Re:Forum:Wiki Thoughts - Please Read

A few days ago, I sent TNE an essay I wrote on issues with the wiki, and I understand that she forwarded it to you. TNE was thinking of creating a forum akin to the one you just did, and that essay was going to be an integral part of what we were trying to do. I'm not too sure if I should post it there or not, and since it's your forum (and you've already read it), I'm asking for your approval or disapproval. KKD

If you feel you need to post it, then that would be fine with me. Actually, it was your essay and some conversations from TroisNyx that kind of inspired me to go forward my forum rant in the first place. Uh, Bluer posted that staff nominations and elections pretty much fall in the realm of bureaucrats now. Twice, actually, in the Staff Reorganization topic. Not because we want to take away any "powers", but because for the last six months, everyone's been spending way too much time discussing staff instead of editing the wiki or working on other stuff. Since you are leaving, we probably will promote someone to replace you, but that's a conversation he and I really need to have first. BebopKate 02:08, August 10, 2010 (UTC)

We had a huge conversation about it just now, and we had another massive one not two months ago. He and I think, much as we value the input and opinions of everyone, that much too much time has been spent on it. It's also part of the wiki being a wiki, I think. Some editors think there needs to be staff present all the time. The fact is we can't. We're not a massive wiki like FF Wiki. We have lives; you know this quite well. ^_^ Adding more editors just to "cover the bases" really isn't going to help anything. I think we just need to tighten our the skills of the current roster. Also, some people are going to have to learn to be patient and help us control the situation until we can get here. ^_- One other small concern is not in this case, but for the future. There is a chance someone would try push an election through just so they can have a shot at being a staff member. We're not trying to remain all-powerful, but we do want people to understand that being a staffer is nothing to be taken lightly, and is a position of responsibility, not superiority. It's certainly nothing you did, Kryten, if that's your concern. You've been very fair and reasonable in the situation, you handled the conversations well, and have made some great suggestions. I don't know if promoting me was one of your better ideas, though... ^_^ Seriously, if anyone has any issues with this decision, you may kindly point them to Bluer or myself.

We who were turned away by both light and dark - never given a choice? TALK - That may be... however, what other choice might we have had? Well, since you said anyone. It doesn't distract us any more than all the forums do. Even less so now that we've gotten to that actual voting. All users need to do is vote and be done with it. We do need more staff. From what I've seen, the only admin that really edits frequently is DTN. I know, real life, and I'm not belittling the admins that don't edit, and I don't expect them to be on all the time, but we still need active staff that will be on for longer than an hour or two a day. With all due respect, no matter how huge the discussion you and Bluerfn had was, two people shouldn't be the only ones to decide this.

TALK - In all honesty, when you look at the active staff, it's pretty bare bones. And without sounding full of myself, DTN and me did most of the "staff-only-can-do" work, and we're both much less active now. I think that, especially with BBS coming up, we need reliable staff that can monitor the recent additions, delete fake articles, move newly uploaded images, and in general battle "WikiKrakens". I understand that you and Blue are concerned about people spending time on the elections, but there's also the fact that right right now, there isn't much else to do - there is general cleanup, as there is at all times, but when BBS is released in English, we will be very hard up, and it will be difficult for the current staff to stay on top of the tide. I honestly think that this is the ideal time to get this out of the way, and prepare for "the storm ahead". I hope this makes sense, Jeeves

You and, to a lesser extent recently, Bluerfn are still a fair bit less active than say, DTN or KrytenKoro (though the latter will be inactive soon). Again, I totally understand why that is. Real life, work, whatever, and I don't have any problem with that, but the fact is that we're really going to need admins that have more free time very soon.

I do apologize for my recent inactivity. I have been incredibly busy this summer with marching band, camps, a lovely vacation, and regular IRC babysitting (which is no longer the case). I've got a life, you guys know that. But honestly, when Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days came out, I don't remember a copious amount of fake articles and vandalism. There were a few here and there, but nothing that someone cannot ping an active admin about to take out. Also remember than certain inactive admins are available very often by IRC, sepcifically Hexedmagica. I think I've seen Ultima there too. My courses begin again soon, and I will not be able to remain my previous "full activity." I can still do what I can, though, should not be a problem to contact me for administrative purposes. An admin is just as much an editor as any other user, the only deciding factor that can relate an admin's activity to a need for more admins is how easily they can be contacted, and how often they can check the wiki. I should still be able to receive my watchlist updates from my phone and be on my laptop every day to keep up with the notifications, so I see no problem there. I don't think we truly need this staff election. A smaller one for Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep I would have agreed with, but not the induction of 2+ new admins and several new moderators. Patience needs to be learned, what is wrong with the amount of current staff activity now? Is the wiki crumbling down? Is there mass vandalism that cannot be stopped by admins? Are fake articles and information pouring in? The answer to all of these questions is a big "no". Even with Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep, I do not think levels of vandalism and new editors will rise enough to require two new admins and several new mods. Heck, even just one new admin to replace the Grand Super Special Awesome King Administrator of Ridiculous Greatness would be enough, or promoting our two active mods up at the most. Look at the Final Fantasy Wiki. You know how many active admins they have? No more than five or so. We certainly do not need a full set of, eventually, 10+ admins active on a smaller, less active wiki.

Deleted images

I changed the images used in the articles to the standardized sprites that Shard had uploaded. I deleted most of the rips as "duplicated/superseded", but if you wanted to restore them and rename them to "X Detailed", like with the Champion Belt, that would make sense too. However, it looked really awkward for the weapon galleries to have 90% of the images in one style, with others in a different manner.Glorious CHAOS! 01:45, August 17, 2010 (UTC)

The others were slightly better quality images, though, since they gave a better look at the details of each...Premium Mushroom is a prime example. In the front image, you can see details such as the XIII emblem, where as in the sprite, you can barely make it out. I seriously doubt anyone really cares that much about how they appear in a gallery on what is basically an index page so long as they gave a better view of the item in question on the page of the actual item itself. Hi my name is GrandPyromania, and I am a Let's Player on youtube. Basically what a Let's Play is, is that it's a video walkthrough of a videogame, with the person's own commentary, to add instruction, and entertainment to the viewers. My current Let's Play is of Kingdom Hearts. I'm wondering if you guys would be interested in affiliating with me for the duration of this Let's Play, and any future Kingdom Hearts LPs. Basically what this affiliation would be, is that I would be able to use the resources that you guys have, such as information on bosses and heartless and whatnot, and you guys could promote me a little bit. And in return, I can tell people about your wikia, and every video description would say the title of your wikia, and a direct link to your wikia. Template:Fix

I was wondering if you are aware of the Fix template. This template, created two years ago and was declined by me and Hecko, is a work-all maintenance template that is able to combine our larger maintenance templates: the Cleanup, Expand, Images, References, Merge etc.. into one single template. Basically, by writing in the appropriate parameters, you can invoke the relevant categories without the larger templates.

As a maintenance nazi, I'm split. At one side, I would use the Fix template and start getting them to work into our articles. It can accurately point out which statement needs a cleanup or a citation. This will also reduce the need to use fair-use images as in our larger maintenance templates. But on the downside, the Fix template seems to be of minimal use; not fairly suitable for deletion, or merge notices, among things. Plus, there'll be no more of those cute character quotes as well as avatars that grace our larger maintenance templates. Surely we can use both of them, but that just makes things redundant. I would have invoke the cry "This isn't Wikipedia!" but it's not relevant in this wiki.

We had a discussion on this template on the discussion page. Try checking it out. Anyone who reads this are free to comment or act accordingly as well. I like the idea...at least for articles that have a lot to fix, causing us to have an influx of character bubbles that push the article down to somewhere near the Google ads. For one thing, not so much. It's not very attention grabbing. It doesn't scream, "I have put a big bubble here to remind you to get on this NOW!" Also, much as I know about the fair-use issue, those little bubbles are kind of endearing.

Perhaps there's some happy medium...maybe a template called "multifix", where you can choose the issues and it displays them all in one convenient bubble? A colorful, but iconless bubble to save space, but attract attention to the error of our ways? A bubble where all can see and despair...wait, sorry. That was something else. Hi I'm a Let's Player on youtube and a huge Kingdom Hearts fan. I know just about everything there is to know about Kingdom Hearts. I've already LPed KH1 and started to LP KH Re: Com but decided to reboot it soon. I have beaten every KH game released in the NA and Its easily my favorite video games series of all time. Hello, I am a Let's Player on Youtube in which I have become interested in becoming an affiliate with Kingdom Hearts Wiki. A Let's Play is basically a walk through with commentary, though not always. I plan on doing Kingdom Hearts for my next Let's Play and would like to become an affiliate with the community beforehand. I do play a lot of Kingdom Hearts myself. I do plan on 100%'ing the file. I have used the Wiki before but had only recently signed up. I don't know if wikia contacted you about it, but they wanted you and bluerfn to do traditional promotions for the KH wikia as soon as you guys were active again; they only agreed to take my suggestion of maggosh as a pro tem measure, and wanted the permanent promotions to be decided by the community remaining at wikia. ('course, if you guys were going to promote maggosh anyway, then 's already done).
