Wendy first appears in Walt Disney's animated feature, ''{{w| Peter Pan (1953 film)|Peter Pan}}''. Her voice actor from this appearance, Kathryn Beaumont, returned to voice Wendy in the North American version of ''Kingdom Hearts''; she also provided the voice of [[Alice]]. Transitively, Wendy's portrayal in ''Peter Pan'' was in turn based on the character of Wendy Darling in J. M. Barrie's stage play ''Peter Pan, or The Boy Who Wouldn't Grow Up'', and the resulting novelization ''Peter and Wendy'', published seven years later. She is also believed to be derived from the character of Maimie Mannering from ''Peter Pan'''s first story, ''Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens'', which was first seen in 1902.
Though Wendy made her Disney debut in Walt Disney's animated feature, ''{{w|Peter Pan (1953 film)|Peter Pan}}'', the character of Wendy Darling made her overall first appearance in J.

In the film, Wendy is the eldest child of the Darling family and spends her nights entertaining her brothers John and Michael with stories of Peter Pan. Their father, George, a practical man, forbids her from telling her brothers Peter Pan stories, particularly since she has come of age to the point that she will no longer stay with her brothers in the nursery. One night, Peter Pan arrives and whisks Wendy and her brothers away on an adventure in Neverland, where Wendy learns to accept that she will have to grow up someday and so must make the most of her childhood while she still can.

Wendy was voiced by {{w|Kathryn Beaumont}}, who reprised the role in ''Kingdom Hearts''.
