Shadows function much the same as they do in ''Kingdom Hearts'', and can easily be defeated with basic ground combos. Their attacks are slow and predictable with easily noticeable movements that give time to guard or dodge. They can be picked off to regain small amounts of HP while fighting other stronger enemies.

In ''[[Kingdom Hearts III]]'', Shadows function much the same as their previous incarnations, however here they can be forced out of the ground with the usage of [[Water]] magic. They can be easily defeated within a single combo, making them useful for building up the situation gauge and recovering the HP they drop, especially in the [[Demon Tower]] fight where the cast-offs will drop extra HP when defeated.


In ''[[Kingdom Hearts III]]'', Water Magic can be used to get the Shadows out of the ground.
A Shadow with a pink aura and especially high health is fought in [[Scala ad Caelum]], and defeating it is necessary to advance. After portions of its health are depleted, it will teleport around the area to distract Sora with other enemies. Defeating this Shadow will grant Sora a fragment of Kairi's heart and move him onto the next area, regardless of how many other enemies remain.
