When they confront him at the Keyblade Graveyard, Master Xehanort explains to Terra, Aqua, and Ventus that the Keyblades at the Keyblade Graveyard are the remains of the Keyblade wielders after the Keyblade War.
Notably, Birth By Sleep was the first title to show the darker powers of the Keyblade. Master Xehanort, and Terra while under Maleficent's control, are able to "unlock" hearts. In the former case, Master Xehanort removes the darkness from Ventus's heart, turning it into a heart of pure darkness, Vanitas, and later uses the Keyblade to remove his own heart and implant it in Terra's body, while in the latter case, Aurora's heart was removed, transported to Maleficent's castle, and imprisoned by her darkness. Master Xehanort is also able to generate an orb of darkness from his Keyblade that rips apart the Land of Departure, similar to the ones the Heartless appeared from in the original Kingdom Hearts, which destroyed Destiny Islands.
