(bad image coding, what's your source for the Radiant Garden bit?; the first Ansem bit was real; the hood was NOT specially made for him, according to Nomura)

While Terra, Ventus, and Aqua search for Master Xehanort and Vanitas, King Mickey undergoes the Mark of Mastery Exam under the supervision of Yen Sid at the Mysterious Tower, accompanied by Donald and Goofy, during which he uses the Star Seeker Keyblade. Later on, Mickey runs away without Yen Sid´s permission, using a Star Shard that allows him to travel throughout other worlds; however, it works rather randomly, as he has not learned how to control it. Terra witnesses the King's leave when he first visits the tower.

After the barriers between the worlds shatter, causing meteors to fall from the sky, Mickey realizes the threat that the Darkness presents. Mickey seeks help for his concerns and the danger he expects. By using the material from the meteors themselves to make a Gummi Ship, Mickey travels to Radiant Garden and meets Ansem the Wise. Mickey befriends Ansem and tells him of his concern about the growing Darkness between the worlds. It is also here that Mickey meets Xehanort. Seeing him seems to disturb the King.

King Mickey arrives in Traverse Town at the same time as Sora, but keeps himself out of sight. Pluto follows him through a Corridor of Darkness into the Realm of Darkness, where Mickey finds the Keyblade of the Realm of Darkness needed to seal the Door to Darkness. By the time the Final Keyhole was opened, Mickey finds Riku, whose body had been stolen by Ansem, Seeker of Darkness, and quickly becomes allies with him. After the defeat of Ansem, he helps Sora to seal Kingdom Hearts to prevent the Heartless from escaping through it. Although Sora is reluctant to leave Mickey and Riku trapped within the Realm of Darkness, Mickey assures them that there will always be a door to the light, and thanks Donald and Goofy for their loyalty.

When Riku arrives in Castle Oblivion and meets DiZ in the form of Ansem, Mickey sends a bit of his light to help Riku's heart fight him off. Once Riku realised he could "smell" darkness, Mickey sent more of his power to his freind, in the form of a hologram. He made RIku promise to keep fighting and that he would find a way to him soon. (Mickey knew this wasn't the real Ansem, but he didn't tell Riku.)
Sora, Donald and Goofy initially enter Castle Oblivion believing the King to be there, but he does not enter the castle until Riku awakens in Castle Oblivion and is attacked by Ansem. Mickey sends a bit of his light to help Riku's heart fight him off, and sends more of his power in the form of a hologram after Riku learns to "smell" the darkness. He gets Riku to promise to keep fighting, and promises that in return he will soon be by his side. When Riku is knocked unconscious by Lexaeus long enough for Ansem to possess him once again, Mickey's light appears within Riku's heart to keep Ansem at bay. Afterward, Mickey reveals that he had found a Twilight Town world card, which had taken him from the Realm of Darkness to Castle Oblivion. Mickey meets Riku at the world's exit, where they both meet DiZ, who seems familiar to Mickey.

When Riku fights Lexaeus and gets knocked unconcious long enough for the true Ansem to possess him once again, Mickey appears in Riku's heart via his light and keeps Ansem at bay.
Before Riku goes to eliminate the last traces of Ansem, he tries to get Mickey to promise to destroy him if Ansem possesses him again, but Mickey dismisses the request and promises to instead rescue Riku no matter what. After Ansem is defeated, Mickey rescues Riku from the darkness and takes him to the castle's entrance hall. He calms Riku's concerns about the darkness by explaining that although he originally thought it was pure evil and shouldn't exist, he respects Riku's choice to use both light and darkness. When Riku thanks "your Majesty", Mickey laughs and says that, as a friend, Riku can just call him "Mickey" from now on.
By this point, Mickey had found a Twilight Town world card, whicht toke him from the Realm of Darkness to Castle Oblivion. It was then he sent more light into Riku's heart to keep Ansem at bay. When Riku used the card, Mickey ended up in the exit hall, where he met DiZ, feeling familiarity with the egnagmatic being. Once DiZ explained the Organization would pursue them after leaving the castle, Mickey was gifted with a black coat specialy made for him; the hood was modified for his ears.

Before Riku went to slay what remained of Ansem, Mickey promised to rescue him; Riku wanted him to kill him, but Mickey didn't wish to do something so terrible to his freind. Once Ansem was defeated, Mickey saved Riku from the darkness and toke him to the entrance hall on the first floor. Questioning Riku about what he wished to do next, Mickey calmed Riku's concerns about the darkness in him by saying it was his alone. He then explained that time with Riku hs made him change his opinion about darkness; he originaly thought it was something pure evil that shouldn't exist. However, Riku's chosen to use both dark and light, a path he wishes to see be taken; Mickey wants to travel with him to see where the path will take. He then tells Riku that he can call him "Mickey" because they're good freinds now.
After leaving the Castle, Mickey and Riku meet DiZ at a crossroads, who presents them with black coats to hide them from the Organization, asks Riku whether he has chosen to follow the roads of light or darkness. Riku instead chooses the "twilit road to dawn", and the two friends walk past.

Leaving Castle Oblvion, Mickey met DiZ again, who wished for Riku to choose between the roads of light and darkness. Riku choose neither, opting to walk the Road to Dawn.
<!--At some point after this, Mickey ended up in Radiant Garden with Riku. Riku collapsed and he tried to help, but was brushed off. Mickey felt Riku was pushing himself too hard. -->

Later on, when Sora and Riku do not return from the Dreaming Realm at the expected time, Mickey enters and finds Riku in Where Nothing Gathers, using a Stopgun spell to freeze Young Xehanort and help him save the comatose Sora, but Xehanort remains unaffected by the spell and knocks Mickey aside in order to battle Riku. Following the fight, Mickey and Riku meet the revived Master Xehanort, who explains to them the details of his past endeavours and his continuing plans to recreate the  χ-blade and restart the Keyblade War. Mickey openly accuses Master Xehanort of ruining the lives of Terra, Aqua, Ven and Master Eraqus, but Xehanort merely quips that it was their destiny. As Master Xehanort prepares to turn Sora into a vessel for a piece of his heart, Xemnas physically restrains Mickey from rescuing him. Lea arrives in time to protect Sora, and Ansem responds by releasing his Guardian, who grabs Mickey and Riku but is knocked out by Donald and Goofy. Master Xehanort and his lackeys retreat, but swear revenge.
