::Per the argument I've put forth at Heartless, I don't believe the Ansem Reports can be taken as absolute truth. Both writers have known reputations for dishonesty. To an extent, a similar matter goes with Jiminy's Journal, as there is ample evidence within the journal that he is explaining the information he has, and that it may not be right. (See the changing articles on Riku/Ansem in KH2 for an example) I would suggest that if we cover any "Pre-game" stuff here, that it is either straight from Nomura or from cutscenes, and that anything that we have to take on a character's say-so is explicitly explained to be unconfirmed.<small>Glorious</small> <small>CHAOS!</small> 20:47, October 30, 2009 (UTC)

So, for KH, we would need to pinpoint first the shown event which is the furthest down in the past, as far as I know that would either be Eraqus and Master Xehanort discussing the Keyblade War or when MX forced Ventus against the neoshadows, or have we an actual shown event before it? After that we'd need the most recent event, which is most likely the scene with Sora on the papou tree holding Mickey's letter and deciding to go out rescuing the others.

User: Xhemel----As a long time player since I was 4 and got my hands on the original Kingdom Hearts I have been with the series since, we can all agree the story can be confusing, and most importantly the insane ability for Donald to heal. That one over played joke aside if you are new to the series I recommend just starting from the order that the games originally released in. I think it would turn off a lot of new players trying to enter the community if we tell them to start with Union Cross since that's the true origin or even Birth by Sleep. Start with Kingdom Hearts 1, then Chained Memories, then Kingdom Hearts 2, that will make the story flow so much better without jumping from past to present all the time like in the technical "spin offs". The next true installment I would recommend is Birth by Sleep or 365/2 Days, both are worth playing and are both canon to the main story. Re:coded can be skipped in my opinion, the gameplay was lack luster and the story is a bunch of fluff and really unnecessary to the point where I don't even see it as canon. After birth by sleep and 365/2 you can jump right into Dream Drop Distance which are the events right after KH2 and will lead you to KH2.9 aka Birth by Sleep 0.2 and that into KH3.
That is just the order that would be the most fun and would make the most sense to me. Doesn't make sense to try and explain the entire story to a new player (First of all if your confused and haven't attempted to play the games that's on you) or to try the games in a different order as you WILL run into spoilers even if you think you haven't.
This is easier than ever with the collections of all the games coming out for PlayStation 4 which will save you a lot of money and time and they include the final mix versions which in my opinion makes late game in KH1 and 2 amazing.
(I didn't mention Union X or X or whatever that BS is, because it really doesn't relate to the main story at all until much later and you'll waste hours of your life going thru over 1000 lvls for 2 pieces of plot information :/ ) I recommend watching the movie that comes with 0.2 instead as you don't really need any more info to enjoy to plot
Hope this helps, just found this forum and I was bored so I figured I'd give my input on the order of the games to someone that has never touched the series. :)70.92.4.188

Potential Dating System Substitute
One of the main reasons the timeline on this talk page seems messy and cluttered (to me, at least) is because it lacks an obvious indicator of when any particular event takes place relative to other events (other than those directly preceding and following it). Translation: It needs dates.
It sounds simple in theory, but the reality is far from it. We have no way of knowing how much time our heroes spend in any given World, and even if we did, Riku and Joshua's discussion in Dream Drop Distance indicates it wouldn't matter anyway; time flows differently in every World. Furthermore, concrete measures of time are rarely used with much specificity by characters nor in Reports, aside from Roxas's conveniently labeled year of existence. All this makes everything sort of difficult to measure (and don't even get me started on Xehanort's time travel shenanigans), but I think I've come up with a potential solution, or at least the beginnings of one.
The idea actually came to me while re-watching Blank Points. I suggest we separate the current timeline into three sections, or eras: 0, 1, and 2. Each would use the beginning of its corresponding game (Birth by Sleep, KH1, and KH2) as the beginning of its own dating system, and would continue through subsequent games and events until reaching the start of the next era. Thus, we would have Era 0 lasting from Sora's birth all the way through to Sora, Riku, and Kairi starting work on their raft. We could then further separate this era into up to 10 (or potentially more if it proves necessary) sub-eras based on related events. We could then number the events that occur in each sub-era in sequence. The same formula could be applied to eras 1, 2, and potentially 3 as well. Here's a bare-bones example timeline I've come up with.
Era 0
:0.0.00 Sora is born. Master Xehanort takes Ventus to the Destiny Islands. Sora's new heart joins with Ventus's fractured one, restoring it.
:0.0.01 Master Xehanort brings Ventus to the Land of Departure.
:0.0.02 Terra, Ventus, and Aqua grow up together and become inseparable. Aqua begins crafting the Wayfinders.
:0.0.03 There is a meteor shower the night before Terra and Aqua' Mark of Mastery exam. Aqua presents her friends with the Wayfinders.
:0.0.04 Eraqus names Aqua a Keyblade Master, but Terra does not pass his Mark of Mastery due to interference from Master Xehanort. Ventus and Vanitas meet. Master Yen Sid warns of monsters called Unversed threatening the Worlds. Master Xehanort is nowhere to be found. Terra, Ventus, and Aqua begin their adventures.
:0.1.01 Xehanort arrives in the Enchanted Dominion. He teaches Maleficent about the Seven Princesses of Heart and of the existence of other Worlds.
:0.1.02 Terra arrives in the Enchanted Dominion seeking Master Xehanort. Maleficent ends up using him to steal Princess Aurora's heart.
:0.1.03 Terra arrives in the Dwarf Woodlands.
And so on. Anything taking place before Sora's birth could either be classified as simply "Pre-0" and not use the era system, or it could be the Negative Era or something, and labeled with negative numbers.
The idea is that since the majority of the series doesn't bother specifying the time periods between different events, we shouldn't either. Note that I do think time periods should be noted where they are given. It's just that they're given so sparingly it's impossible to base a chronology off of that.
Anyway, to finish us off, here's how I would see the general layout of eras and sub-eras going if this idea were to take hold, excluding the Pre-0/Negative Era.
Era 0 (Birth by Sleep)
:0.0 Sora's birth through Aqua's departure from the Land of Departure
:0.1 Xehanort's arrival in the Enchanted Dominion through Aqua's departure from the Enchanted Dominion
:0.2 Terra's arrival at the Mysterious Tower through Ventus's departure from Radiant Garden
:0.3 Terra's arrival in Disney Town through Aqua's departure from Never Land
:0.4 Ventus's arrival at the Mysterious Tower through Aqua's arrival in the Realm of Darkness
:0.5 Ansem the Wise's initial heart experiments through King Mickey's departure from Disney Castle (Note: This sub-era covers about a decade of events, but the vast majority of these events are not directly witnessed by us, the players. This sub-era has the potential to span across more sub-eras should additional information arise)
Era 1 (Kingdom Hearts, Chain of Memories, 358/2 Days)
:1.0 Sora's Awakening through his first departure from Traverse Town
:1.1 Sora's arrival in Wonderland through his second departure from Traverse Town
:1.2 Sora's arrival in Agrabah through his transformation into a Heartless
:1.3 Roxas's 1st day through the locking of Ansem's Door to Darkness
:1.4 Roxas's 20th day (roughly) through his 49th day (Note: Includes the entirety of Chain of Memories. Could possibly span two sub-eras.)
:1.5 Roxas's 50th day through his 148th day
:1.6 Roxas's 149th day through his 254th day
:1.7 Roxas's 255th day through his 351st day
:1.8 Roxas's 352nd day through his placement in the Simulated Twilight Town
Era 2 (Kingdom Hearts II, Coded, Dream Drop Distance)
:2.0 The first day of Roxas's simulated "summer vacation" through Sora's departure from Hollow Bastion
:2.1 Sora's arrival in the Land of Dragons through his departure from Pride Land
:2.2 Sora's return to Twilight Town through his escape from Hollow Bastion
:2.3 Sora's return Land of Dragons through his second departure from Pride Land
:2.4 Sora's fourth arrival in Hollow Bastion through Axel's sacrifice in Betwixt and Between
:2.5 Sora's arrival at the World That Never Was through his return to the Destiny Islands
:2.6 Jiminy's discovery of the mysterious message in his journal through Sora and Riku's departure from the Destiny Islands (Note: Contains all of Coded.)
:2.7 Sora and Riku's arrival at the Mysterious Tower through their departure from the Symphony of Sound
:2.8 Sora and Riku's arrival at the World That Never Was through Kairi's arrival at the Mysterious Tower
Era 3 (Kingdom Hearts III)
Something like that anyway. The system is in no way perfect, but it's an idea. Thoughts? Fabala011 (talk) 20:00, 2 August 2012 (UTC)
:I think this is actually a really good idea. What I also like to see is which events occurs in which game, meaning there could be a colored heart (or something like that) before the number that indicates the game, like it's done with the game template. But what about events we were only told about (King Mickey's adventures in the Realm of Darkness, the first Keyblade War etc.), when we have such a concrete timeline it may be difficult to insert these events. --ShardofTruth (talk) 20:32, 2 August 2012 (UTC)
::A few comments:
*I don't think we should actually call these "Era X" in the headers, since we could raise up a hullabaloo similar to the somebody fuss. Instead, The headers should probably state some important, definitive event, probably the ones that start off each game; "The eve of Terra and Aqua's Mark of Mastery exam", "The morning Sora undergoes his Dive to the Heart", "Roxas's birth", "Sora's reawakening".
*On a very banal note, I'm going to say we have to assume that the events in each world generally take a day or two, if only because we usually don't see the sun rising or setting during a world's episode. When we do, we can obviously adjust that. Furthermore, there's not much hint that each journey lasts more than about a month, so I don't think we should assume the Lanes Between take too much time either. In regards to Riku and Joshua's discussion, if that's the one at the beginning, isn't he just implying that the Sleeping Worlds can have copies within a visitor's dreams?
*Most of the prologue stuff is actually fairly well nailed down, if we just work systematically. Ventus's fracture would have to be fourteen years before KH1, for example, while Maleficent attacking Radiant Garden would be one year after the start of BbS (nine years before KH1).
::I definitely like this idea, though. For sub-headers, I think just indented the bullets would work, though I think we can come up with a system to provide approximate dates for the events, especially with the help of the Ultimanias and the official timeline that was printed somewhere (I think Neumannz posted a link). If we need to denote explicit dates from assumed, we can.192.249.47.177 21:09, 2 August 2012 (UTC)
:::*Ah, good point.
:::*It takes less than a day from that World's perspective, but from another World's perspective it could take more or less time. I was referring to the conversation Riku and Joshua have during Riku's second visit to Traverse Town, when Joshua reveals that when Shiki crossed over to Sora's Traverse Town, the timer on her hand had more time left than her partner Neku's, and when Rhyme crossed over to Riku's Traverse Town, the timer on her hand had less time left than her partner Beat's. This indicates that time moves more quickly in Sora's Traverse Town than it does in Riku's. Riku argued that since they were different Worlds that was normal, but Joshua pointed out that it meant they couldn't be parallel Worlds like they'd first thought. So, yeah. An entire day in Radiant Garden could be half that in Twilight Town. And that brings another point. Who can say if a day has passed if the sun is continually setting? And if we think too much about the precise number of days that a journey takes we start to ask how long a day would be from Sora's perspective. Would he measure days based on how long they were on the Destiny Islands? Would he just say it had been a day once he felt sleepy? In the end, I've decided it doesn't really matter, which is why I came up with the numbering system seen above to make it easier to reference specific events and when they happened without relying on terms like days and years which are unreliable and variant in this series.
:::*The issue I have with that is that there's no reference point other than "the start of X game." If we want to use dates at all we need to decide on an event to use as a reference point and get a system going. We could use that for the headers too, if we wanted. Instead of "Era 1" or "That day when Sora takes a nap and Riku throws a log at him," for the header, we could have "14 years since Sora's birth" or "9 years after Kairi's arrival on Destiny Islands." We could alternatively come up with a year system like, as an example, BA (Before Awakening) and AA (After Awakening) and measure events from the start of KH1 like that.
:::*I guess I just take issue with the idea of giving some of the events valid "this many days exactly" dates while giving most of the non-prologue stuff "kind of this many days ish" dates. It's unavoidable, I know, but I loves me some consistency. (My opinion is still that since the games don't bother with specific dates we shouldn't either, but I'm a vocal minority in that department, I think.) Fabala011 (talk) 00:11, 3 August 2012 (UTC)
::::Twilight Town still has night, it's just the sun apparently never gets too far up above the horizon. That's normal for a planet if the town is at an extreme latitude. For the day thing, that's getting into issues of "universal time", which doesn't exist in the real world either. If the sun rises and sets on whatever world he's on, that's a day.
::::I really, really don't want this to be subdivided into a false date numbering system like "BA" or "AA". We should stick to what is actually shown in the games. Pulling headers based on significant events only is also going to make it difficult to represent the events leading up to them, since they would naturally go slightly before it. I think the best bet is to organize them roughly before the start of a game, where the known events start happening. 07:31, 12 August 2012 (UTC)
Update based on Official Site
This is the first time I've done anything to help on this site, so please tell me if I'm doing something wrong. So I was looking for something related to Kingdom Hearts (I can't remember what anymore) and I came across the new portal for the Kingdom Hearts page in Japan. So I was thinking, what if we modeled the timeline article based on that. The new portal has a chronology section. I think all we need to do is translate and use that for the timeline here. I couldn't find the North America portal, so I don't think there is an official translation. The site is here: KINGDOM HEARTS| KINGDOM HEARTS PORTAL SITE| SQUARE ENIX Any thoughts?

:Ok, well, I kind of stopped trying, but last night I found a picture of the chronology page, just translated. I don't know about you guys, but I think that under the Timeline, that there should be a story, or even better: make a story page. I've started a new draft for it in my Gadget Lab. Anyone can contribute, especially for Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days, Re:coded, and 3D: Dream Drop Distance. Basically, I'm just listing major events that affect the plot of the whole saga/series, and highliting game beginnings and endings rather than dividing by game. I think those events serve the timeline well, and if anyone wants more detail, they can go to the individual games and/or worlds' pages. Any additional ideas are welcome.
Hopefully, we can give this article a new birth!}}

The χ Problem
It appears that the site considers Kingdom Hearts Union χ[Cross] to be a remake of Kingdom Hearts χ[chi]. This however is only partially true. Kingdom Hearts Union χ[Cross]] takes place after Kingdom Hearts χ[chi] has already concluded and is post-Keyblade War. The reason it is a partial remake is because Player relives the events depicted in Kingdom Hearts χ[chi], but there are discrepancies. Quests 501-525 concerning the reckless Keyblade wielder did not take place in Kingdom Hearts χ[chi]. The true new content does not commence until Quest 571 however, and there is no depiction of the finale of Kingdom Hearts χ[chi] through-and-through, simply flashbacks of Player's collapse and the initial battle in the Badlands and the battle against Aced that preceded the initiation of the Keyblade War. This makes the timeline essentially Kingdom Hearts χ[chi] (with Kingdom Hearts χ Back Cover taking place both before and concurrently) then Heart and Key followed by Kingdom Hearts Union χ[Cross] and Dark Footsteps/Unchained 0[zero] - as Dark Footsteps has to follow the introduction of Enchanted Dominion in Kingdom Hearts Union χ[Cross] but has yet to be addressed within the storyline. Thereby I don't know if you could really argue the inclusion of Kingdom Hearts Union χ in the timeline, but if anyone objects to my decision, please let me know. == I have an equation... ==
While I like the idea of keeping a nice and tidy timeline of the series here, as it currently stands, it doesn't really do it justice primarily because you have events that do not run concurrently with the game they're placed in. For example, the meeting with Xehanort and the Master is right at the start of Re Mind, yet takes place which appears to be right after Dark Road. There's also the events of Limitcut, which takes place a whole year after KH3, but can't really be placed anywhere on here. And in-between all the games, we have the "Reconnect" secret endings and parentheses. SO! Rather than just a list of games in canonical chronological order, I strongly suggest we make the timeline a list of important events in the order they happen. Just very short, quick summaries no more than a sentence or two, with links to the respective games/endings they're from. It's slightly more work than what we currently have, but it's far more robust and generally meaningful. That way, we can even feature the timeline on the front page for newcomers! --Samoa Joe (talk) 05:37, 25 June 2020 (UTC)
:BEHOLD!!! My stuff. --Samoa Joe (talk) 07:58, 25 June 2020 (UTC)
::I added a table as experiment to see how it would look. And while it does increase the page length a lot, I find it easier to read than the wall of text above it. Also, images make it look less bland. 16:43, 25 June 2020 (UTC)
:::Yup! I was actually thinking of ways to make it more visual, and a table is one way to do it! You're brilliant lol! --Samoa Joe (talk) 18:16, 25 June 2020 (UTC)
Dark Road's Placement in the Timeline?
Why is Kingdom Hearts Union χ Dark Road considered the indeterminate years? Xehanort's meeting with the Master of Masters takes place 75 years before Kingdom Hearts III (so 74 BKH), while the time that Xehanort laid flowers on those four graves was 4 years after the main story of Dark Road. I believe both events were mentioned to be around the time of Xehanort and Eraqus's Mark of Mastery, which means that the Upperclassmen went missing 78 BKH. As an aside, if Xehanort was said by Nomura to be around 80 in KHBBS, but Young Xehanort was said to be 18 - 20. This is where you run into issue, as Xehanort was said to have been sent on his journey by Ansem SoD, and those two met before he even got to Scala ad Caelum, which would suggest that he would be 12 rather than 18, but I'm inclined to believe that 80 is more like a rough statement than a definitive age, given that Young Xehanort doesn't appear to be that much younger than Aqua, who is 18, making it more likely that Xehanort was born 92 BKH.
Thus:
*92 BKH: Xehanort is born on Destiny Islands.
*78 BKH: Xehanort encounters his future self's Heartless, who sends him on a mission through time to assemble the Seekers of Darkness in the World That Never Was to greet his future-most self.
*74 BKH: Xehanort meets the Master of Masters and is guided toward his destiny opposing those who rely on false light and seeking to restore equilibrium.
*14 BKH: Xehanort cleaves Ventus's Heart in two when he fails to draw upon darkness in order to forge the χ-Blade
*10 BKH: Xehanort possesses Terra, faces Aqua, and uses No Name to unlock his own Heart, but is returned to the Realm of Light by Aqua's sacrifice.
*9 BKH: Xehanort undertakes experiments on the Heart and discovers the Heart of Radiant Garden; Xehanort meets Mickey Mouse; Xehanort unlocks his own Heart, as well as the Hearts of Ansem the Wise's apprentices - becoming Ansem SoD and Xemnas; Ansem SoD travels back in time, while Xemnas and the Nobodies of Ansem the Wise's apprentices cast their master into the Realm of Darkness; Xehanort sends Kairi into the Ocean Between via the Life Boat in order to locate the chosen wielder of the Kingdom Key.
