''Kingdom Hearts: Reconnect'' is chronologically the third game in the ''Kingdom Hearts'' series; it takes place several years before ''Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep'' and was released exclusively on the Nintendo 3DS. The story of ''Kingdom Hearts: Reconnect'' focuses on the young Xehanort and Eraqus, whose respective journeys delve even further into the mysteries of the Keyblade War and set the stage for ''Kingdom Hearts III''. ''Kingdom Hearts: Reconnect'' promises to give players the chance to experience the powers of a true Keyblade Master for the first time ever.

*Depending on whose story the player selects at the beginning of ''Kingdom Hearts: Reconnect'', the game's story will depict either the rise of Eraqus or the fall of Xehanort.
*''Kingdom Hearts: Reconnect'' begins just after Young Xehanort returns to his proper place in time after the events of ''Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance''.
*A rough idea of the story:
**Xehanort longs to see other worlds. He opens the door in the Secret Place on the Destiny Islands, and he winds up in the Land of Departure (or a similar place), where he meets Eraqus. The two travel to several worlds together with their Master, Rain, and they come to see one another as brothers.
**Master Rain, a survivor from the Keyblade War, tells Eraqus secret information pertaining to the events of the great battle; this shakes Xehanort's trust in both Eraqus and his master, for he feels excluded by them.
***This secret information has to do with the "missing Masters," referring to Rain's friends (Ciel, Brand, and Linnea), who gave their lives to put an end to the Keyblade War. However, Xehanort misinterprets his master's words and believes the missing Masters are truly the Foretellers of legend.
**Xehanort and Eraqus are dubbed strong enough to venture to other worlds on their own by Master Rain. Xehanort is left vulnerable to the darkness and its many temptations.
**Eraqus uses the Keyblade to protect the worlds from the darkness, while Xehanort uses it to bring ruin and chaos to the worlds.
***Xehanort's Keyblade has been passed down for generations and is connected to the Foretellers of legend, particularly the unknown sixth Foreteller (later revealed to be Animus, the main antagonist of ''Kingdom Hearts Re:χ''), who had been denied a Book of Prophecies by his master and sought to exact his vengeance by destroying the world.
**Xehanort gains much knowledge on his journey and eventually discards his Keyblade Armor.
***This knowledge of Xehanort's includes the truth about his Keyblade, as well as how he is the sixth Foreteller of legend, "another" Xehanort with "no heart" who sought the world's destruction, reincarnated. Young Xehanort had renounced his purpose as the bringer of the end (and subsequent birth of new light) through the Recusant's Sigil, however, hence the name "Xehanort." Rather than destroy, Xehanort seeks to create (specifically a world in which light and darkness exist in equilibrium).
*The enlightened Xehanort tries at first to maintain his brotherhood with Eraqus, but Eraqus's devotion to the light makes him Xehanort's enemy. Xehanort embarks on several unauthorized quests to other worlds, on which he gains vast knowledge on the darkness and the Keyblade War; Eraqus is sent by Rain to stop him.
**Xehanort and Eraqus have a climatic final duel, from which Eraqus emerges victorious. He is pronounced a Keyblade Master and inherits the Land of Departure. Xehanort self-pronounces himself a Keyblade Master as well and continues to venture from world to world in pursuit of greater knowledge.

*Both Eraqus and Xehanort are playable.
*Gameplay is designed so that players may experience the full power of true Keyblade Masters for the first time ever.
*In the various worlds they visit, Eraqus and Xehanort are presented with many choices concerning the characters they meet and how they interact with their environment. Most of the time, the choices they make shape the gameplay experience and how the plot unfolds. One of the most important choices is "Light or Darkness? Eraqus or Xehanort?"
*Keyblade Armor and Keyblade Gliders return. Eraqus's armor matches that of the Armor of the Master, while Xehanort's matches that of No Heart. Eraqus's Keyblade Glider perhaps takes the shape of a horse, while Xehanort's is more like a jetpack.

Knowing their previous encounter was rushed due to the looming threat of the Door to Darkness, Mickey decides to get better-acquainted with Riku. Riku tells Mickey about how he had given in to the darkness, reminding Mickey of the Lost Worlds he had just voyaged across. Mickey is thankful he got to Riku in time before the boy, who Mickey senses should be one of the Keyblade's chosen, was lost forever to the shadows.
*Almost as soon as they meet up, Riku and Mickey are separated. Mickey searches desperately for Riku until he remembers the two now share a special connection. Even if he can't see the boy, Mickey knows Riku is still there and a part of him.

Mickey and Riku part ways once again. Worried for Riku, Mickey heads back to the dark realm to finish what he started in the Lost Worlds. He ''must'' find their Keyholes.
