Moana is a teenage girl from the fictional South Pacific island of Motonui, who grew up with her grandmother Tala's stories of her people's s legends and history, including the exploits of the demigod Maui and his theft of the Heart of Te Fiti. Moana is being trained by her father to become the next chief of the village, but her desire for adventure and special connection to the ocean, which she's had since she was an infant, often puts them at odds with one another, coming to a head when a blight strikes the island. After informing Moana of the seafaring roots of her people and giving her the Heart, Tala dies, telling Moana to find Maui and take him to restore the Heart of Te Fiti. Things go awry and Maui's hook is damaged in the battle, leading to him leaving and Moana to sulk in despair. At her lowest point, Moana is visited by Tala, who has been reborn as a Manta Ray spirit, who reminds Moana of who she is, giving Moana the confidence to take the Heart back herself. She confronts Te Ka and with the help of her chicken friend Hei Hei, as well as Maui, who's had a change of heart, Moana sails to Te Fiti. When there, she is unable to find where to restore the Heart, until she has a realization; Te Ka was the angry and wrathful manifestation of Te Fiti herself. She then begins to sing and call out to Te Ka, quelling her long enough to restore the Heart, and subsequently, Te Fiti as well. With Te Fiti restored, Maui apologizes and is given a new hook for his help with aiding the quest, and Moana returns to Motonui, now free from the blight, and is finally accepted by her dad for who she is and leads her people to a new age of exploration

Moana is informed by her grandmother that the story she was told about Maui and the Heart of the Ocean are the cause of the darkness, and that the ocean had chosen Moana to save it.

After informing Moana of the seafaring roots of her people and giving her the Heart, Tala dies, telling Moana to find Maui and take him to restore the Heart of Te Fiti. After taking off with a canoe, Moana braves the ocean until she finds Maui, who has been stranded on a small island since he stole the heart. Maui has lost his hook and reluctantly teams up with Moana to restore the Heart. After encountering many strange creatures and visiting the Realm of Monsters, Lalotai, Moana and Maui begin to bond with each other, helping the other overcome their obstacles, with Maui teaching Moana to voyage, and Moana aiding Maui in recapturing his full potential.

Maui, after regaining his power, sets off to battle Te Ka, the Lava monster guarding Te Fiti. With Te Fiti restored, Maui apologizes and is given a new hook for his help with aiding the quest, and Moana returns to Motonui, now free from the blight, and is finally accepted by her dad for who she is and leads her people to a new age of exploration Template:BoxTop
