It was originally called the ''Protes Chain'' in Japanese, which may be one of two mythological references. [[wikipedia:Proteus|Proteus]] was a Greek god of the sea known for his shapeshifting abilities. However, it may also be tied to [[wikipedia:Proetus|Proetus]], son of [[Abas Chain|Abas]] and brother of [[Acrisius]], both of who have items named after them in ''[[Kingdom Hearts II]]''.
