The first volume of the Kingdom Hearts II manga was originally published in 2007 by Tokyopop. The series was later picked up by Yen Press not long after, releasing the first volume in 2013. The first volume of the Yen Press release details the complete story of Roxas, Sora's awakening, and the events at Beast's Castle. The first Tokyopop volume begins with Roxas's story and ends just after the completion of the Seven Wonders of Twilight Town.
Both publishers share the same front cover image: Roxas and a sleeping Sora floating before a scene similar to what occurs in Roxas's Dive to the Heart.

With the stolen pictures in hand Roxas returns to his friends, who conclude that the only pictures stolen were those of Roxas. As Roxas leaves for home, he passes out. Meanwhile, Axel searches for Roxas in town. After another sequence of mysterious dreams, Roxas wakes up back in his room. | ||||

After several failed attempts Roxas throws his makeshift Keyblade away, accidentally hitting a cloaked figure. The man silently walks away, prompting Roxas to awkwardly leave. The group decides to head to the beach, taking up random jobs around town to earn the required munny. As the group prepares to board the train, Roxas is knocked over by the cloaked figure from before. The man steals the group's munny and asks Roxas a question, much to the boy's confusion. Elsewhere, in a computer lab, DiZ comments on the quiet activity from the Organization. The next day, Roxas is on his way to the train station when time freezes. A girl in white appears, instructing Roxas to head to the Old Mansion. | ||||

| [[|125px|left]]With Keyblade in hand, Roxas fights his way through town. Suddenly, he is transported to an unknown location. A dark creature appears, preparing to swallow Roxas whole. The teen is saved by Naminé. As she beings to tell Roxas the truth, the cloaked thief from before sends her away. Roxas awakens back in the Sandlot with Seifer's gang, much to Hayner's frustration. After reuniting with his friends, Roxas and Hayner vow to win the Struggle tournament the next day. During the first round of finals, Seifer loses to Vivi. As Roxas goes to face Vivi, Seifer warns him to watch out. Elsewhere, the cloaked figure and Naminé discuss Sora's soon return. | ||||

Despite Axel's attempts, Roxas is unable to remember him. Axel prepares to fight Roxas, intent on taking the youth back by force. Axel reveals that Roxas is Organization XIII's thirteenth member- and a wielder of the Keyblade. Suddenly, DiZ interrupts, ordering Roxas to ignore Axel's comments. A shouting match then occurs between Axel and DiZ- the former trying to awaken Roxas's old memories, the latter reminding Roxas's promise with Hayner and the others. Roxas cries his friend's names out, only to be met with a rush of dreams involving Sora. | ||||

Just before the Struggle between Setzer and Roxas, Roxas spots a man in a black coat standing in the alley. The man shortly disappears, just as the match begins. Roxas defeats Setzer and is given a trophy for winning the tournament. As the group celebrates the victory atop the clock tower, Roxas accidentally slips and falls off the tower. Elsewhere, back at the Destiny Islands, Kairi and Selphie are walking home from school. Kairi reveals that she cannot remember the other boy who used to play with her and Riku. Kairi refuses to visit the island they used to play at until she remembers him. Kairi is struck with a headache and momentarily passes out. After a brief conversation with Roxas she wakes up and runs towards the beach. | ||||

| [[|125px|left]]Kairi recalls her conversation with Roxas and remembers the other boy's name: Sora. Kairi throws a bottle containing a letter into the ocean, stating that it is for Sora. Back in Twilight Town, Roxas wakes up in his bedroom. Unable to make sense of the previous day's events, Roxas continues to the Usual Spot. With three days of summer vacation left the group decides to do their term paper on the haunted Old Mansion. Seifer's gang has also decided to investigate the Old Mansion, prompting a scuffle between the two groups. During this scene Roxas passes out. Roxas awakens in a white room, where he also finds Naminé. Naminé introduces herself as a "witch" with powers over Sora's memories, including those around him. She continues, explaining that DiZ has been monitoring the town and Roxas, and that Sora has been sleeping for about a year now in order to regain his lost memories. She finishes, stating that Roxas was never supposed to exist. Roxas awakens back in front of the locked mansion and finds his friends dismissing the haunted rumors as myth. Elsewhere, DiZ orders his hooded companion to dispose of Naminé. | ||||
