For instrumentation, each version uses the same instruments, though for games not in the HD remakes, some voices are covered through electronic means- such as synthesizer. In general, the instrumentation includes: a complete strings section- violin, viola, cello, and stringed bass, flute, oboe, clarinets, glockenspiel, bass drum, suspended cymbal, and castanets.

The livelier tempo paired with the equally moving, yet smooth, articulated sixteenth note runs in the oboe, flute, clarinet, and glockenspiel sections push the piece forward. However, it is the pizzicato style playing in the strings that epitomizes the articulated style. Common in 3/4 time signatures, the piece follows almost a waltz style in that the initial "call" and emphasis is placed on beat one of each measure by the lower timbre instruments [such as string bass and bass drum], with a response on beats two and three from the more melodic [oboe, flute, clarinet] and harmonic [such as violin and viola] instruments. The second half of the piece features the use of percussion instruments not only to provide a new variation on the already established melody, but also to emphasis the 3/4 style as previously mentioned: bass drum playing on beat one, castanets on beats two and three, and a short suspended cymbal roll with crescendo on beats two and three for further emphasis. The main melody is shared primarily between the oboe and clarinet, with the flutes and glockenspiel occasionally sharing moments of the main theme. In homage to the track's name, the short and fleeting motif played by the glockenspiel alludes to a "twinkling" sound. This tied with the overall musical texture/atmosphere creates a somewhat mystic, light, and dreamy mood.
