Wording for describing interactions between mobility abilities and poles?[edit]
After some time doing in-game testing with KH3, it seems that not all mobility abilities are reacting the same when moving into a pole or column. Those that require pressing
/
while moving
do the following:
- Air Slide, Aerial Dodge, Sonic Step, Wall Kick and Superslide can always start Pole Spin/Swing
- Offensive Dodge will only start Pole Spin/Swing when used in the air
- Avatar Shift and Sliding Shot will always start Pole Spin/Swing if used to move forward with the left stick
More complicated behaviors occur for abilities that only require pressing
/
: Backslide, Offensive Backslide, and the backward versions of Avatar Shift and Sliding Shot
- They will only trigger Pole Spin/Swing if Sora moves into the pole or column with a non-normal angle (= not perpendicularly to the pole's local surface around Sora's location)
- If Sora uses these abilities while standing stationary on top of the pole or column, Pole Spin/Swing will immediately be activated.
- If moving into thin poles (branches, lampposts...) at a normal angle, Sora will bounce off using Wall Kick as if they were walls. Nothing will happen if Wall Kick is unequipped.
- If moving into thick columns (in Thebes for instance) at a normal angle, Backslide moves will not start Flowmotion at all.
This seems to happens consistently with both Pole Spin and Pole Swing.
How would it be best to describe all of this is in all relevant pages (Pole Spin, Pole Swing, Backslide, Offensive Backslide, etc.)?
For instance, I have a draft for Pole Swing as follows:
- In Kingdom Hearts III, Pole Spin is a mobility ability that costs 1 AP to equip. It is activated by using Air Slide, Aerial Dodge, Wall Kick, Superslide, Sliding Shot, Avatar Shift or Sonic Step to move forward into a vertical pole or column, or when using Offensive Dodge into a pole or column while in the air.
- Using Backslide or Offensive Backslide into the pole or column can only trigger Pole Spin if moving into the target at non-normal angles. Using these techniques to move perpendicularly into a thin pole will activate Wall Kick instead, and moving perpendicularly onto thick columns will not activate Flowmotion. This will also happen when using Sliding Shot or Avatar Shift to move backwards into a pole or column (if pressing
/
without tilting
).
Would this work?
