Gates can be unlocked when a specific item or object unique to the world that [[Sora]] is currently in is wrapped in light. With a gust of wind, the item proceeds to reveal its world's [[Keyhole]] as a symbol shaped like Sora's crown pendant appears on the ground beneath him. Sora then spins his [[Keyblade]] and unseals the world's Gate, opening [[Gummi Missions#List of Gummi Routes|new pathways]].

After the events of ''{{c|Kingdom Hearts|game}}'', many of the [[world]]s that had been threatened by the [[Heartless]] are restored, as are the barriers that prevent travel between them. However, [[Yen Sid]] tells Sora and his friends that the worlds have prepared new pathways for them to travel upon that can be accessed by unlocking special Gates. Meanwhile, the Heartless and [[Nobodies]] use their own paths to infiltrate other worlds: [[Corridor of Darkness|corridors of darkness]]. By linking these dark pathways to the Gates between worlds, they trigger the appearance of [[:Category:Gummi Enemies|enemy Gummi Ships]].   

Worlds that Sora unlocks while visiting others, such as [[Space Paranoids]] and [[100 Acre Wood]], do not appear to have Gates of their own and are accessed through other means.
