Though both reports are originally thought to be written by [[Ansem the Wise]], he claims in his Secret Ansem Report that he is only responsible for Ansem's Report part 1, while his apprentice [[Terra-Xehanort|Xehanort]] stole his identity and wrote Ansem's Report parts 2-13<ref>The pages of the Ansem's Report are numbered 0-12 in the Japanese versions of ''Kingdom Hearts'' and ''Kingdom Hearts II'', and this numbering is preserved when they are mentioned in ''Kingdom Hearts II''.</ref> (with parts 10-13 in particular being written after Ansem the Wise's banishment to the [[Realm of Darkness]]).

==Story==
Ansem began work on the report in order to study the darkness in the hearts of beings, and to determine ways to protect his homeworld, [[Radiant Garden]], from its ravages. The reports were later written at some point by Xehanort. Ansem later wrote a new set of reports after his escape from the Realm Between.

==Trivia==
*Ansem mentions "earlier reports" detailing his research into darkness, though he claims that he only wrote the first report, which merely posed his question. The earlier reports also chronicle experiences that were only his, such as his meeting with King Mickey. While some of this can be explained by Xehanort's assumption of Ansem, which may have led him to pretend to have Ansem's memories as well, it does not explain Ansem's mention of earlier reports. Especially because the pages in ''Kingdom Hearts'' were called simply the "Ansem's Report", it is possible that there were other side reports that Ansem wrote between Ansem's Report 1 and Ansem's Report 2.
*A further inconsistency appears with the mention of Ansem's apprentices working with Xehanort to study the Heartless. In the original report, it seems to imply that Xehanort was working completely alone. In addition, Ansem indicates that he was unaware of the results of his apprentices' research and Xehanort's fraudulent additions to his report until after meeting with King Mickey, while in Mickey's flashback, Ansem mentions many of the topics covered by Xehanort's reports, and Xehanort himself mentions having presented his experiment to Ansem previously.<!--Anyone have a solution for this?-->
