It can be equipped to characters to improve their defense in a number of ways, replacing part of the function of [[Accessory|accessories]] from the [[Kingdom Hearts (game)|first game]].

The main purpose of armor is to improve the defensive powers of the characters. In addition to providing a basic defense bonus, many pieces of armor also provide specific defense bonuses against one or more kinds of elemental [[Magic]], such as [[Fire]], [[Blizzard]], [[Thunder]], and [[Darkness]]. From ''[[Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix]]'' onward, certain armors grant additional special abilities when equipped.

==Obtaining Armors==

Most of the weaker armor can be purchased from the [[Moogle Shop]] in [[Twilight Town]], [[The Land of Dragons]], [[Disney Castle]], and [[Agrabah]]. The more powerful armor must be [[Item synthesis|synthesized]] through Free Development. Four pieces of armor, [[Elven Bandanna]], [[Gaia Belt]], [[Cosmic Chain]], and [[Cosmic Belt]], are found in treasure chests. 

The [[Champion Belt]] is the only missable armor, as it is obtained if Roxas wins the [[Struggle]] tournament. If he loses, he gets a {{c|Medal|accessory}} instead.

Armors can be obtained in various ways. Some are found in [[treasure chest]]s, like the [[Shield Belt]]. Others can be bought in the [[Moogle Shop]], such as the [[Fire Bangle]]. The best, like the [[Cosmic Belt]], are obtained via synthesis and bonuses.

[[Sora]], [[Donald]], and [[Goofy]] each begin ''Kingdom Hearts II'' with one armor slot in their equipment area; in ''Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix'', Goofy instead starts with two armor slots. They can accumulate more armor slots through the game based on specific events and battles.

*Sora can gain two more armor slots. In order to open them, he must defeat [[Beast]] the first time through [[Beast's Castle]] and [[Demyx]] the second time through [[Hollow Bastion]], and [[Vexen]]'s [[Absent Silhouette]]{{FMII}}.
*Donald can gain one more armor slot by defeating the [[Hydra]] at [[Olympus Coliseum]].
*Goofy can gain one more armor slot by defeating the [[Blizzard Lord and Volcanic Lord]] in Agrabah.

World-specific characters such as [[Mulan]], [[Tron]], and [[Jack Sparrow]] also have at least one armor slot, but cannot gain any more in the course of the game. In the same vein, Roxas begins the game with one slot and cannot gain more through experience.

Sora and Donald each start the game with one armor slot, and Goofy starts with two slots. They can earn more as the game progresses. Earnings are as follows:
*Sora gains a second armor slot after defeating the pack of Heartless at the {{c|Tower|koc}}, just before fighting the [[Grim Guardianess]]. He then gains a third slot after defeating the [[Darkubes]] in [[San Fransokyo]].
*Donald gains a second armor slot after defeating the enemies in the electrified area at the [[Second Floor]].
*Goofy gains a third armor slot after defeating the [[Metal Troll]] in [[San Fransokyo]].
