Dilan is an apprentice to the ruler and lead scientist of [[Radiant Garden]], Ansem the Wise, alongside [[Braig]], [[Even]], [[Aeleus]], and [[Ienzo]], and guards the castle doors along with Aeleus. When [[Ventus]] attempts to enter the castle while looking for [[Mickey Mouse]], Dilan and Aeleus block him as the castle is closed to visitors. Dilan suggests that Ventus should go home, but he runs off to fight the [[Unversed]]. Dilan and Aeleus prepare to follow him, but Even interrupts and reminds them that they need to guard the castle. Even then informs them that Ansem wants to see them, and both guards head inside.

Later, Braig brings Dilan and Ansem to the Central Square, where they find an amnesiac [[Terra-Xehanort]] and [[Aqua]]'s [[Keyblade]] and [[Keyblade Armor]] that had been left with him. While Braig takes Xehanort to the castle, Dilan carries the armor and Keyblade.

Later, Dilan throws [[Lea]] and [[Isa]] out of the castle after their attempt to sneak in.

===Between ''Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep'' and ''Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days''===
About a decade prior to ''{{c|Kingdom Hearts|game}}'', after Xehanort has also become an apprentice, Ansem begins performing tests on Xehanort's [[heart]] due to his worry that the [[darkness]] in people's hearts will eventually consume his world. Eventually, he creates a laboratory in his castle's basement for such experimentation at the urging of Ienzo. 

Unbeknownst to Ansem, Dilan and the other apprentices begin conducting inhumane experiments on the human heart and the darkness within it in the laboratory. Such experimentation leads to the creation of [[Heartless]]. When Ansem discovers their secret experiments, he immediately orders them to stop. 

Shortly after Lea and Isa join them as apprentices, Dilan and the other apprentices oust Ansem and banish him to the [[Realm of Darkness]]. Xehanort convinces the other apprentices to cast off their hearts and uses his newly-regained ability to use a Keyblade to remove their hearts.{{storylink|Dream Drop Distance}} As the apprentices have strong wills, they create [[Nobodies]] alongside their Heartless. The Nobodies form [[Organization XIII]], and Dilan takes on the name Xaldin.

Dilan is recompleted following the destruction of his Heartless and Xaldin. He awakens within the [[Heartless Manufactory]] with Even, Ienzo, Aeleus, and Lea. Having not fully recovered, he initially rests with Even.

Sometime after Lea leaves to search for Braig and Isa, Even goes missing. Dilan shows [[Riku]] and Mickey the location in Radiant Garden where he found Terra-Xehanort to help them in their search for leads to find Aqua.

The night before the second [[Keyblade War]], Dilan and Aeleus rush into the lab to see Ienzo with their former master Ansem the Wise, who has been returned to them by [[Demyx]]. As Ienzo apologizes to Ansem for their betrayal, Dilan is comforted by Aeleus.

Following [[Xehanort]]'s defeat and [[Naminé]]'s restoration, Dilan and Aeleus escort Naminé out of the castle to be picked up by Riku.

==Design==
Dilan is a tall, broad-shouldered man that wears a dark slate grey guard uniform, which is adorned with a curled heart symbol, and white gloves. The front of his jacket sports two rows of gold buttons, silver highlights, and a red and white heart like the one on his gloves. He also wears a belt and knee-high boots, both of which are black. Dilan's hair is black and worn in long dreadlocks. He keeps most of his dreads tied into a low ponytail, but one dangles over the right side of his face. He also has thick sideburns, though they do not hook over his cheeks like Xaldin's do, thick eyebrows, and violet eyes. 

Dilan wields a single [[lance]] with silver edges, a blue head, and a handle that alternates from violet to silver. The curled heart symbol is incorporated into the head of the lance.

==Personality==
While Dilan appears to bear similarities in personality to Xaldin, given his rather strict nature, his character seems to be much more benevolent and noble than his Nobody, demonstrated when he was willing to defend Radiant Garden from the Unversed and expressed genuine concern for Ventus's well-being after the latter volunteered to fight the Unversed alone. In fact, Dilan was only stopped from following Ventus by Even ordering him to return to his post.

A strong possibility is that Xaldin's hostile attitude towards Axel shown in ''Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix'' is derived from Dilan's confrontation with Lea at the end of ''Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep'', whom he throws out of Hollow Bastion along with Isa for trespassing.
