Template:Enemy Ephemera is a Keyblade wielder introduced in Kingdom Hearts χ. He has a desire to know the truth behind the gathering of Lux and the structure of the World.

Story

Kingdom Hearts χ

While in Daybreak Town, the Player finds Ephemera battling an Invisible. The player runs to Ephemera's aid following the defeat of the Heartless, and they introduce themselves, finding each other to be in rival Unions. Ephemera notes how he feels that it is fate that they have met each other, and to thank the Player, Ephemera reveals some information. Ephemera reveals that the Lux that the Player and other Keyblade wielders have been tasked to collect do not belong to the worlds, but to Daybreak Town, and that the many worlds they've been visiting are merely illusions. He also reveals that it's impossible to go through the whole world to collect Lux, so a non-existent world was created to facilitate gathering light from those places. He believes that the source of the illusory worlds are the Book of Prophecies that the Union's Foretellers possess. The Player then recalls a dream where the Player witnessed the Foretellers speaking to a mysterious unknown, and mentions this dream to Ephemera, who decides that they should investigate together.

Ephemera and the Player fight Heartless in the sewers on the way to the location from the Player's dream, but they return early because Ephemera considers it too dark to move on. The next day, Ephemera lights up the way with a candle, the Player follows him. Then, Ephemera protects the candle while the Player clears out the way for him. At one point, Ephemera wants the Player to check out the way for Heartless. The Player does so and encounters an Invisible which the Player battles. The Player appears to be losing the fight when Ephemera jumps in and defeats the Invisible, saying that he and the Player are even now. The ground then appears to be shaking for a moment, then Ephemera and the Player continue their path. Just before they reach their destination, Ephemera holds the Player back. He tells the Player that they should head back for today because they took too long in that place. He also says that skipping Union Missions for too long would rise suspicion, and since they have secured their route already, they should investigate on the next opportunity. To that, the Player agrees and Ephemera says that they are friends beyond Unions. They head back, however, in the night, Ephemera goes back to the place where they stopped, he says sorry to the Player and then goes in. On the next day, Ephemera is nowhere to be seen for the whole day although the Player waits all day for him.

Some time later, the Player has a dream showing Ephemera meeting with the Vulpeus Foreteller, Master Ava, at the Fountain Plaza, mentioning how Master Ava seemed to be troubled. Reasoning that even the Foretellers must get worried about things from time to time, Ephemera teasingly asks Ava if she could divulge some secrets about The Book of Prophecies to him. Ava denies Ephemera his request, asking if he's only teasing her because she's the easiest of the Foretellers to talk to. After Ephemera denies this, Ava assures him that it's all right and asks if she's right to assume that Ephemera is not tightly bound to his Union companions. Rather than answering Ava, Ephemera tells her that he'd made a friend from another Union (the Player) earlier and that the two of them had agreed to meet each other the following day. Hearing this, Ava suggests that Ephemera return home for some rest to prepare. Agreeing Ephemera stands and bids Ava farewell, stating that even though he doesn’t know what’s going on he hopes that Ava gets better. After Ephemera leaves, Ava thanks him and mentions to herself that should something unexpected happen she’ll be leaving it to the children like Ephemera, who are not bound to their Unions. Looking up, Ava is surprised as a dandelion seed floats past her face – to which she calmly says “Fly away and ride the wind… dandelion”.

The following day, Ephemera is shown meeting The Player at the fountain, apologizing for being late as something important had come up. Together the two go through the sewers and prepare to enter The Tower, only The Player still doesn’t appear to be ready yet. Seeing this, Ephemera tells The Player that he’ll be waiting before he fades away in a cluster of dandelion seeds. This wakes the Player from their dream and prompts them to seek out Master Ava for answers. Later, someone shows the Player Ephemera's encounter with Unknown χ in a dream, prompting Ava's curiosity. While Ava asks if Chirithy had been the one to show the Player the dream, Chirithy denies it, and so Ava suggests that it may have been Ephemera attempting to reach the Player from within the dream - revealing that Ephemera had been closing in on the truth and that she believes him to be in another dimension apart from the free one that they call "Unchained". The fact is that Ephemera seems to have attempted reaching out to the Player from this dimension, meaning that the Player may indeed be nearing the Unchained dimension as well – though whether or not they continues will depend on their heart.

Eventually, the Player encounters another Keyblade wielder named Skuld - who claims that she comes from the same Union as Ephemera, though something had changed within him and he'd recently left their Union, and now appears to be attempting to contact her from within her dreams; similarly to the Player. The two then witness a battle between the Anguis and Ursus Foretellers, encouraging Skuld to reveal that in her dreams Ephemera had told her that the world was nearing its end.
