It was never directly stated when this game took place in the Kingdom Hearts series due to the fact it wasn't included and is not considered a side game of importance. The first theory where it could have taken place is in the first Kingdom Hearts because Sora has already met Donald and Goofy, and is traveling in a Gummi ship. It could have happened when they were traveling between different worlds. Another theory is that it took place right after Kingdom Hearts, but before Chain of Memories. He is still 14 and has his memories.

A Kingdom Hearts game was developed exclusively for V CAST, Verizon Wireless' broadband service, and was released on October 1, 2004 in Japan and on February 4, 2005 in the United States. It was one of the launch games for the V CAST services. The game, developed by Superscape and published by Disney Mobile with no involvement from Square Enix, features the original Kingdom Hearts' gameplay, modified for the input method of mobile phones.

The first section begins with Sora, Donald, Goofy, and Jiminy Cricket traveling across the universe when they decide to go to sleep and put the Gummi Ship on autopilot. In their sleep, a strange creature crept undetected into the vessel and subsumed the dreams of Sora, who then wakes up on Swashbuckler's Island, where he is shipwrecked and cannot find Donald or Goofy. His goal is to find his friends and leave the island. After you solve puzzles and find items, you are able to leave the island on a raft. The game then ends after you leave the island and picks up in a different game pack. The Heartless in this game as well serve as an enemy. Sora still has his Keyblade and is able to use magic.

Reception of the first playable mission pack was mixed. The game was criticized for its awkward controls and limited availability. The visual appeal was praised; GameSpot stated Sora "is very detailed and well animated" and complimented the 3D environments.
