+:On GIMP, you'll need to erase whatever colours you need to erase (or even sections), but it also takes proper maneuvring of the mouse (which I sometimes fail at). The current staff avatars were done on PowerPoint — edit contrast, edit brightness, add WordArt (the kind which is glowy and translucent, on PowerPoint 2010), group the thing, save as picture, crop to 1:1 aspect ratio.
