Design

The Dream Eater's name contains the Japanese words for "box" ( hako?) and "monkey" ( saru?). His appearance is based on a mandrill. The version that Riku fight, however, is also reminiscent of a jester, as the long sleeves and the way the Hakozaru's fur looks evokes images of a magician or circus performer. Template:Section-stub

Strategy

Attacks

  • Long Punch (ロングパンチ Rongu Panchi?): The Hakozaru's hands form into boxing gloves, its arms stretching over a long distance to punch Sora.
  • Baboon Bash: A two-strike backhand attack.
  • Mandrill Mallet: The Hakozaru changes into a hammer and slams down on the battlefield. If the attack connects, The Hakozaru will trap Sora in its head and pummel him with its boxing gloves.
  • Box Bomb: The Hakozaru withdraws its arms, legs, and head inside the box and follows Sora for a short time, before exploding.
  • Upside-down Kick: The Hakozaru turns its body upside-down and performs an inverted kick.
  • Freeflow Charge: The Hakozaru jumps off a wall and performs a midair charge in Sora's direction.
  • Simian Slam: After taking enough damage, The Hakozaru slams the ground, sending itself and Sora inside the building, deals no damage.
  • Fireball: (Riku only) The Hakozaru tosses three fireballs at Riku.
  • Object Toss: (Riku only) The Hakozaru disperses into four disembodied hands which then grab objects in the room and toss them at Riku.
  • Claw Strike: (Riku only) The Hakozaru's hands swipe at Riku.

Sora's Battle

As the Hakozaru serves as the first boss of Sora's story, it is an easy opponent. The Hakozaru mainly attacks with a two-strike backhand attack. Its other attack involves turning its hands into boxing gloves and punching Sora which can be guarded against to avoid damage. It may also jump off a wall and charge at Sora in midair. The safest way to attack the Hakozaru is with freeflow attacks. When promted, Sora can use the Reality Shift Sling Shot, which will toss the Hakozaru and leave it stunned momentarily. As its HP dwindles, the Hakozaru will begin using a new attack where it transforms its body into a hammer and slams the battlefield. If the attack connects, the Hakozaru will trap Sora in its head and pummel him with its boxing gloves. If the attack misses, the Hakozaru will be stunned momentairly.

When its HP is reduced to a certain point, The Hakozaru will jump and slam the ground, sending Sora and itself into the building, though it is possible to defeat the boss before this happens. After enough damage, the Hakozaru will be defeated.

Riku's Battle

Riku's battle with the Hakozaru is slightly more difficult as the boss remains in midair for the entirety of the battle. The boss mainly attacks by tossing three fireballs at Riku. Midair and freeflow attacks are the best way to attack the Hakozaru. After enough damage the Hakozaru disperses into four disembodied hands which must be destroyed to force the Hakozaru to reform. Once it reforms, it will be stunned and vulnerable to either more attacks or a Reality Shift if prompted. After enough damage, the Hakozaru will be defeated. Template:Section-stub

Other appearances

Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance

The Hakozaru serves as a boss in Traverse Town, facing Sora and Riku in two separate forms. In the first visit to Traverse Town, Sora faces this boss after he confronts the Unknown on top of a skyscraper in the 4th District. The hooded figure summons this Dream Eater before vanishing. A floating, legless, long-range attack emphasizing version attacks Riku during his first visit to Traverse Town, but is defeated.

The Spellican summons the Hakozaru during Sora's first encounter with it in Traverse Town during his second visit, but is destroyed and replaced with the wingless Bullet Gargoyle.
