Vanitas appears as a boss in all three storylines in Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep. In Terra's storyline, he only fights Vanitas once along with Master Xehanort at the Keyblade Graveyard near the end of the story, but the battle stops halfway. In Ventus's storyline, he fights Vanitas three times: Two out of three of the fights are fought at the Keyblade Graveyard, the first with the assistance of Mickey Mouse, the second fight being the penultimate fight of the story, and the third fight being the final boss where Ventus fights Vanitas (with an incomplete X-Blade) in their Awakening. In Aqua's storyline, she fights Vanitas three times in the game: the first fight in Radiant Garden, the second fight in Neverland, and the last fight alongside Mickey Mouse in the Keyblade Graveyard, where Ventus/Vanitas wields the completed X-Blade.
Vanitas makes his debut and only appearance as a boss in Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep. Fought by Terra, Aqua, and Ventus, he is fought a total of seven times over the course of the entire game. While he only faces Terra as an aid to Master Xehanort during their final battle, he battles Ventus in hopes of making him stronger and with the goal of fusing with him in the end to create the X-Blade. Should Ventus fail to serve his purpose, he wishes to use Aqua as his "Plan B."
Strategy
Strategy
Terra
Terra's Scenario
Terra will fight both Master Xehanort and Vanitas two-on-one. Vanitas should be the primary target as Xehanort will mostly dodge and keep away from Terra. Vanitas will use his fire ball, lightning, Command Style-like, and regular physical attack here, as well as his typical shadow counter. However he isn't very difficult as after sustaining minor damage Vanitas will flee, leaving Terra to face Xehanort alone. Vanitas is the more hostile target as he will be attacking Terra much more often than Master Xehanort. If you wish to speed things along casting Magnet will stun Vanitas, putting him at Terra's mercy. But this is merely a warm up for Terra, and isn't difficult at all; although, it is advised not to take too much damage.
The only time Vanitas ever faces Terra in combat is during the final battle with Xehanort, double-teaming the young Keyblade wielder alongside his master. During this battle, Terra has access to D-Links, Shotlocks, and Command Styles. While clearing this boss fight without the use of these special powers and abilities is quite doable, it is recommended that the player instead make full use of them.

Ventus
It is very important that Terra immediately go on the offenseive at the start of the battle, as he now has two of Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleeps strongest bosses facing him at one time, the only instance in Terra's scenario where this is done. It is recommended that the player target Vanitas, the weaker of the two bosses, hammering him with physical attacks and magic, alike. Vanitas will mainly attempt to dodge the player's attacks, but certain abilities such as Chaos Rave will allow the player to stay on him. When Vanitas vanishes, Slide out of the way or fall victim to an attack in which the boss performs a downward strike with his Keyblade. When Vanitas sinks into the ground, only visible by a moving dark pool of darkness, immediately chain Slides together. Otherwise, Terra will be bombarded with fireballs as the boss re-emerges. Vanitas may leap into the air bombarding the player with dark lightning, or he even may shoot a single, large fireball that later splits into three homing ones. Slide can be used to dodge these attacks, as well.

Once enough HP has been depleted from Vanitas, the battle will automatically end, regardless of how much of it currently remains. So long as the player makes full use of their Shotlocks, Command Styles, and D-Links, healing with Curega or Sliding when necessary, this battle should not be that hard to complete. However, the player should remember that Master Xehanort is also present during the battle, and he may strike Terra with his Keyblade or shoot a long-range dark Blizzard spell in his direction. So long as the strategy used against Vanitas is carried out throughout the battle as the player attempts to defeat the dark enigma, Master Xehanort's presence in the battle will be irrelevant.
Ventus's Scenario
First Battle
First Battle
Vanitas has the same move set, stats and HP that he did with his first encounter with Aqua. He will perform his usual two-hit combo which can be avoided relatively easily or guarded, creating an opening for Ventus to land a full combo or a powerful attack. Vanitas has access to fire and thunder magic in this battle. For Fire magic, Vanitas will fire a large, slow moving orb of fire which then splits into three smaller and faster fire balls; this attack can be dodged easily. For thunder magic, Vanitas will leap up high and wave his keyblade, sending out a wide-ranged wave of blue lightning. This attack is considerably harder to dodge and is quite powerful. If Vanitas is struck a considerable amount of times during a combo he will disappear and leave an afterimage in his wake, he will then follow up with a powerful overhead slash. Vanitas will also use a command style like attack where he leaps upward and travels underground before leaping upward again, releasing a massive amount of fireballs. This attack can be avoided by waiting for his shadow, and at the last moment before he bursts out of the ground, dodging. The only way to keep hitting Vanitas without him countering is by casting a magnet spell, which will leave him at your mercy, even stunning him after the spell is finished. After he hits you enough times or you deal enough damage to Vanitas the battle will end and a cutscene will occur, then Mickey will join in for a second round.
Vanitas first fights Ventus in a two-part boss battle after luring him to the Keyblade Graveyard. The first will end only once enough HP has been depleted from Vanitas, the second beginning soon afterwards but granting the player the assistance of King Mickey. The player will also have access to Shotlocks, Command Styles, and D-Links, increasing the easiness of winning the battle along with Ventus's normal abilities.

In the second round you have Mickey as an ally, which allows you to use reaction commands to shield both of you from Vanitas's attacks and when Mickey prompts you to, go back to back with Mickey and unleash a Holy Burst attack where Mickey and Ventus spiral around firing light energy at Vanitas. This will cause decent damage to Vanitas, but the down side is that Mickey can also cause Vanitas to shadow counter but Vanitas will always appear above Ventus and attack him during this no matter how far away Ventus has gotten him. Unlike Aqua, Ventus will not have the ability to counter after guarding at this point, so Magnet is the only way to get off consistent damage without fear of him countering.
Vanitas at first challenges Ventus with a goal of testing his power. During the first part of the two-part battle, the player should go on the offensive while also following a hit-and-run strategy, using both physical and magical attacks in a balanced manner. Vanitas may disappear during the battle, but the player should immediately Dodge Roll or fall victim to his downward strike. The boss may also shoot a single, large fireball at the player that will soon separate into three smaller, homing fireballs after traveling forward in the player's direction. Dodge Roll again can be used to avoid this attack. If Vanitas leaps into the air, he may strike the player with a dark lightning attack, which has a relatively long range. Dodge Roll is recommended in terms of avoiding it. The boss lastly may perform a simple two-hit physical combo, an attack easily dodged with Dodge Roll. In terms of offensive tactics for the player, Detona-Square and Tornado are highly recommended for use, as they will deal great damage to the boss, also interrupting his attacks. Whatever physical attacks the player attempts should be the most powerful in Ventus's arsenal. Continuation to use powerful physical and magic attacks is the key to ending the first part of the two-part battle with ease and minimal damage.

Now that King Mickey has joined Ventus in his battle with his darkness, Vanitas's goal is to eliminate them both. His HP will be the same as what it was depleted to in the first part of the battle, Vanitas also using the same battle tactics. Ventus can follow the same strategies as in the last battle to defeat Vanitas this time. In terms of King Mickey fighting alongside the player, his physical attacks are strong, and the player needn't worry when his HP reaches 0. He will automatically revive himself in time. One major advantage to fighting with Mickey on the player's side is he'll grant the usage of a powerful offensive ability, Burst of Faith. Again, continue using the same strategies as the first part of the battle, and take advantage of the King's presence.
So long as the player heals when necessary, utilizes their most powerful abilities whenever possible, and acknowledges King Mickey's presence in battle, then Vanitas should not be a challenge to defeat.
Second Battle
Second Battle
Vanitas will open the battle by jumping onto a cloud of Keyblades and riding around the battle area pelting Ventus with ice blasts. He's very hard to hit while doing this but hitting him with a Thunder spell or Magnet spell will knock him to the ground and stun him ending the attack. Otherwise Ventus can continue to Dodge Roll away until Vanitas stops on his own. After riding the blades Vanitas will immediately do his Command Style attack where he homes in on Ventus underground. Again, avoid this by letting him reach you then immediately Dodge Rolling away from him. After this Vanitas will go into his usual repertoire of fire, thunder, and physical attacks for a time before calling the Keyblade cloud and starting the pattern again. Magnet stuns him as always and Ventus will have his own counterattack at this point so you can fight him like you would when using Aqua. The only thing to watch out for is that Ventus can only block from in front of him unlike Aqua's 360 degree Reflect, while Vanitas always does his shadow counter from behind so Dodge Rolling is the only way to avoid damage from it.
Ventus innitiates the second battle with the embodiment of his darkness, Vanitas previously attempting to eliminate Aqua after having ambushed her. His HP has not increased since the two-part battle, and Ventus no longer has King Mickey to aid him. By now, the player should not need his presence. The only thing the player need worry about would be the new attacks added to Vanitas's arsenal.

Vanitas will begin the battle by jumping onto a cloud of flying Keyblades. As he travels around the battlefield, he will cast dark Blizzard spells in Ventus's direction. These Blizzard spells have strong homing capabilities, but they can be dodged with relative ease. Vanitas also may sink into the ground once he dismounts the Keyblade storm, visible only as a mobile pool of darkness. Vanitas will travel to the player's location, so Dodge Roll to prevent being hit by several fireballs. Vanitas's other attacks are relatively the same as those he used in the first encounter with him, and they can be dodged the same way. As with the last battle, careful timing of Dodge Roll and a balanced use of physical and magic attacks are key to winning this battle. So long as the player heals when necessary and makes full use of Shotlocks, Command Styles, and D-Links, the battle should end with relative ease.
Third Battle
Third Battle
Vanitas battles Ven in their Awakening. He now wields the incomplete X-Blade and is much harder. He retains most of his moves along with variations and tactics and he only gains a small edition of HP. Among these variations are the color of his crescent waves of energy, which are now yellow-orange. Also, when he is struck a certain amount of times, he will leave behind a shadow of himself, but instead of a downward slash, Vanitas will initiate a spinning slash. Vanitas will also disappear and appear in front of Ventus airborne, and then initiate a series of slashes. There are three new moves in his moveset. The first is when he charges up the X-Blade to attack, which he uses very often. The charge up will cause fire being shot into the air, then Vanitas will perform a long-ranged slash, strike the ground to from an X shaped shockwave, perform another long-ranged slash and finally leap and fire an X-shaped wave. This is a set of very dangerous moves. However, if he is attacked while using this, the combo will be interrupted. The second is when he is shooting across the Awakening with the X-Blade held in front of him, which cannot be blocked. The best way is to just Dodge Roll away. The third is a definite movement and Vanitas will utilize it when he is reduced to 1 HP. Vanitas will rise up, charge up in darkness, and strike the Awakening, breaking it into fragments. It should be noticed that you take no damage, and that you should heal before this happens, because you won't get another chance to. Here, you will be using the Vanitas Dimension Link. This will allow you to use some of Vanitas's moves and changes your Shoot Lock to Dark of Link. Vanitas won't be defeated by attacking him, instead, the player has to charge the Command Gauge. The Command Gauge can be charged up by hitting him. Vanitas will only be able to perform three attacks. His first attack is Dark Splicer, where he teleports around Ventus performing a series of slashes. His second attack is Dark Spiral, where he shoots across the battlefield with the X-Blade held in front of him and his Shoot Lock: Dark Cannon, where he fires a large blue beam straight at Ventus. If the two utilize their Shoot Locks or use Dark Spiral at the same moment, a collision will occur. If that happens, follow the instruction on what to do and keep doing it until Vanitas falls back. This will fill the Command Gauge faster. When the Command Gauge is full, the special command Last Charge will appear. Activate it to defeat Vanitas, but this attack can miss, so be careful.
The final battle with Vanitas has come. He has entered Ventus's heart, fusing with him and creating an incomplete version of the X-Blade. This tremendous weapon has not only increased the strength of his attacks and changed those he can use, but his HP has also increased a great deal. Ventus has access to D-Links, Shotlocks, and Command styles during this battle, and the player should make full use of them.

Vanitas will first charge his weapon, surrounding it in a damaging aura. He will then proceed to lunge at the player. Dodge Roll can be used to avoid this attack. The boss also still favors the dark lightning attack, and he still has the ability to vanish and appear behind the player. Only the combo that occurs when this happens is different. Rather than performing a single, downward strike, Vanitas will slash the player multiple times. Vanitas also may begin to utilize an attack similar to Riku's Dark Aura, charging at Ventus at a fast pace multiple times, the X-Blade cloaking him in dark energy. Dodge Roll can be used to avoid this. While the player should continue to use a hit-and-run strategy, it is advised they use Tornado and Detona-Square to interrupt Vanitas's combos while still dealing great damage to him. Physical attacks should not be used as the main offense, as this will open the player to Vanitas's attacks. Instead, utilize magic or other long-ranged attacks to the fullest.

Aqua
It is impossible to fully deplete Vanitas's HP at this point. It will remain at 1, Vanitas shattering the pillar on which he and Ventus fight. Vanitas will then become a temporary D-Link, granting Ventus the attacks that are key to defeating him once and for all, ironically his attacks. As the two Keyblade wielders float in a dark realm amidst shards of stained glass, the player can move to Vanitas's location and hit him with Dark Sprial or Dark Splicer. However, it is recommended that the player merely use their Shotlock, Dark of Link. This will cause Vanitas to fire his own version of the attack, Dark Cannon, to counter. As the two beams of energy collide, the player must rapidly tap a button or spin the analog stick to win the grapple. This must be repeated several times before the combo finisher, Last Charge, can be activated. Once this is done, Ventus will surround Vanitas with three beams of crystallized light. He will then shatter them, defeating Vanitas once and for all.

So long as the player follows the correct strategies, makes full use of special abilities such as Comand Styles and heals when necessary, Vanitas should not be that much of a challenge. Once his defeated, the player will finally have cleared Ventus's scenario!
Aqua's Scenario
First Battle
First Battle
In Aqua's first battle Vanitas will go easy on her. He'll physically attack, launch a fireball that breaks into smaller fireballs, and leap into the air and rain lighting bolts. Vanitas also has an ability where after being hit a certain number of times he'll warp above Aqua leaving a shadow where he used to be, and does a leaping slash from above. Therefore getting off a full combo or Shoot Lock is difficult. If you wish to play it safe you can simply guard all his attacks and counter which will damage him without him being able to counter, or you can tough it out and trade blows with him, doing your best to avoid his counters. A weakness that can be exploited is that Vanitas can be affected by Magnet spells. Casting one on him will trap him in the air where he can attacked without fear of countering, and will also leave him stunned for a few moments after this, again allowing him to be attacked without the ability to counter.
Second Battle
Second Battle
Vanitas is no longer playing around with Aqua so he's more aggressive this round. In addition to his other moves that he'll carry over he has a new Command Style-like move where he glows red, dives under ground and homes in on Aqua before attacking directly under her. This can be avoided by letting him track you and then quickly Dodge Rolling away from the attack. However he'll still be glowing for awhile after this and while he is Vanitas will add another hit to his usual Keyblade combo that throws out a crescent wave of energy that does additional damage and can hit Aqua from long range. He has more health too but beyond this, its basically the same as the first battle. Guard and counter to play it safe or stun him with Magnet like before.
Third Battle
Third Battle
During the third battle, which takes place simultaneously with Ventus's final battle with Vanitas within their Awakening, in the physical realm, Vanitas will be possessing Ventus's body and wields the completed X-Blade. Also, Vanitas gains a large addition of HP. Mickey will assist Aqua during the battle. Vanitas's battle style is almost the same as the previous battles, albeit having new attacks and variations of his previous ones. Vanitas utilizes the same two-hit combo and releases a crescent wave of energy, though it will stay out for a longer period of time. Also, Vanitas will dive back into the ground after diving upward from the ground and repeat the process two more times, making the move harder to avoid. A new skill Vanitas utilizes is a thrusting move similar to Sonic Blade though he will zigzag around instead of constantly thrusting, which should be avoided by leaping around. If Vanitas is hit a certain amount of times, he will leave behind a shadow where he used to be and leaps above Aqua and performs a leaping slash from above creating large crystals through impact. This attack is more difficult to avoid since it now has a wider range. Another new technique that Vanitas utilizes is when he teleports to the middle of the battlefield and lands a hard blow on the ground creating four shockwaves.  This move should be avoided by performing a Shoot Lock or utilizing Holy Burst with Mickey.

Strategy

Terra's Scenario

The only time Vanitas ever faces Terra in combat is during the final battle with Xehanort, double-teaming the young Keyblade wielder alongside his master. During this battle, Terra has access to D-Links, Shotlocks, and Command Styles. While clearing this boss fight without the use of these special powers and abilities is quite doable, it is recommended that the player instead make full use of them.

It is very important that Terra immediately go on the offenseive at the start of the battle, as he now has two of Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep's strongest bosses facing him at one time, the only instance in Terra's scenario where this is done.

So long as the strategy used against Vanitas is carried out throughout the battle as the player attempts to defeat the dark enigma, Master Xehanort's presence in the battle will be irrelevant.

Ventus's Scenario

First Battle

Vanitas first fights Ventus in a two-part boss battle after luring him to the Keyblade Graveyard. The first will end only once enough HP has been depleted from Vanitas, the second beginning soon afterwards but granting the player the assistance of King Mickey. The player will also have access to Shotlocks, Command Styles, and D-Links, increasing the easiness of winning the battle along with Ventus's normal abilities.

Vanitas at first challenges Ventus with a goal of testing his power. During the first part of the two-part battle, the player should go on the offensive while also following a hit-and-run strategy, using both physical and magical attacks in a balanced manner. The final battle with Vanitas has come. He has entered Ventus's heart, fusing with him and creating an incomplete version of the X-Blade.
