| ===Encore une autre question de langue !===
| |
| {{TNE|remerciement=Thanks ! (Now I know your full name... though it's gonna take me a little effort to pronounce it.)}}
| |
|
| |
|
| {{Xiggie|text=hehe :P
| |
|
| |
| also, just wandering, how do you pronounce ''Singh''? (is it like ''sængh'' (Æ = I) or is it like ''sigh'' with a ''n'' added...?)}}
| |
|
| |
| {{TNE|text=Pronounce it as you pronounce "sing". With a very hard "ng" sound.}}
| |
|
| |
| {{Xiggie|happy=thanks :P
| |
|
| |
| in case you're wandering, Sigurður Heimir Guðjónsson is pronounced something like: ''Sig-earth-ur Heim-ir Guth-john-son'' (Heimir is similar to Homer, but with a '''ei''' sound (like in h'''ey''') instead of the '''o''' sound) (Guth is something like ''goth''...)
| |
|
| |
| does that help...}}
| |
|
| |
| {{TNE|happytext=Okay, I get it ! Thanks ! :DDDDDDDDD So it's pronounced "hey-mer" and not "high-mer".}}
| |
|
| |
| {{Xiggie|text=yeah, it's like ''hey-mer'' :P}}
| |
|
| |
| {{TNE|text=Nice. ^_^ Guess it wasn't so tongue-tying after all...}}
| |
|
| |
| {{Xiggie|text=hehe :P
| |
|
| |
| well, Icelandic is however sort of a rough language to speak (also, kinda hard to learn)...}}
| |
|
| |
| {{TNE|text=Well... to me I guess it doesn't matter. I love languages (and judging from the amount of Babel I have on my userpage !). It might be sort of an uphill task at the beginning, but as I once told [[User:Unbirth]], learning any language for that matter, is easy, but mastering it is hard.
| |
|
| |
| Heck, I wonder how I managed to pronounce every syllable in Annika Ljungberg's ''Song of Mana'' from Square's ''Legend of Mana'', when I'm not entirely familiar with Swedish phonetics.}}
| |
|
| |
| {{Xiggie|text=just a tip: if you learn any one of these languages, ''Danish, Swedish, Norwegian, German, Icelandic, Faroese'', it is very easy to learn the basics of the others...
| |
|
| |
| guess that's why I am so good at Danish... :P (I can also read in Swedish and Norwegian, since it is similar to Danish/Icelandic).
| |
|
| |
| and, do you know, Faroese is just like a language of Icelandic slang... :P}}
| |
|
| |
| {{TNE|text=Yep, as quite a lot of English words originate from Scandinavian languages, right ?
| |
|
| |
| Ya know, I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw that "Wednesday", "Thursday" and "Friday" originated from Swedish.
| |
|
| |
| EDIT : No kidding ??????? :D Well, somewhere along the line... every language is closely linked, I guess.}}
| |
|
| |
| {{Xiggie|text=hehe :P see this:
| |
|
| |
| an example of Nordic words used in English but with a different meaning : ''Sky''. however, in Icelandic, ''Ský'' means cloud...
| |
|
| |
| another is : ''Ski''. In Icelandic it's ''Skíði'' (the i is silent, so it's like ''ski-th'')
| |
|
| |
| it's like in Icelandic, ''Sæng'' means duvet, but in Danish, ''Seng'' means bed!}}
| |
|
| |
| {{TNE|text=Hm.... Not bad. ^_^ Guess I can be my very own ''petite linguiste'' (though there aren't any prospects for linguists over here...). I'm beginning to like this '''a lot''' !
| |
|
| |
| EDIT : Remember the userbox ? The word ''kunattu'' (mind the spelling and the accents) - does it mean "command" (of a language), or knowledge, or something like that ? I mean, what's the exact word ?}}
| |
|
| |
| {{Xiggie|text=''Kunnátta'' means knowledge, the Icelandic row of words is kinda messed up from the English perspective... while you say:
| |
|
| |
| ''This user is able to contribute with a basic level of English.'', we say: ''Þessi notandi hefur grundvallarskilning á Íslensku. (this user has a basic understanding of the Icelandic language)''}}
| |
|
| |
| {{TNE|happytext=Wait. ''Kunnátta'' means knowledge. The French ''connaissance'' means knowledge. They're linked !!}}
| |
|
| |
| {{Xiggie|text=hehe, isn't everything :P}}
| |
|
| |
| {{TNE|shocktext=Impressive. Though of course, when said verbally, it'll all sound like a Tower of Babel...}}
| |
|
| |
| {{Xiggie|text=...Tower of Babel...?
| |
|
| |
| ''(hehe, you know, Babel is similar to an Icelandic slang, "babbl" = bullcrap :P)''}}
| |
|
| |
| {{TNE|text=Tower of Babel... you know, from that biblical story where they wanted to build a tower as high as the heavens... but how God caused confusion among them and all the languages were formed ?
| |
|
| |
| Oh, and there's also the English word ''babble'' - to babble is to ramble or to speak nonsense.}}
| |
|
| |
| {{Xiggie|text=oh... that rings a bell...
| |
|
| |
| and... oh, so babble is a word :P}}
| |
|
| |
| {{TNE|text=Yep. ^_^ Funny how we can draw so many connections, ya ?}}
| |
|
| |
| {{Xiggie|happy=ya :D
| |
|
| |
| it's funny, every time we say "ya?" I think of Wakka :P}}
| |
|
| |
| {{BebopKate|text=German has so many connections to English. They're both in the same language branch, Germanic, so that makes sense I suppose; I didn't realize Icelandic was in there, but it makes sense too now that I think about it. That's part of the reason I took German in high school...I'm very lazy. ^_^ The other reason is its the language of my ancestors.
| |
|
| |
| I never could quite catch on to Romance languages. I've always had a rough time with Spanish, for example, even though it was taught throughout school when was growing up. I think it's all the genders; that's always what I had a hard time with in German.}}
| |
|
| |
| {{TNE|text=Xiggie : Exactement !
| |
|
| |
| BebopKate : Here's a thought about genders for Romance languages - they're usually indicated by the '''ends''' of the words. Like in French, almost every other word that has an extra E at the end is feminine. I know I had a bit of a hard time picking that up, but that's all behind me.
| |
|
| |
| Heck, had it not been for the Norman conquest of England in the 11th century our English just wouldn't be like this, with all its connections to Romance languages... I can't imagine what we'd be writing !}}
| |
|
| |
| {{Xiggie|text=hah, lol
| |
|
| |
| in the words which are similar in english and Icelandic, the Icelandic ones just change the word and/or it's ending. e.g. Bath => Bað, eat => éta}}
| |
|
| |
| {{TNE|happytext=Not bad, I'd say ! I could store all this talk on languages for further analysis. :D}}
| |
|
| |
| {{Xiggie|happy=hehe, from all the Icelandic tips I've given you, you can probably understand basic Icelandic... ;P}}
| |
|
| |
| {{TNE|text=I might... I guess. ^_^ Oh, it'll be fun to finally earn an Is-1 ranking !}}
| |
|
| |
| {{Xiggie|text=Oh, i'd be fun to chat in my native language here with someone :P
| |
|
| |
| ''Það má vel vera að ég hafi nokkuð sterkar tilfiningar til þín'' ;P (I am so not gonna tell you what that means ;P)}}
| |
|
| |
| {{TNE|text=''Je suis rendue faible.''
| |
|
| |
| Darn, this is turning into a Tower of Babel...}}
