The subject of Keychain is taken to a deeper role later in Birth by Sleep, where all of the Keyblade wielders possesses Keyblades without Keychain, with a notable exception of Master Xehanort. It should also be noted that all the Keyblades in the battlefield possesses no Keychains as well, with the exception of Kingdom Key, Way to the Dawn, and King Mickey's Keyblade
