[[Ansem the Wise]] suspected that his research was endangering the citizens of [[Radiant Garden]], so he ordered his apprentices to cease the experiments on the hearts immediately. However, his foremost apprentice, Xehanort, continued the experiments. He also convinced Ansem's other apprentices, [[Braig]], [[Dilan]], [[Even]], [[Aeleus]], and [[Ienzo]], to help him in his experiments on the heart, but eventually, the experiments drove them mad, and they descended to Darkness, then they revolted against their teacher, Ansem, and sent him through the Realm of Darkness, where he was driven by revenge and became the mastermind, [[DiZ]].  
Ansem the Wise began his research into the darkness in peoples' hearts to protect his kingdom with the help of his six apprentices, starting by experimenting on his foremost apprentice, Xehanort. At the goading of his youngest apprentice, Ienzo, he constructed an underground laboratory to help achieve their objectives. After a series of experiments, Ansem the wise had the lab closed to prevent the darkness in the experiments from twisting his apprentices' hearts any further. Unbeknownst to him, however, the apprentices had continued  the research, with Xehanort penning reports on the experiments under the stolen name of his teacher.


After experimenting further, they caused the birth of the Heartless, who devour their hearts, as well as the citizens of Radiant Garden. The Heartless then began to thrive and spread to other worlds, devouring innocent people, and driving the worlds they invade into darkness. After a while, Maleficent makes the remains of Radiant Garden her new headquarters, renaming the twisted remains [[Hollow Bastion]], and takes control of the Heartless.
After a number of inhumane experiments, Xehanort finally caused the collapse of a few of his subjects' hearts, after which thier bodies were consumed by the dark realm, and they became the first deliberate heartless. Xehanort conducted experiments on these creatures before nming them, noting that they only responded to living samples presented.
 
At the behest of his new friend King Mickey, Ansem the Wise re-opened his basement lab, finding the results of the horrific experiments and reports left by Xehanort under his stolen name. After confronting his apprentices on this, they rebelled against their master and banished him to the Realm of Nothingness, their dark powers growing increasingly stronger.
 
At some point in time following this, the apprentices constructed a Heartless Manufactory, as well as the Chamber of Repose beneath it. It was at this point that the first man-made heartless were produced, dubbed 'Emblems' due to the mark added to them to destinguish them from regular, 'Pureblood' heartless.
 
Wising to fully control the darkness, as well as the heartless, the apprentices removed their own hearts and became heartless, as well as the core Nobodies of Organization XIII. There is speculation that they used a heart-removal machine, briefly seen in the Hollow Bastion section of the World Terminus, where Sora read an plaque with an inscription before being attacked by Heartless.
 
Xehanort was the only one of the aoorentices to retain his humanity following the removal of his heart, and so filled his former home, Radiant Garden, with heartless, causing its residents to flee. The town was renamed Hollow Bastion after its collapse, to reflect the nearly-destroyed castle that was the last remaining part of the world.
