Ansem the Wise, after the plans he set up for the boy while in sleep go awry, theorized that Sora's selflessness and ability to connect with others' hearts may have been the reason how he returned to his human form after being turned into a Heartless without needing to destroy Roxas prior. Furthermore, Ansem believed that Sora may also have the power to bring back those that have been lost or no longer exist.
