Main symbols of boss enemies.

Bosses are common encounters in the Kingdom Hearts series. They are more difficult and often larger than the lesser enemies. Bosses usually have a significant role in the storyline, but others simply serve as challenges with little plot connection in some worlds. There are several types of bosses:

  • Mid-bosses - Bosses that are sometimes found in the middle of a world, and are usually Heartless, Nobodies, Unversed or Dream Eaters. An example of a mid-boss is Kurt Zisa.
  • World bosses - Bosses that are fought at the end of a world. An example of a world boss is Scar.
  • Final bosses - Bosses that are fought mostly near the end of a game, and are supposed to be the hardest boss fought in the game. Once the final boss has been defeated, the game is usually finished. An example of a final boss is Xemnas.
  • Optional bosses - Bosses that are most often found in RPGs. They exist in the game, but they do not need to be defeated for the player to beat the game. Sometimes, optional bosses are even harder to defeat than final bosses. An example is the Lingering Will.

Notes and references

  1. ^ Ansem, Seeker of Darkness appears to have characteristics of both Emblem and Pureblood Heartless, in both his human and world forms. In both forms, he carries the Heartless emblem on his chest, though in human form it could possibly be an article of clothing. Notably, though, the similar outfit worn by Master Xehanort does not possess the emblem. Furthermore, the shadowy symbiote attached to him in both forms possesses the "hollow heart" shared by many other Pureblood Heartless. Though it is uncertain what the situation of this Heartless is, it is possible that this makes him both an Emblem and Pureblood Heartless.
