Throughout the Kingdom Hearts series, the player has access to many characters for their party. This includes playable characters, partners, Friend card, summons, D-Links, and temporary allies.

Sora

Sora is the main protagonist of the series. He has appeared in every Kingdom Hearts game to date, and was playable in all with the exception of Birth by Sleep.

• Kingdom Hearts: Sora is the only playable character in this game, with the exception of his his Heartless for a brief period.
• Kingdom Hearts Chain of Memories: Sora is the only playable character in the main story of this game.
• Kingdom Hearts II: Sora is the main playable character of this game, and one of four total playable characters.
• Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days: Sora is playable in this game's Mission Mode, after he is unlocked.
• Kingdom Hearts coded: Sora is the only playable character, in a data form, called Data-Sora.

Riku is one of the main protagonists of the series, and Sora's best friend. Throughout the series, he has been a playable character, party member, and temporary ally.

• Kingdom Hearts: Riku assists Sora in Monstro, during the first fight with Parasite Cage.
• Kingdom Hearts Chain of Memories: Riku is the only playable character in the Reverse/Rebirth story of Chain of Memories.
• Kingdom Hearts II: Riku is a party member in The World That Never Was, and temporarily playable during the final battle with Xemnas.
• Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days: Riku is an unlockable playable character in Mission Mode.
• Kingdom Hearts 3D: Riku is one of the two main playable characters in Kingdom Hearts 3D.
