change.

At the park, I came across a boy who was a few years younger than me; he was holding a GameBoy Advance SP and talking to himself. I could overhear the boy using terms such as "Experience," "HP," and "Level," which I recognized from the Pokémon games. Since I was used to the other kids at school bringing their GameBoys to class so they could play Pokémon on them, I assumed the boy must be playing one of those games. "What are you playing?" I asked him despite this assumption. What I saw on the screen of his GameBoy when he turned to show me was something I had never seen before: a boy with a key-shaped sword was attacking monsters in worlds filled with, of all things, Disney characters!

I have always been a fan of the Disney movies and theme parks, so it was only natural that I wanted to try this strange, new game. The boy allowed me to play what turned out to be his copy of Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories; to this day, I remember that first stroll I ever took in the memory-based version of Olympus Coliseum in Castle Oblivion...

Unfortunately, the boy's mother soon came along and told him it was time to go home. I had to give him back his GameBoy; I did not let him leave until he told me the name of the game I had just played. He did not know the exact title off the top of his head, but his answer was "Kingdom of Hearts." With this in mind, I started thinking of ways I could get my own copy of the game.

Foudre KHD.png Getting to play Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories for the first time that day in the park led me into a frantic search for my own copy of the game. No matter where I looked, I never seemed to be able to find the elusive "Kingdom of Hearts." My luck changed, however, on my annual summer trip to Walt Disney World.

It was an incredibly hot day in mid-June or mid-July. My mother, little sister, and I were in Mickey's ToonTown Fair at the Magic Kingdom. In a fake circus tent that served as both a gift shop and character meet-and-greet location, I finally managed to find a copy of Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories while my family members waited in line to see the Disney Princesses. Excited to have finally found my prize, I rushed to my mother and begged her to buy the game for me. She refused at first, but I persuaded her to buy Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories on two conditions. The first, regrettably, was that I would get my picture taken with the Princesses. The second was that I would not play the game until I returned home at the end of my trip, since my mother did not want me spending it playing video games. After an unbearably long wait to get some painful photos taken, Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories was finally mine!

When my trip to Disney World came to an end, I immediately rushed up to my room and grabbed my GameBoy Advance SP and unopened copy of Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories. To say I was amazed with the game is an understatement; compared to the 2D and silent world of Pokémon I had grown so accustomed to over the years, I found the limited use of voice acting and 3D cutscenes in Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories to be beyond amazing. From that day forward, my GameBoy Advance SP was always in my hand; I remember being stuck for the longest time during my first-ever playthrough of Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories on the boss fights against Cloud, Larxene, the Riku Replica, and Axel. I could not believe it when I finally overcame these challenging battles and managed to beat the game!

I admit that when I first played Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories, I was not at all interested in the story of Sora or his friends. I simply had no idea who these characters were, how to pronounce their names, what their connections were to each other, et cetera. I was purely invested in Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories for its incorporation of Disney worlds and characters. That was all. It was not until I made an attempt to purchase the official strategy guide for Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories that I realized the reason for my lack of ability to understand Sora's tale was because Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories was actually a sequel...

It turns out I had accidentally purchased the strategy guide for Kingdom Hearts, which had been released for the PlayStation 2 (a video game system I did not have) some time before Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories. Rather than correct this mistake, I chose to keep the Kingdom Hearts strategy guide and marvel at the 3D renders of the characters that decorated its pages. With the new knowledge that there were more Kingdom Hearts games out there, given how much I adored playing Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories, I was determined to obtain them for myself. When it came time to write my list of items I wanted for Christmas, Kingdom Hearts, Kingdom Hearts II, and a PlayStation 2 were on it.

Lunatic KHD.png I was first made aware of the existence of Kingdom Hearts when I accidentally purchased the game's official strategy guide instead of the guide for Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories. On December 25, 2006, I received my own copy of Kingdom Hearts and a PlayStation 2; at last I could enjoy the prequel to Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories, the game that "started it all."

What blew me away about Kingdom Hearts from the first second I started playing it was the voice acting. Kingdom Hearts was the first game I ever played to have such a feature; up until then, every game I had played was dead-silent. I loved how many of the voice actors behind my favorite Disney characters returned to bring them to life once again in Kingdom Hearts.

I also found the 3D graphics in Kingdom Hearts to be very impressive; every game I had ever played before it featured low-quality sprites that moved around in a flat, two-dimensonal world. It was quite interesting to me to see my favorite Disney characters being brought to life in full 3D, as well.

Kingdom Hearts featured a wonderful soundtrack, its story was well-told, and overall, the game was quite fun to play. I found it difficult to navigate on some occasions due to the lack of an in-game map, and I also struggled a bit on a few of the boss battles on my first play-through, such as the fight against Ursula's second form, the final battle against Riku, and the second battle against Ansem, Seeker of Darkness. In the end, I beat Kingdom Hearts, and I'm sorry to say that in comparison to some of its sequels, as well as its prequel, Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep, it is actually one of my least-favorite games in the entire Kingdom Hearts series.

Nobody.pngEternal Nothingness XIIINobody.png So...it seems your hearts have led you to obliteration. Perhaps it doesn't pay to be too loyal to one's heart. I will have to be sure and remember that.
Interdiction KHD.png I learned about the existence of Kingdom Hearts II a few months before Christmas back in 2006; a former friend of mine often brought the game's official strategy guide to school and let me look at it after he learned that I was interested in the Kingdom Hearts series. All I remember thinking as I looked through the guide was how "different" the game seemed to be in comparison to Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories; the characters did not look the same way as I was used to seeing them. The new characters introduced in Kingdom Hearts II (particularly the members of Organization XIII) did not seem like they were "cartoon-y" enough to belong in a world as animated as Kingdom Hearts, which is ultimately a Disney game; they felt too dark and realistic. Despite my skepticism towards it and hesitance to play it due to its uniqueness, Kingdom Hearts II was still a game I wanted. Sure enough, I received it, Kingdom Hearts, and a PlayStation 2 for Christmas that year.

What I enjoyed most about my first few hours playing Kingdom Hearts II was how heavily connected it was to Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories. Exploring a 3D version of Twilight Town and hearing higher-quality versions of the instrumental pieces "Lazy Afternoons," "Sinister Sundown," and "The 13th Struggle" really made me feel nostalgic. I found Kingdom Hearts II to be much more fun to play than Kingdom Hearts was; I thought its story and soundtrack were both amazing, to say the least. While I felt Kingdom Hearts II was almost too easy on later playthroughs, I struggled quite a bit on my first against bosses such as the Groundshaker, Luxord, and Xemnas's final form. Despite the many frustrating defeats I suffered, finally clearing Kingdom Hearts II for the first time was such a rewarding experience. I remember very clearly running excitedly upstairs to my mother in a state of disbelief one night after dinner (my PlayStation 2 was kept in our basement at the time) to tell her I had just beaten the game. She seemed to be quite proud of me, despite not knowing just how much this achievement meant to me, having been the one who devoted so many hours to completing Sora's latest quest.

It really is hard for me to find anything wrong with Kingdom Hearts II; everything about it was excellent. It featured some of the best voice acting in the entire Kingdom Hearts series, and, as I mentioned earlier, it also had one of the best stories and soundtracks. I have literally done everything there is to do in Kingdom Hearts II; while being at level 99 and having the strength to overcome even the most difficult bosses makes the game a bit dull nowadays, I still find myself wishing, given their terrible quality across the board, that the more recent Kingdom Hearts games could all be more like Kingdom Hearts II. I feel that, with the exception of Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep, the franchise has really gone downhill in all its aspects since Kingdom Hearts II was released. To me, Square Enix will never be as successful with a video game sequel as it was with Kingdom Hearts II.

Nobody.pngEternal Nothingness XIIINobody.png You're such an idiot. There is no promise, and there never was! You're just delusional. Must you insist on playing the hero? Whatever. If that's the way you want it... You're going down alone!
Foudre KHD.png Shortly after the release of Kingdom Hearts II in America, Square Enix decided to remake the game; several new boss battles, weapons, abilities, and items were made available in what came to be known as Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix+. Included with Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix+ was Kingdom Hearts Re:Chain of Memories, a fully 3D remake of the first Kingdom Hearts game I ever played, complete with new features, as well. Sadly, both Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix and Kingdom Hearts Re:Chain of Memories were doomed to be Japan-exclusive.

I was desperate to obtain Kingdom Hearts Re:Chain of Memories. After months of watching gameplay on YouTube, I grew willing to import a Japanese PlayStation 2 and actually learn Japanese just so I could play it. For the life of me, I could not figure out why Square Enix did not wish to release what was certain to be a money-maker of a game overseas. My desire to play and possess Kingdom Hearts Re:Chain of Memories even haunted me in my dreams; as if it were God trying to send me a message that a localized version of the game was coming, I dreamt that I was playing through Sora's journey in the memory-based version of Agrabah in a version of Kingdom Hearts Re:Chain of Memories that was fully in English. Waking up from that dream and realizing its events were not real was beyond upsetting to me.

In early 2008, my luck changed. Square Enix announced that Kingdom Hearts Re:Chain of Memories was being localized after all and would be released in December of that year. My prayers had been answered! Using a $25.00 Best Buy gift card I had received from my grandfather and an additional $5.00 I earned for raking his yard in late November, 2008, I planned to finally purchase the game that I had wanted for so long. However, my mother decided that she would purchase Kingdom Hearts Re:Chain of Memories for me herself so I could save the money I had gathered for something else. While Kingdom Hearts Re:Chain of Memories was finally released in the United States on December 2, 2008, I had to wait an extra week to receive my copy; apparently, the game was completely sold out at Best Buy when my mother went to buy it for me.

The day that my copy of Kingdom Hearts Re:Chain of Memories was supposed to arrive, my mother returned from work and a supposed trip to Best Buy empty-handed. I was devastated. Later that afternoon, however, she called me downstairs to check the state of our dinner, which was cooking in the oven. Not realizing the device was actually off, I opened the oven's door to see Kingdom Hearts Re:Chain of Memories waiting for me. I could not believe how lucky I was to finally have the game! I rushed upstairs and threw Kingdom Hearts Re:Chain of Memories into my PlayStation 2; I played the game constantly whenever I had free time from then on. While playing, I was completely in awe; it felt like I was dreaming again to be playing an English version of the game that, for so long, was out of my grasp and had only been accessible to me in distant fashions such as YouTube.

Kingdom Hearts Re:Chain of Memories was amazing to me. I loved everything from the improved story and gameplay to the soundtrack. Obviously, the best part of the game was being able to play through an entirely 3D world. Kingdom Hearts Re:Chain of Memories was unnecessarily difficult, however (granted, the fact it was in 3D did make it a little easier than its original version); it is the only game in the Kingdom Hearts series I have had to play on Beginner Mode in order to beat. New boss fights, such as the one against Zexion, were quite enjoyable and epic, to say the least. The voice actors who had been chosen to voice Vexen, Lexaeus, Zexion, Marluxia, and Larxene took some getting used to; my one other major criticism of Kingdom Hearts Re:Chain of Memories aside from its difficulty was that the actors' words do not match the lip movements in the game's cutscenes. I really wish Square Enix had taken the time to re-animate the cutscenes for the localized version of the game; I suppose I can appreciate their desire to release it as soon as possible to please the fans who, like myself, had wanted it for so long. Kingdom Hearts Re:Chain of Memories was certainly an adventure I will never forget; while I got stuck on many of the game's important boss battles, one memory from my first-ever playthrough of the game I will never forget is how I finally managed to beat the Riku Replica for the final time in Sora's story only because of a glitch that prevented him from returning to his normal card deck after accessing his available enemy cards. The boss was left unable to attack, so I, being completely out of Cure cards and being in desperate need of them, thanked God for letting me proceed in the game as I gave the Riku Replica what-for.

Nobody.pngEternal Nothingness XIIINobody.png My show now, Keyblade master. Who am I? Oh, my name's Axel. Got it memorized?
Eternal Flames KHD.png Having beaten Kingdom Hearts, Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories, and Kingdom Hearts II, I was upset that there were no new Kingdom Hearts games coming out any time soon. I was in for a pleasant surprise, however, because on September 20, 2007, Square Enix announced that Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep, Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days, and Kingdom Hearts coded were in development. Kingdom Hearts II had made me a huge fan of Organization XIII, so I was naturally beyond excited to hear that Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days would focus solely on its members.

I followed the development of Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days closely; I watched gameplay videos and trailers for the game whenever Square Enix released them. Considering Kingdom Hearts, Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories, and Kingdom Hearts II had already been released by the time I became interested in the Kingdom Hearts series, Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days became the first video game whose release I had to anticipate all the way through the development phase. I wanted Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days quite badly; to this day, I remember being on vacation in Vermont with my family and having a dream one night that I was playing the game and traveling through Agrabah as Xigbar. The dream felt so real; I was terribly upset when I woke up and realized that the game would not be released for well over a year.

When Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days received the confirmed release date of September 29, 2009, I immediately marked my calendar and started begging my mother to buy me the game. The week before September 29, I remember waking up early every morning before school to watch leaked videos of the game's English cutscenes on KH13.com. I was quite impressed with the story that I saw unfolding, although I admit I was a bit disappointed in the game's voice acting. Jesse McCartney did not sound at all like he did in Kingdom Hearts II, and I felt that Xion, being a Kairi lookalike, should have been voiced by Hayden Panettiere. I was thrilled to see Christopher Lee return as DiZ, yet the replacement of Brittany Snow as Naminé with Meaghan Jette Martin saddened me quite a bit (my biggest pet peeve in video games and animated films or television programs is when voice actors are needlessly replaced). In the end, seeing every one of Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days's voiced cutscenes in advance made the last week of waiting before its release even more agonizing.

When September 29, 2009 finally arrived, I rushed home from school, finished my homework as quickly as I could, and tried to pass the time until my mother came home from work with my copy of Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days by working here on the Kingdom Hearts Wiki. I was greatly disappointed when my mother returned, for the game was nowhere in sight. I did not understand what was going on. Had my mother not promised me she would buy Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days for me and that I would get it on its day of release? Sure enough, my mother asked me about a half-hour later to recycle an empty bottle of milk for her, and when I walked out into the garage to do as she asked, I found a limited edition copy of Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days buried in the pile of empty cans and old newspapers in our recycle bin. This was typical of my mother; she loved to surprise me with the items I wanted most by hiding them from me in unexpected places so that I could discover them on my own after I started to feel frustrated that she had let me down by not keeping her promise to buy them for me.

With my copy of Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days in hand, I rushed upstairs and grabbed my Nintendo DS. As had been the case when I first played Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories, Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days was the first Nintendo DS game I had to be 3D and utilize voice acting. While getting to play as my favorite members of Organization XIII in Mission Mode was quite fun, I found that I was disappointed in Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days overall. The game's story was rather weak and felt quite forced to me, despite what I first thought of it; rather than close plot holes, it opened several new ones. There was an extreme lack of ability to customize characters; the fact that the game's panel system applies to every character in Mission Mode made it impossible for me to wield the weapons that I wanted at any given time. While I was impressed with the game's graphics and soundtrack, given that it was for the Nintendo DS, I could not shake the feeling that Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days was a game Tetsuya Nomura made just to make a little extra money. It really did not feel necessary to me; I did not find the game's story to be nearly as depressing as some of my fellow Kingdom Hearts lovers did.

Lastly, I personally despised the way Xion's name was pronounced. Until the first bits of English cutscenes from Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days were released online, I had been calling the Organization's mysterious fourteenth member "Zi-on." The official pronunciation, "Shee-own," just sounded strange to me, and not nearly as "cool" or "Kingdom Hearts-y."

Nobody.pngEternal Nothingness XIIINobody.png Oh, we do too have hearts! Don't be mad...
Arpeggio KHD.png During the early phases of the development of Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep, I was heavily opposed to the game's creation. Everything I saw concerning it was so alien to me in comparison to the rest of the Kingdom Hearts series, particularly the designs of the new characters, the worlds they visited, the monsters they fought, and the Keyblades they wielded. For the longest time, I had absolutely no idea when Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep was supposed to take place or how it was connected to the games I was more familiar with, such as Kingdom Hearts and Kingdom Hearts II. Even so, something about Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep must have intrigued me; after reaching the understanding that the game was to be a prequel to Kingdom Hearts, I followed the news of its development in its entirety and soon came to fall in love with all of the things about it that I had previously resented.

When Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep was released in Japan, I stayed up all night for three nights in a row during a weekend I had off from school to watch someone play through the game via livestream. As I watched the stories of Terra, Ventus, and Aqua unfold before me, I found myself awestruck. Never had I seen anything as epic as the events of Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep in Kingdom Hearts or any other franchise that I was interested in. From the moment the livestream of the Final Episode concluded, I knew that Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep was a game that I absolutely had to have.

For me, the wait for the English version of Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep was beyond agonizing. Only Japanese gameplay, subtitled cutscenes, and English trailers were accessible to quell my hunger for what I thought was the best game in the Kingdom Hearts series; I had a dream one night that I was playing the English version of Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep, and I found myself spending my days trying to figure out how I could get my hands on a PlayStation Portable. After several months, I finally found my answer. Seeing so many Final Fantasy characters in the Kingdom Hearts series made me curious about their games of origin. I was particularly interested in the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII, so I used my wits and decided to try playing Crisis Core -Final Fantasy VII- in order to get the PlayStation Portable I so desired for Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep. I received Crisis Core -Final Fantasy VII- and a PlayStation Portable on December 25, 2009. Now all I had to do was wait until September 10, 2010, the day Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep would finally be released in North America, as well as the day my mother promised she would buy me the game.

When I finally obtained my copy of Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep, it was a dream come true, even more than it had been to receive Kingdom Hearts Re:Chain of Memories back in 2008. Naturally, I loved everything about the game. The soundtrack was, by far, the best in the entire Kingdom Hearts series. The battle system was amazing and made fighting enemies entertaining; of course, the story was brilliant, to say the least. The only issue I really had with Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep was the casting of Willa Holland as Aqua. Considering Aqua is technically the main protagonist of Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep, I was disappointed that Square Enix chose someone with such a poor ability to emote as Holland to voice her. Overall, Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep is the one game in the Kingdom Hearts series for which I preferred the original, Japanese cast. If only Megumi Toyoguchi was bilingual...

Nobody.pngEternal Nothingness XIIINobody.png Cast away your useless fear. Open your heart. Embrace the darkness.
Skysplitter KHD.png For me, Kingdom Hearts Re:coded was the dawn of a new era in the Kingdom Hearts series, one that saw it decline from one of the best video game franchises in the world to one of the worst. While the game gave me a reason to play my Nintendo DS for the first time in a few years after I beat Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days, to this day, I do not understand why Square Enix decided to make it. After all, legend has it that Tetsuya Nomura was drunk when Kingdom Hearts Re:coded was first conceived. This showed all too well in the final result of Square Enix's labor. Even though I was glad overall to receive a version of Kingdom Hearts coded, which was originally a Japan-exclusive game for mobile phones, Kingdom Hearts Re:coded hardly stood up to games such as Kingdom Hearts II and Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep.

Kingdom Hearts Re:coded was the first Kingdom Hearts game I felt obligated to buy simply because it was part of the Kingdom Hearts series, rather than because it was a game I was dying to possess. Its story was insignificant and pointless; even so, I liked the idea of Kingdom Hearts Re:coded being a sequel of sorts to Kingdom Hearts II, for which I had been waiting years, and I enjoyed how it revealed the contents of Mickey's second letter to Sora. The gameplay in Kingdom Hearts Re:coded was disorganized across the board; it was more annoying than entertaining. For me, its only redeeming quality was its continued usage of the Deck Command system from Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep. The voice acting and music in Kingdom Hearts Re:coded were simply average in my opinion; unfortunately, the strain that was present in the aging Haley Joel Osment's voice whenever Sora spoke made my ears bleed.

I was relieved when I finally beat Kingdom Hearts Re:coded; I have not touched the game once since that day. In the end, the only thing this game did right was it set the stage for another Kingdom Hearts game that would hopefully be better and redeem Square Enix and the Kingdom Hearts series in my eyes...

Nobody.pngEternal Nothingness XIIINobody.png I'm sorry, but...I can't go with you. It's my friends—they need me. And I need them, too.
Kingdom Key KHD.png When Square Enix announced Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance, I was excited to see that it would be another sequel to Kingdom Hearts II, one that connected to Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep, allowed me to play as Riku again, and promised to feature the return of Ansem, Seeker of Darkness, Xemnas, and Master Xehanort. The gameplay shown in early trailers for Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance looked amazing; before Square Enix decided to focus on the game's development, the biggest mystery in the Kingdom Hearts fanbase was the significance of "3D" that Tetsuya Nomura promised. I personally thought it would stand for "Three Doors," referring to the Door to Light, Door to Darkness, and possibly a Door to Nothingness. I could not have been more wrong.

As the development of Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance progressed and I continued to follow the news concerning the game, I found my excitement for its release greatly reduced for numerous reasons. While I liked Sora and Riku's new outfits, I did not like or understand Riku's haircut. While I'm sure many people were overjoyed to hear that characters from The World Ends With You would be appearing in Traverse Town, I felt it was too late in the Kingdom Hearts series to make it a crossover with another game franchise. Seeing a world based on The Hunchback of Notre Dame made me quite pleased, but that was as far as my excitement concerning Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance went. I was disappointed to see that the Dream Eaters would be replacing the Heartless and Nobodies as the game's main enemies; to me, their ridiculous designs did not fit in the Kingdom Hearts universe at all, especially since its story had become so dark and serious. Unfortunately, it looked like Square Enix would be making another joke of a game, one that was only slightly better than Kingdom Hearts Re:coded.

Like with Kingdom Hearts Re:coded before it, Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance was a game I felt obligated to buy just because it was a part of the Kingdom Hearts series. There was just one problem; I needed a Nintendo 3DS. Luckily, I was able to persuade my mother to buy me one just in time for the release of Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance in North America; I purchased both the game and its required game system on July 31, 2012. I also got the Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance official strategy guide; I remember flipping through it in eager anticipation on the long car ride home from Best Buy. As I did with any Kingdom Hearts game I received, as soon as I got back to my house, I rushed upstairs to play it.

I beat Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance on August 4, 2012. Never had I beaten a Kingdom Hearts game so quickly. Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance was exactly the disappointment I thought it would be; many things contributed this opinion. For one thing, I was disappointed in the game's story, which had great potential but ended up being anticlimactic and completely destroyed the already-established storylines of previous Kingdom Hearts games due to several needless retcons. While I did enjoy the new interpretation of the battle system from Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep that Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance featured, I feel the Dream Eaters were not suitable allies in comparison to Disney characters, and I despised the game's reliance upon them as the only means of unlocking new abilities for Sora and Riku. I felt the worlds featured in Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance, with the exception of La Cité des Cloches and Symphony of Sorcery, were very boring and repetitive to travel around; considering the fact that Tetsuya Nomura had promised that Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance would feature all-new worlds, I was disappointed that so many of them utilized characters from ones that we had already seen, such as The Grid and Prankster's Paradise. I was absolutely blown away by the 3D graphics in Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance; this is one of the game's few redeeming qualities. Conversely, I absolutely hated the soundtrack of Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance. Considering the brilliance of Yoko Shimomura's previous work in Kingdom Hearts II and Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep, I felt that many of the pieces in Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance either sounded flat, too happy, or they were remixes of remixes, thus they were unoriginal. Overall, I could not stand how Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance did not take itself seriously; a perfect example of this is the tea party scene at the end of the game, which is completely random and unnecessary. For a game that is meant to lead into the much-anticipated Kingdom Hearts III, I really wish Square Enix had done a better job on it.

DaysLarxene.png
Nobody.pngEternal Nothingness XIIINobody.png I should tell you that I'm in an EXTREMELY foul mood. Thanks to you, all our plans are ruined!
Foudre KHD.png When I found out that Kingdom Hearts, Kingdom Hearts Re:Chain of Memories, and Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days were going to be rereleased for the PlayStation 3 in high definition, I was not all that excited. After all, I had already beaten the games' standard definition versions, and for all I knew, their remakes were just going to be the same games I had already played through, but with updated graphics. I was wrong. My opinion of Kingodm Hearts HD 1.5 ReMIX changed when I found out that instead of the original Kingdom Hearts, I would be receiving the once Japan-exclusive Kingdom Hearts Final Mix. At long last, I would have the chance to collect all of the new weapons and items, defeat all of the new enemies and bosses, and view all of the new cutscenes that, for the longest time, were originally only accessible to me via YouTube. I found the idea that Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days would be released as a movie instead of a game intriguing, but I was disappointed to see that Kingdom Hearts Re:Chain of Memories would not be receiving any major updates or improvements. Even so, I told my mother about the release of Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 ReMIX, and she immediately went on Amazon.com and preordered the game for me. All I had to do then was wait until September 10, 2013, the date my copy of the game was to come in the mail, as well as its release date.

As the months of anticipation slowly drifted by, all I could think about was a theory I had developed concerning Kingdom Hearts Final Mix, back when I never thought I would have a chance to play it. Simply stated, that theory was that following the release of Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days, Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep, and Kingdom Hearts coded, Square Enix would finally open its eyes to the amount of people who wanted to enjoy the new content added to the game and decide to release it worldwide. I was overjoyed to see that my theory was coming true.

When I finally received my copy of Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 ReMIX, I rushed up to my room and started to play it. I instantly fell in love with the re-orchestrated soundtrack featured in Kingdom Hearts Final Mix; I also found myself overwhelmed with nostalgia upon revisiting the story of Kingdom Hearts for the first time in months. Kingdom Hearts Final Mix was every bit as fun, exciting, and challenging as I thought it would be; I loved the game so much that I found it surpassed its original, PlayStation 2 version in many of the areas I once found to be weak. I managed to accomplish even more in Kingdom Hearts Final Mix than I ever managed to do in Kingdom Hearts; in particular, I finally was able to defeat Kurt Zisa and the Phantom, as well as synthesize the Ultima Weapon for Sora. It was obvious to me that Square Enix intended Kingdom Hearts Final Mix to be the highlight of Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 ReMIX; I could see the extra effort the company put into remastering the game, and I fully agreed that Kingdom Hearts Final Mix was deserving of such an upgrade as the one it received.

I loved seeing the story of Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days play out as a movie; while I had already seen the English version of the "game" in its entirety via leaked videos on YouTube, thus I skipped through most of the cutscenes in my own copy of Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 ReMIX that I had already seen, I found that the movie allowed me to obtain a new understanding of the story of Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days, as well as a new appreciation for it. I was delighted to see that the original game's entire cast returned to voice their respective characters; I was saddened, of course, to see the replacement of Christopher Lee as DiZ and Wayne Allwine as Mickey Mouse.

By far, I found the worst part of Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 ReMIX to be Kingdom Hearts Re:Chain of Memories. I feel that Square Enix was lazy when it decided to add the game in with Kingdom Hearts Final Mix and Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days; none of the issues I had with the game's original version had been fixed. Characters' lip movements still did not match what was being said, the game's soundtrack, save for one piece, was not remastered, and the game's graphics were actually made worse on some occasions. The only thing new that was added to Kingdom Hearts Re:Chain of Memories were some new cards inspired by the Keyblades obtainable in Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days; I was upset that these had replaced many of the obtainable cards featuring Keyblades from Kingdom Hearts II that appeared in the game's original version, and instead, I felt that these new cards should have only been added, rather than used as a substitute. As in Kingdom Hearts Final Mix, however, nostalgia served as my constant companion as I replayed Kingdom Hearts Re:Chain of Memories from beginning to end for the first time in years.

DaysLarxeneTalk.png
Nobody.pngEternal Nothingness XIIINobody.png You're such an idiot. There is no promise, and there never was! You're just delusional. Must you insist on playing the hero? Whatever. If that's the way you want it... You're going down alone!
Foudre KHD.png I was much more excited for Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 ReMIX than I was for Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 ReMIX, to say the least. This is mainly because it was to feature the HD versions of my two favorite games in the entire Kingdom Hearts series, Kingdom Hearts II and Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep. The fact that I would finally be able to play the Final Mix versions of these games after years of hoping and praying for their North American releases was an added bonus. While December 2, 2014 seemed like it was eons away when Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 ReMIX was first announced, my first semester at a new college that necessitated my moving away from home would keep me busy until then.

I remember very clearly that during the weeks approaching December 2, 2014, I asked my parents to order Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 ReMIX online for me via Amazon and have the game shipped to my school mailbox. I would then pick Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 ReMIX up and play it in my dorm room after classes concluded on the day of its release. Unfortunately, some problems with shipping ensued, and I did not receive my copy of Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 ReMIX until December 4, 2014. Even so, I did as planned and rushed to my mailbox in the campus's café as soon as my last class of the day concluded. To test the HD graphics on the TV in my dorm room, I started my Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 ReMIX adventure off by playing through the tutorials in Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep Final Mix. It felt odd to me playing the game on such a large screen (considering the original Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep was only for the PlayStation Portable), but I was blown away by the improved graphics. When the tutorials concluded and I selected Terra as the first character I would play as, I moved on to the true reason why I wanted Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 ReMIX, Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix. Not only was I anxious to re-experience the story of Kingdom Hearts II after eight years, but I was also dying to unlock the new features exclusive to Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix, such as the fights against the Lingering Will and the Absent Silhouettes, Limit Form, and new Keyblades, such as Two Become One. After years of envying Japanese players of Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix through what I saw of the game on YouTube, I was overjoyed to finally be able to experience it myself.

All in all, Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix was beyond amazing. The story of the game is one of the best in the entire Kingdom Hearts series, the game's remastered soundtrack was beyond epic to listen to, and the new features that were added to it made the game challenging; they also prevented it from ever being boring. I appreciated the nostalgia trip that was the HD rerelease of Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix; it was my rediscovery of this game that led me to fall in love with the Kingdom Hearts series all over again.

Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep Final Mix was slightly less enjoyable, however; I feel the game would really have benefited from a remastered soundtrack, the new features that were added to it were rather lackluster in comparison to the ones that debuted in Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix, and I did not find the story of Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep nearly as epic as the first time I experienced the game back in 2010. Again, however, the nostalgia playing through Terra, Ventus, and Aqua's scenarios from beginning to end again gave me was worth it.

I thought it was an interesting decision on Square Enix's part to add an HD movie derived from Kingdom Hearts Re:coded to Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 ReMIX; it at least managed to make the game seem on-par with the rest of the Kingdom Hearts series and really redeemed the original Kingdom Hearts Re:coded in my eyes. While I wish the movie had made use of the remastered tracks from both Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 ReMIX and Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 ReMIX, it really made me feel like giving Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance a second chance, as well.

I owe Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 ReMIX a lot; not only did playing it help me survive the end of my first semester at Rhode Island College, but it also helped to spark my interest in and love for Kingdom Hearts once again. I cannot thank Square Enix enough for releasing such a masterpiece.

Nobody.pngEternal Nothingness XIIINobody.png Soon the emptiness will shatter your heart—here in this world of nothingness! As lightless oblivion devours you, drown in the ever-blooming darkness!
Graceful Dahlia KHD.png Before I joined the Kingdom Hearts Wiki, I spent a majority of my time playing video games and watching television. I also drew and read a lot; I found myself on my own much of the time because, for whatever reason, I had trouble retaining friendships while growing up. I would find that I would share an interest with someone, yet after a few short months, the person in question would find other people to hang out with or start to find our common interest "boring," thus I would be abandoned. Eventually, I stopped trusting people, and I became very antisocial in my determination to prevent myself from being hurt by others ever again. I was also the victim of much bullying during my time in elementary, middle, and high school; this only complicated matters. For the longest time, all I had to turn to when I required aid, some cheering up, or just a means of getting my mind off of something were my interests and my family.

It was at the end of my time in middle school that I grew tired of being, overall, friendless. I was determined to completely change my personality and "begin my life anew," for I also wanted people to hang out with and talk to. Instead of being welcomed with open arms, however, I found that many of the people I saw on a daily basis wanted absolutely nothing to do with me. While I would try to start a conversation with the nearest person whenever I could, no one truly cared about being my friend, and the conversations I would have never lasted. I found myself growing even more introverted; I also became a very shy individual. I was prepared to spend the rest of my life friendless and alone, but then I discovered the Kingdom Hearts Wiki.

For several months after discovering it, I used the Wiki as a source of information whenever I needed help while playing through the Kingdom Hearts games in my possession; because my parents were ridiculously overprotective, I knew there was no way they would allow me to create an account on the Wiki and edit there. I grew jealous of the Kingdom Hearts Wiki and its contents; using a website building tool an acquaintance from school had shown me known as Wetpaint, I decided to try running a Kingdom Hearts website of my own. It did not take long, however, for me to grow bored of the website I had made, "The Kingdom Hearts Universe," and I eventually abandoned it in favor of trying to persuade my parents to allow me to join the Kingdom Hearts Wiki. On August 17, 2009, they finally agreed.
