After Ansem the Wise fires the Kingdom Hearts Encoder at Xemnas's artificial Kingdom Hearts, the shower of hearts that results attracts a gigantic swarm of Shadows, who attack the castle. Maleficent and Pete offer to hold off the Shadows so that Sora and his friends can defeat Xemnas, in exchange for the castle itself. The castle and the artificial world it was built on are destroyed in Xemnas's final assault, taking the Shadows with them.

In the Keyblade Graveyard, the Real Organization XIII summons a swarm of Shadows along with other enemies to attack the Guardians of Light when they first arrive in the Graveyard, and later a massive swarm of Shadows encircles the Guardians before being repelled by Yen Sid.

Shadows emerge from the ground to attack with a simple but powerful scratch attack. These Heartless are easy to defeat on their own, but their habit of attacking in large swarms can be quite overwhelming. When facing swarms of Shadows in Kingdom Hearts, the Thunder spell is an effective means of finishing off these foes quickly. The Keyblade is sufficient enough to take down a Shadow when it challenges Sora on its own, however.
Sora can block Shadows' scratch attacks with Guard, but he does not gain any Tech Points for doing so successfully.

Shadows tend to be the weakest of any enemy group, and if things prove too crowded can be defeated first. Their cards generally have a low value, making them easy to defeat, or to farm card breaks for Riku's Dark Mode.

Shadows function much the same as they do in Kingdom Hearts, and can easily be defeated with basic ground combos. Their attacks are slow and predictable with easily noticeable movements that give time to guard or dodge. They can be picked off to regain small amounts of HP while fighting other stronger enemies.

While Shadows are weak and pose little threat, they are best ignored as they are rarely required for the completion of a mission and drop no Heart Points. However, if they need to be fought then there should be little problem confronting them with a simple ground combo or two, or a cast of magic such as Thunder for dealing with groups. Watch for when they twitch, as that signals their attack where they will lunge forward with their claws.

Kingdom Hearts III
In Kingdom Hearts III, Shadows function much the same as their previous incarnations, however here they can be forced out of the ground with the usage of Water magic. They can be easily defeated within a single combo, making them useful for building up the situation gauge and recovering the HP they drop, especially in the Demon Tower fight where the cast-offs will drop extra HP when defeated.

In Kingdom Hearts III, Water Magic can be used to get the Shadows out of the ground.
A Shadow with a pink aura and especially high health is fought in Scala ad Caelum, and defeating it is necessary to advance. After portions of its health are depleted, it will teleport around the area to distract Sora with other enemies. Defeating this Shadow will grant Sora a fragment of Kairi's heart and move him onto the next area, regardless of how many other enemies remain.
