After giving it some thought, and essentially reading your post, I can agree that "ass" can be filtered. But context must still be used when it is. And, personally, I've never seen any problems with the word on the IRC, so warnings should be distrubuted only if it's really serious. Unlike words like "shit" or "bitch", where dropping them is a serious no-no. As for crap, seriously. My point still stands.
- What the crap....?
- My day was crap-tastic, thanks.
- Oh, crap! I messed up!
- Crap... I have to go...
- Oh crap.
Normally, crap is self directed. There are scenarios such as DTN's, but they're rare. And, as context points out, warning worthy.
EDIT: Point is, just because words can be used offensively, doesn't mean they always will be. Context must always be put into play when it comes to these words, as, as it has been pointed out, they can be used offensively. But, lets face it, not always.
