The Land of Departure has physical qualities of several major worlds from the Kingdom Hearts series. The Land of Departure is shown in artwork to be set high in grassy mountains, surrounded by flowing water. The building itself decreases in width as it reaches the ground, tall spires protruding from the roof. Two lengths of golden chain connect the castle to twin peaks. Similarly to Twilight Town, there is one major building in this world's render; the main building also bears a resemblance to Twilight Town's clock tower. Like Radiant Garden, this world also has a circular area in the middle of it, with a large building overhead.
The Land of Departure's castle is set high up in grassy mountains, and is surrounded by flowing water down below. The building itself decreases in width as it reaches the ground, and has tall spires protruding from the roof. Four golden chains also connect the castle to two pairs of twin peaks, one pair in front of the castle, the other behind it. Down the castle's stairs is a circular area known as the , where the world's Moogle Shop can be found for a limited time throughout the story.

The game's tutorial, while still controlling Ventus, takes place in the . Going up into the hill leads to the . The area before the Mountain Trail is the , where the world's Moogle Shop can be found if the player chooses to return to the Land of Departure for a limited time in the story. Beyond is Terra's, Ventus's, Aqua's and Master Eraqus's home.
Leaving the Forecourt leads to the , a tranquil area that's got several bonsai trees as well as a few tiny waterfalls, and puddles covered in lily pads. There's also some benches there and a few contraption with golden pendants that can be hit. Going up into the hill leads to the , a place Terra, Aqua, and Ventus goes to relax or exercising.

The Land of Departure is also one of a select few worlds in the series that features areas that eventually cannot be accessed during later portions of the game. After Master Eraqus is killed and Master Xehanort plunges the world into darkness, the world cannot be fully revisited. The Forecourt is no longer accessible because the road leading to it has collapsed, and it is seen one last time towards the beginning of the Final Episode.

The Land of Departure is also one of few worlds in the series where certain areas become inaccessible later in the game. After Master Eraqus is killed and Master Xehanort plunges the world into darkness, the world cannot be fully revisited, as the Forecourt is no longer accessible due to a collapsed road leading to it.
