:The difference being that Sora was using a (albeit incomplete) Keyblade of People's Heart, designed to unlock the heart. Sora became a heartless, released Kairi's heart, and Roxas was born as Sora's body faded to darkness. However, when Xehanort stabbed himself, he used his regular Keyblade, and all that did was free his heart from it's current vessel so he could take a new one before he died.
