Sonic Blade

Revision as of 20:00, 9 June 2015 by TheFifteenthMember (talk | contribs) (I do not know where to place this in the mechanics. How do we handle ability variations in the same game anyway?)
Sora using Sonic Blade in Traverse Town.

Sonic Blade (ソニックレイヴ Sonikku Reivu?, lit. "Sonic Rave"), translated as "Sonic Rave" in Kingdom Hearts II, is a technique introduced in Kingdom Hearts. It allows the user to execute a number of successive thrusting attacks. After the first attack, each successive attack is activated through a prompt command.

Mechanics

In Kingdom Hearts, selecting Sonic Blade from the last command box activates the first attack, and if it connects, the command box will change to Rave. Selecting Rave executes the next attack in the sequence. Rave appears five times, if all the attacks connect, and is then replaced with Blast, which executes the powerful finishing thrust. In the Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 ReMIX release of Kingdom Hearts Final Mix, the initial Sonic command, the Rave commands, and the Blast finisher are all implemented as Reaction Commands. Sonic Blade costs 3 AP to equip and 2 MP to use. Sora is invincible throughout the entire attack.

In Kingdom Hearts Re:Chain of Memories, Sonic Blade is slower than its appearances in other games. The enemies Sora strikes are knocked through the air, and therefore cannot use cards to interrupt the ability throughout the entire combo.

In Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories, Sonic Blade is an attack sleight. Starting with the first thrust, pressing   at the end of each thrust executes the next, for up to six additional attacks. Each thrust is naturally directed horizontally across the field, but it can be angled slightly up or down when executed. In Kingdom Hearts Re:Chain of Memories, thrusts have 360-degree freedom, and additional attacks are activated by pressing   when prompted. The timing is stricter than in the original Chain of Memories, and pressing   at the wrong time cancels the sleight. The card combination for Sonic Blade is:

  +   +   (20-23)
Three attack cards of differing types.

In Kingdom Hearts II, Sonic Rave is a limit that is exclusive to Genie. It costs 1 bar of the Summon Gauge to use. The limit begins with Sonic, in which Genie transforms into a giant hand that Sora uses to smack enemies several times. Afterwards, Rave transforms Genie into a rocket that propels itself into enemies.

In Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix, Sonic Rave is also an action ability that can be accessed from the Limit menu while in Limit Form. Selecting Sonic Blade from the Limit menu with   activates the first attack, and using the Rave Reaction Command executes the next attack in the sequence. Rave appears five times, and it is then replaced by the Finish Reaction command, which executes the final attack. It costs 60 MP to use.

In Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep, Sonic Blade is an Ultimate attack command that takes up one slot in the Command Deck, has a maximum level of 5, has a normal reload time of 15 seconds, and fills the Command Gauge by 20%.

In Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance, Sonic Blade is an attack command exclusive to Sora that uses two slots and has a reload time of 36 seconds. It grants +3 to Strength and +1 to Defense when attached to a Dream Eater recipe.
