Two translations?

Why are there two French translations? (One is "Slicer", one is "Sharp Edge".) The fact is, English "slicer" translates to "trancheuse" and "sharp edge" translates to "tranchant". Why do we need both there? Soxxeh 4:55am, December 29, 2010 (UTC)

Both are differently named, and thus have different French-to-English translations; thus they're both needed. I'm tellin' you this now before Ankou comes to get you. maggosh 05:04, December 29, 2010 (UTC)

Did someone call me ?

Just to clarify the matter, tranchant was used as the Japanese name (because I reckon the phonetic pronounciation for trancheuse would've been difficult to render in kana ; there's no specific kana for the French "eu" sound). Thus there are two names. The same goes for libéllule (JP) and démoiselle (EN), which can actually bring the same meaning. Démoiselle, on the other hand, has two meanings : one means "damsel(fly)", the other is the term for a young girl, which I see more often in literary French. Regarding all Knife pages

They have a French translation and some, like this one, have a second French translation of the Japanese name. Where should we put them? Do we put them both in the infobox, leave the English-French translation in the lead and the Japanese-French one in the infobox, or move them to the Design/Etymology section? Is a French translation of the Japanese name even necessary? We're the English Wiki, meaning our primary focus should be on English. While I don't find the additional information misleading/distracting or "cool," I don't think it really serves us a purpose...especially if we cannot apply this to the other knife articles. However, if we're against outright removing them...I'd say toss it into the infobox unless we can easily merge it into the etymology/design section. Xion4ever 23:25, 20 June 2015 (UTC)

But if we're removing nihongo templates from the lead, then the changes would apply across the board to all pages on the wiki.... no?

@Xion: We need a translation of the Japanese name, because it is French and not English and since we're the English Wiki, we need to put the English translation for it somewhere.

@TNE: We're only removing the nihongo templates from pages that have an infobox, since the Japanese names can be put in there.

I've added the translation to the Design sections, although it could use some improvement. For Dissonance, Eruption, and Indigo, I removed the translation, as it was the exact same as the name. TheSilentHero 17:51, 23 June 2015 (UTC)

The point isn't to get the name to English, though, it's to explain to the reader what the name means. Whether or not English and French share the spelling of those words, the intent is plainly the French word, and we should be informing the reader of that. Frankly, that's what all the etymology sections should be, instead of the context-less dictionary definition regurgitation that several of them are."We're werewolves, not swearwolves."
